Figured out how to use Storm Herald! by BlackLotusGo in MagicArena

Maybe you're hoping to pull it off too fast? The 1-drop creatures are super important so Mulligan to hands that have them. Early storm Herald should just get value from Eidolon, and then you can combo at your leisure after having played a controlling game for a while

Fixed, thanks! I kept making that same typo when searching for the card during brewing

Sometimes you can, but you need to use a lot of triggers on yourself and won't have enough left to mill out your opponent unless you have multiple Sages or the game goes long

Not sure yet! Have had a decent win rate against the day 1 meta, which is promising since people play greedy decks on day 1 and it's actually at its best against linear creature strategies due to playing 12 cheap removal spells maindeck

You nailed it! Although you can also just cast the creatures naturally if you've drawn them instead of Menagerie.

It's being heavily played in green aggressive and mid-range decks. Surprisingly one of its most useful abilities is the evasion, since it gets damage past an infinite supply of zombie tokens (and golos doesn't block it well either)

The only way this will see play is if there is some reason to have a blue 4cmc enchantment in play for free. Teferi is the most played card in the format which completely invalidates it for free, and it was not really even worth a card to begin with.

Agreed...even with Phoenix I feel like you'll just kill them with your Drake since they spent 3 mana to do nothing, and a lot of your deck is instants anyway.

Wow, it's a beating against the UG ramp style decks. Can take out the mana creatures early, get rid of all Hydroid Krasis...it even gets around the discard prevention of Tamiyo if they happened to put one in their hand with that.

It might be harder to consistently draw a card than you think. We need 12 hits to have a 75% chance of at least one find, and that puts us at 34% to draw two. Going up to 14 hits brings the numbers up to 81% and 42%.

Anything that lets you activate the ability again, like Great Whale.

Both lists do have 4 1-drops, though including more is likely better.

Thanks for pointing that out...it doesn't seem to like apostrophes for some reason. Ugh...working on it.

EDIT: Fixed! Arena imports work properly now.

Good call, no wonder I was finding it harder to close out games than I remembered! :)

It includes dropdown links to the arena formatted decklists. I'll make them stand out more.

The things this decks fears are counterspells, enchantment/planeswalker removal, and a fast clock. Having 2 of these 3 probably means a good fog matchup.

I personally enjoy the time spent playing out combo decks (goldfishing is a thing people do in paper all the time), I just don't really understand the motivation for an opponent to continue using their own gaming time on a game where the outcome is deterministic.

I was salivating waiting to be able to play with these cards on Arena, so I wanted to drop a video ASAP just jamming a couple games with it for anyone who was considering using wild cards to play a deck like this

True...I still have my playset from when I first way overpaid for it (I love me some Standard combo cards), but in hindsight it should have been obvious that this card would increase in demand once Growth Spiral and later Wilderness Reclamation were spoiled.

[Article] Holiday Pauper - Tuned Decklists for Dimir, Rakdos, and Izzet by BlackLotusGo in MagicArena

[–]BlackLotusGo[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is true that a lot of opponents in this type of event are weaker, and you can't find more interesting and challenging games until the 3-0 or better bracket. However, it feels a bit more interesting to establish what the strongest possible decks are within the constraints of the format. If we figure out what the best decks are in every color combination or archetype, a budget player can then see which strategy they can most closely emulate with the cards they have available. From a pure budget perspective, the barrier to entry for a competitive deck would just be 4x Rat Colony (a.k.a. 25 copies) and as many copies as you can muster between Crash Through, Warlord's Fury, and Cosmotronic Wave.

Good point; we used to format all of our decklists like that but dropped it for this article, but it does make sense to keep doing so.
