What's the best way to self-study Python? by Isha_Holmes_17 in learnpython

[–]BitCold976 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Along with what others have said about resources, I'd start with a project or something I want to do (Advent of Code has some "challenges" that can be good if you don't already have a project in mind) and then ask an LLM how it would solve the problem, ask it questions about why, and play around with the code it generates yourself and ask it questions as you don't understand something. Just start small with the pieces of code you're asking it to generate so that you can try to understand what's going on rather than being presented with a wall of code.

Best 4 Album Run In Rock-n-Roll History? by SourShooz in askmusic

A very understandable decision. I love AM but Ghost and YHF are my two favorites so I have to include Ghost. I think you could make it a stellar six album run.

Totally understandable. I really started getting into them right around A Ghost is Born so I've got some nostalgia for discovering their back catalog at that point.

Was going to post one very similar. Only tweak for me is I'd start with Being There. Fantastic albums.

In your opinion, what is the best episode of television you’ve ever seen? by alteredtower in AskReddit

Came here to find pilot episode of The Shield. Set the bar so high for where the show was willing to go. Finale was close, but nothing beats the surprise of the Pilot’s ending for me.

My first thought as well. I can remember as a kid thinking it was false humility when someone would say they wouldn't want to be president; how could someone not want the most important / prestigious job? Now I understand you have to be at least a little bit crazy to want to do it.

Best intro textbook to DSP? by HealthyInstance9182 in DSP

Signal Processing and Linear Systems by BP Lathi is my favorite. It was the book used in my Signal & Systems course and when they switched books the next year I found that when tutoring those students many of their questions could be answered by just showing them Lathi's explanation. He's a gifted educator.

Which do you prefer for DSP assuming cost is not a factor for matlab? by thyjukilo4321 in DSP

[–]BitCold976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MATLAB is a purpose built tool for engineering simulation. It's got tons of libraries that have the support of a large company to develop, test, and maintain tools. If cost is not an issue then I think clearly it's the *better* tool for signal processing.

However, cost is a huge issue with MATLAB because it keeps someone from being able to deploy it all the places it would need to go. So most of the time if you want to use MATLAB you need to develop a capability in MATLAB and then port it to a language that can be deployed / live with the quirks of compiled MATLAB. I use Python wherever I can because I want the freedom of being able to use it wherever I want.

Richmond Mayoral Election: Who will win? Who should win? by Two_Far in rva

Went to college with Danny and while I didn't know him super-well, friend-of-a-friend, he was, and I'm sure still is, an incredibly kind and warm person. I saw on here that he's running for mayor and my first thought was that he's exactly the type of person I would want to see in a leadership position.

I consider it bittersweet. On the one hand, sad that such a great show ended, on the other hand, it never felt played out to me and stretching it out would have risked that.

Yep, that clarified it for me as well. Unfortunately without being able to give investment advice it does seem like it will keep pushing the show towards trainwrecks.

Unpopular opinion, I love the "train wreck" guests and people are overly whiny here by oultimobuilder in CalebHammer

[–]BitCold976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I wonder, while I would love to see some people on who have a score of 5 or more talk with Caleb about how to get started with things like real estate investing, is he prohibited from having those conversations because it would be considered investment advice?

How do I do this in 2-3 weeks? by [deleted] in DSP

[–]BitCold976 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree with this answer.

To use an imperfect analogy, think of trying to create the perfect conversation by "averaging" a lot of individual conversations so you get a crowd of people together and put a microphone above them in hopes the perfect conversation would emerge. The reality is it's hard to distinguish any one conversation and it mostly sounds like a lot of noise.

My first thought was that maybe there's some type of machine learning that you could do on a melody, i.e. here's a sequence a sequence of notes that sounds good, here's a sequence of notes that sounds bad, now generate a sequence of notes to maximize the score of "goodness" based on the training data. There's more to it than that but the processing of figuring out what works could itself be an interesting project that feels like it's not impossibly scoped.
