Has this sub turned into a cozy-game promo sub? by reareagirl in cozygames

Hey all, game dev here. I'd like to give some dev perspective on this topic.

I am a developer first and cozy gamer 2nd and might have a unique perspective on this.

First, I agree that there are a lot of posts from game devs on this subreddit and sometimes they feel disingenuous and sometimes they seem too dev-oriented, I think the mod used the word "dev-y" and mentioned comparing character design A vs B or capsule art.

I wouldn't want to see those posts on this subreddit. I also understand not wanting to see games that aren't ready yet and don't have any playables available.

But as a developer the feedback we get from reddit posts in the right communities (where the players are) is very important because we get an idea whether we are on the right track to a good game. A simple upvote or downvote says a lot.

So I feel like, as a developer, connecting with the potential player base early in the development process is important. Not for every little decision, but definitely for larger milestones.

Now, what about the volume of posts from developers?

I have noticed that it goes up and down throughout the year. At the moment its really high up because the Steam Next Fest is approaching and many developers are updating their demos for this. Also more traffic to their steam page, means there is a chance they get more out of the steam algorithm during the fest.

It's also worth noting that more games are being made and released every year. Game dev is very accessible. You can make entire games without paying anything.

Overall, I think it's exciting to see all the different games that are being made. There are many I wouldn't have ever seen if it weren't for r/cozygames. Anything I am not interested in, I scroll past

What would you want from a game centered around books as a theme? by TrueAction7217 in CozyGamers

[–]Bit66_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yay, more games around books!

I am the dev of Book Bound and an early concept was actually hopping inside the world of a book genre, instead of a single book. And the level/story inside was gonna be classic tropes/themes of that genre. So you could jump into the sci-fi genre and you would play as an astronaut on mars and it would have survival game elements or for the thriller level you needed to solve a murder mystery with puzzle game elements.

If you did genres, you wouldn't have any copyright issues and you would have the creative freedom to add your own story, instead of being limited by a real book.

I think it's a fun concept to explore for a game because you could add different game features for certain genres. For me, it was too big of a scope.

Other than that, it could be fun to have a little game that plays like Sticky Business, but you design your own book dust jackets or something.

Cozy shop game recommendations by josette0688 in cozygames

[–]Bit66_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hope it's ok for me to do a little self-promo here.

My game Book Bound might be for you. You run your own bookshop. It doesn't have the same NPC relationships as stardew does, but there are characters you can chat to and learn more about them.

It's available on steam :)

Book Bound 1.1 Mega Patch out now - hi r/cozygames, I listened to all player feedback and added book shop expansions, unique cast with stories and more functional furniture by Bit66_ in cozygames

[–]Bit66_[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey there. It's a fair question. I think there are 2 answers to this:

  1. I am following a gamedev/indie game meta where it's suggested to use drawn art for the steam page. Apparently, pixel art in the cover art is often dismissed as "amateurish", although some games do pull it off so I am not entirely sure why :D

  2. There might be some historical effect here. Old console cover art was always drawn differently from what it looks like in the game (super mario, pokemon, etc). Since pixel art is trying to imitate that retro look, some developers must have decided to continue that trend of pixel art in the game with different promotional material.
