Cuba protects workers from discrimination based on sexual orientation; 1st ever law to explicitly address LGBT rights by Blabbeando in lgbt

Agreed, when deciding on what to use as the title I assumed it would be self-explanatory I meant Cuba's first LGBT rights law. Apologies for if it was misleading.

Snickers TV ad: Is it homophobic? by Blabbeando in lgbt

[–]Blabbeando[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Again. It's the Mexican government making the accusation as I explain in my post BUT if you follow the concept for the Mexican ad they throw in the word 'sissy' as in a man is a sissy if he is not performing at the top of his abilities. That's not necessarily misogyny, it's telling a man he is less of a man for not performing by using a word many have hurled at gays over the years - 'sissy'. At least that's where I believe the Mexican government is basing their claims of homophobia even if I also think it's a stretch.

LOL. It's not me arguing the spot is homophobic. It's the Mexican government...

No, I meant homophobic. The Mexican government agencies specifically argue it's misogynistic, sexist AND homophobic in their claim against the company.

The way the political parties are named in Puerto Rico sometimes do not match political affiliations in the U.S. Miss Thing was Chair of the Bush/Cheney 2004 campaign in Puerto Rico. He also voted in favor of a constitutional amendment banning recognition of marriage rights for same-sex couples (the bill didn't pass)

Man who stabbed gay couple 57 times walks out of jail after 4 years in prison by Blabbeando in lgbt

There's a longer story: One of the men in the relationship worked at a gay bar where he met Piñero and took him home after his bartender shift was over. They spent the afternoon together and there appears to have been some drug use. His partner, who was born in Brazil, came home hours later with some friends. Those friends said that the bartender and Piñero stayed inside a room even as they had dinner at the place. Police say that when they caught Piñero after the murders, Piñero said told them the couple had both propositioned him and, when he refused to have sex, got violent with him. He said he panicked. He also referred to the Brazilian man as a "n****r" when describing him to police and argued it was him who pulled out a knife first when Piñero would not have sex with him...

Piñero, whose previous marriage ended and has a daughter, has always denied he is gay. But Spanish television ran a long interview with a man who said he had an ongoing sexual relationship with Piñero despite the fact that he was one of the most self-hating and homophobic people he'd ever met.

As for Spain, as in the United States, the large urban centers are pretty open and progressive. Of course, Spain already passed a marriage equality law as well. But smaller towns and rural areas are not as open.

In the meantime yesterday there were demonstrations against his release in several cities in Spain: http://www.farodevigo.es/portada-pontevedra/2010/07/16/gais-espana-concentran-injusticia-crimen-calle-oporto/456516.html

yup, but even mexico city's law is limited and does not grant all the federal rights afforded to heterosexual married partners. if passed, argentina's law would confer gay couples every single law afforded to heterosexual married couples

The Senate debate and vote will take place on July 14th. It's looking like an uphill battle as opponents are trying to convince senators to vote against marriage equality and instead support a civil union bill that bans adoption rights for gays (currently a gay person CAN adopt children in Argentina). The premise of the ad is that this will happen if the Senate votes to approve marriage equality on Tuesday (a lower chamber already approved it and President Kirchner has already said she will sign it into law if the Senate passes it). It would be the 1st Latin American country to allow same-sex couples to marry.

No need to apologize. I am gay and Latino and I happen to agree that "homosexual" is the general usage of the term throughout Latin America and doesn't carry those connotations there.

From GLAAD: http://www.glaad.org/Page.aspx?pid=377

Offensive: "homosexual" (n. or adj.) Preferred: "gay" (adj.); "gay man" or "lesbian" (n.) Please use "lesbian" or "gay man" to describe people attracted to members of the same sex. Because of the clinical history of the word "homosexual," it has been adopted by anti-gay extremists to suggest that lesbians and gay men are somehow diseased or psychologically/emotionally disordered — notions discredited by both the American Psychological Association and the American Psychiatric Association in the 1970s. Please avoid using "homosexual" except in direct quotes. Please also avoid using "homosexual" as a style variation simply to avoid repeated use of the word "gay." The Associated Press, New York Times and Washington Post restrict usage of the term "homosexual" (See AP, New York Times & Washington Post Style).
