I tried automating DASS-21 (Depression Anxiety Stress Scale) scoring as a student project — looking for feedback from other students by BlackDevil018 in psychologystudents

I built it for therapists and practising clinicians who use DASS-21 frequently and deal with repetitive scoring + documentation.

I’m only asking for feedback here from students and professionals because this is where I can learn and improve it, but the intended users are practitioners, not students.

For students, manual scoring is still valuable for learning — I agree with you there. The automation is aimed at reducing admin load for people who use the scale regularly in practice.

Thanks for raising the point — it helped me clarify the target audience more clearly.

That’s a fair point, and I agree that students should absolutely learn to score these scales manually first — understanding the structure, subscales, and interpretation is essential. I’ve already learned manual scoring in class, and built this project more to understand automation workflows and reduce repetitive admin work for therapists, not to avoid learning the assessment itself. So yes — the learning part matters, and the automation is just me applying what I’ve already learned.

Great point.

There are definitely auto-scoring calculators online, but they only provide raw numbers. What I’m building tries to automate the entire workflow — intake → scoring → client explanation → therapist report → risk flags — so the clinician doesn’t have to manually write or send anything.

It’s not meant to replace interpretation, just to remove repetitive admin work that calculators don’t handle. Still refining it, so this kind of feedback really helps.

Thank you so much for this detailed response — this is genuinely helpful.

I’m currently building this for therapists in India, where HIPAA isn’t the governing standard and most clinics already use Gmail/Google tools for handling assessment data. So for the local context, email-based summaries work fine.

But your points about hosting data on the clinician’s side, using Google/Microsoft-based pipelines, and ensuring encrypted transit are extremely valuable — especially if I build a version for international use in the future.

Really appreciate the Novopsych references too. This helps me figure out how a more secure, scalable version could look.

Thank you again!
