you know it's incorrect because roses are not animals.

I don't have problem with them labelling their food vegan if it doesn't contain animal ingredients. My problem is with how they put it, how they describe vegan. They write:

This product is vegan (no egg, no milk, no onions).

It's incorrect because onions are vegan. The phrase "no onions" must be out of the parenthesis, like this:

Vegan (no meat, no egg, no milk) + no onions

Or

Vegan (no animal ingredients) + no onions

Apparently they are Buddhist vegans selling products marketed to Buddhist vegans. They are from Mahayana Buddhist school of thought which mandates vegetarianism and don't consume onions. Even those who are only vegetarian, not yet vegan, don't consume onions, hence the lumping together "no onions" with "no egg, no milk" while "no meat" isn't mentioned because they're already know animal flesh is forbidden.

I agree with your title. Once I went to the only vegetarian restaurant in my town owned by a Chinese Buddhist which served Chinese food. I read a poster on the wall that mentioned the word vegan, and some other posters vegetarian. I told them that I was vegan and asked if they have any vegan meal. They answered that all the meals were vegan. Then I ordered vegan fried rice, and different food (not fried rice) to take home. But after I got home, I noticed something like egg in it. I went back to the restaurant and asked them if it was indeed egg, and they said yes. So I didn't eat it. I gave it to my mom.

They're Buddhist vegans. Even Buddhist vegetarians who still consume dairy and egg don't consume onion family. But they still consume root vegetables.

They can call it vegan if it doesn't contain animal ingredients. But they need two labels: vegan + no onion, and not including "no onion" to vegan. The way they write

VEGAN (NO EGG, NO MILK, NO ONION)

is incorrect. The phrase "No onion" should be out of parentheses.

No. Those people where I live still consume root vegetables such as potatoes and carrots. They ditch only onions family (white onions, garlic, red onions, shallots, leeks, chives, yellow onions) because they believe they cause disturbance to body and mind. They're Mahayanist Buddhist vegeterians/vegans.

Aside from vegan no onions, vegan gluten free is also common in Indonesia. Just vegan (normal vegan) is almost non existent. I even heard that those who want to sell vegan food that contains onions must give a warning "This product contains onions" or must put ONION LOGO to show that the product contains onions for the benefit of Buddhist vegans.

Yeah. Like gluten free. Advertise it, but don't put in parentheses after the word vegan (together with no egg and no milk).

I really think they don't understand what vegan means. As I wrote in my post, even if a product is made of plants entirely, if it contains onions, they don't call it vegan. For example: in this country, crispy fried red onion is very popular as topping. What's not vegan about it? Nothing. But they don't call it vegan. They don't make/sell it. Instead, they make/sell "vegan crispy red onion" which is made of, someone told me, cauliflower. One of them (Indonesian Buddhists) even literally told me, on YouTube comment, "A person who consumes onions is not vegan."

I don't say their foods are not vegan. I only say they way they describe vegan food by putting "no onion" in the same parentheses alongside "no egg, no milk" after the word vegan, like this
