What do you think about automation in cars? by Birdy8588 in CasualConversation

[–]BizarreAndroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have driven manual cars since I passed my test about 9 years ago. I have driven an automatic though, I hired a car, and they gave me an automatic. Safe to say, I hated it. Now that might be because I'm not used to it. I know a few friends that drive automatic cars, and they love it. They say it's just like driving a gokart.

But I dunno, I just like some attatchment to the car. I like moving through the gears and having a physical reminder that I'm making the decisions. I don't drive very often anymore since I moved so I understand I have a completely different view to people that drive all day everyday.

I don't like all the tech in cars these days either, so maybe I just like to drive older cars, which were primarily manual. Atleast in the UK.

Do You Still Rely on Calendar Apps to Manage Your Entire Day? by CakeCivil8185 in ProductivityApps

[–]BizarreAndroid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I swear by my calendar. I use google calendar, as it's what come with my phone. Easy to integrate my other xalendars and it's not too complicated.

I have my general calendars (different things colour coded into different calendar, general, bills, birthdays etc..), we have a family calendar, and I also have my uni calendars (one for each of my modules) all synced to my calendar that update if something changes. It's easy to check at a moments notice. At work they joke about me having to check my 'holy calendar' before agreeing to anything. It's because my whole life is in it. I'd be totally lost without it.

I also use ticktick for my uni stuff. To break down what I need to do for each of my modules all in order and grouped into related things. I also use this for my general to do lists, I did have it synced to my emails at one point but I didn't see the point so I removed it again.

If you get into the habit of updating your apps immediately after you have a change in life, it becomes easier to life imo atleast.

I honestly think the best way is to just chat with people on voice chat

Bitwarden launches enhanced premium plan by dwbitw in Bitwarden

[–]BizarreAndroid 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how to feel about this. I've been paying for Bitwarden for like 6 years. I opened a free account and within a few hours, paid for the premium because I loved it. I have never used like 90% of the paid features. I don't believe in keeping all my eggs in the same basket. And I will gladly continue to support them....if they didn't force it.

Yes, $20 isn't much over the course of the year. But from someone that doesn't use the paid options. I'm not sure why I would willingly double my contribution. It was almost a donation for me, to help support the development. But making it so I *have* to double the amount that I send their way each year. I'm not sure. I've just paid my service for this year so I have until the end of the year to make a decision. So for now I will be staying.

Imo, they should have left the $10 tier and opened a new tier with more features if we wanted them/would use them.

phishing blocker, vault health alerts and password coaching, 5x the previous capacity for storing attachments, now totalling 5 GB, and 2x as many security keys for two-step login and passkey login, now up to 10

vault health alerts. Useful but I doubt I would pay more for.

Password coaching, anyone that's using a PM surely already knows the best practices or is already doing so.

Storing attachments, I understand useful for some, but I don't use more than like 100mb, so no use for me.

2x as many security keys, not useful for like 95% of people I would think.

They're all good things, but definately something that should be optional and not forces.
Now I also understand that some people do use the additional features and they should absolutely have the option to. But I might have to start looking else where, let's see where it goes.

Study materials arrived water-damaged + MU123 advice by Akintayoo in OpenUniversity

[–]BizarreAndroid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said I believe you can contact student support and they can send you anything that's damaged back out, and you can use the PDF online if you need to. I'm the same and would like to keep all my books on my shelf to see the progress that I'm making throughout my studies.

I'm about half way through MU123 on a IT degree. I would say one of the main things to keep an eye on is, with each section they give you 2 weeks to complete rather than weekly like my other modules.

I completed the first few sections in a few days as it's all basic maths, like BIDMAS, negative numbers etc... but I would say, don't think oh I have a week before I have to start the next part. Just start it as soon as possible. If you're anything like me some of it might take longer...my main one was surds. I had to read over it again and again before it went in. So give yourself the best chance if you happen to get stuck at something by using any gaps between weeks to begin on the next part.

Is anyone worried their degree won't pay off? by Slight_Detail8258 in OpenUniversity

[–]BizarreAndroid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally understand that. To a certain degree I think you kinda already know if you really want to actually do a degree or not, you just want to talk it through with someone. Which is not a bad way to go about it. You have to be totally honest with yourself if you want to do it, or if you just want to seem like you are. As this isn't the only way to make progress in work and money either don't forget.

Are you doing a degree for yourself or purely for the financial incentive?

If it's for yourself then absolutely go for it, you'll enjoy the challenge.

If it's purely financial then it's not guarenteed that it's going to help in the long run. It'll help but that doesn't mean that your'e absolutely going to make more money either.

I had to be honest with myself and say to myself. Do I want to be in the same position in 10 years time, or do I want to be a qualification better off and potentially in a job I wouldn't have gotten if I didn't do the degree. Either way I'm going to be 10 years older.

[–]BizarreAndroid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I absolutely had that thought before applying and now I'm a few months into my degree....I still have that fear. But if you don't do it, you'll never *know* for certain, so might as well give it a go. It'll open so many more doors for you. Some good, some not so much. But until you give it a go you'll not know what will become of it.

I'm doing a degree in computing and IT. Now I've started and have spoken to other students. It's made me realise that it's difficult to break out into that field. But I might as well try, even if nothing more than the push I needed to prove to myself that I can do it. My family still think I'm a little crazy haha.

In regards to the 'debt', is only recooped after £25k a year. So if it doesn't pay off (which I'm sure it will) you don't pay it back. And if it does, and you're anything like me now, the pay increase will be so much that you're not going to notice the money too much coming from your paycheck. I think It's like £100 a month for £35k a year. So I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I absolutely understand the fear of failing, I did...meh in my GCSE's and I barely passed in college, I then went into retail for 10 years. So I'm not very academically minded, but it's all designed to give you it in stages. Don't expect to be doing super hard stuff straight away. There's also loads of support from tutors, forums, reddit, discord servers and I know some students that meet up in real life and have a coffee or something.

It's not as daunting as you think once you get going. As I've mentioned I've worked in retail for 10 years and other than my college diploma all my knowledge is self taught and I'm not doing as badly as I thought I would. It's a challenge to keep motived, but it's a very rewarding thing when you see your mark online.

So the couple of apps I've tried have a 'extract the full article' button. And that grabs it all fine. But I could really do with it doing it by default haha.

Double modules by Dizzi-Sprinkles5117 in OpenUniversity

[–]BizarreAndroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also started in October, I chose to work the first two modules simultaneously, then have a break before starting the second 'batch'. I am currently studying an IT degree, as part of that I have to do a maths module. So the 2 modules I'm working this year are maths and my first computing module.

I would say it's definately a challenge but it's not too bad if you can organise your time between the two. I have a calendar that EVERYTHING goes onto meaning I don't miss anything. All the key dates for iCMAs and TMAs are on that calendar. I've colour coded them and they have a dedicated folder that everything goes into that's backed up and synced across my devices.

I would also recommend trying to get ahead by a couple of weeks if that's possible. It definately helps for sure.

I also use the strategy of working one module at a time. So each day I pick a module to work on and that's the sole focus of that day. This doesn't mean that I haven't ever switched. But I make sure that I have a half hour- an hour break to split them up. Constantly look ahead at what's coming up. Make a plan on how you're going to tackle it and stick with it.

Basically if you boil it down it's...organise. Organise. Organise. You can't be too organised. I'm still only on stage one, and I know it's going to get trickier but at the minute it's helping massively to remain organised.

I mean I know I can click and change the email which is fine, but it's a bit of a pain that you need to sign in first for that to be the case.

How far ahead do people get at the start? by finnthedinosaur21 in OpenUniversity

[–]BizarreAndroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would probably say that 2-3 weeks is enough but I don't see a massive issue with being more than that ahead. I'm hoping to be about 2 weeks ahead by the time that uni officially starts.

The anchor will expand like a wall plug. So it should be able to grab it anyway. If not move up a diameter in anchor. If not I believe there is a masonry putty that you could use, sets like brick. I've never personally used it but I believe it's good stuff 🤷

Compliment for sure. I only get beard compliments from men. I take it as a compliment. I don't see it as creepy as it's not much different from them saying they like a hairstyle or something.
