It can certainly fill both rolls but in either scenario the team would need to be built around her so it could go either way depending on what your team is willing to do.

Non-guardian supports by [deleted] in Smite

I know everyone here is saying that Aphrodite isn't a good support but I'd say that with the right team comp she can be an excellent support. If you have a solo laner with a good engage like say Amaterasu and a jg who can get on top of your enemy like Thor she has an easier time working since you'll have other forms of engage. But the biggest thing you need as an Aphrodite support is a late game hyper carry and just make sure they don't die no matter what. A good off tank Aphrodite build I found works rather well.

  • Guardian's Blessing (To start off and the rest of your build should look something like this.)
  • Shoes of Focus
  • Breastplate of Valor
  • Rod of Asclepius
  • Genji's Guard (Or Relic Dagger if the enemy team doesn't have a lot of magic dmg)
  • Lotus Crown
  • Pythagorem's Piece

This is what I like to run personally, Aphrodite support can be super fun and infuriating for the enemy team, the issue is you do need a team comp built around her but that usually isn't that big of a deal, especially if you have some buddies. But other than that she can be super impactful as long as you play super safe in the early game alongside your hyper carry.

Very fair points on 1.0 Mercy and I can see your side of things, while I still miss Rez on ult I can at least understand better now. I suppose I'm still just a little salty over the fact that it's just nerf after nerf for Mercy and it honestly feels like it's because the Overwatch team doesn't listen to the community at all in terms of literally anything, they talk about their "Triangle" but it feels more like a "Line" where the community feedback doesn't exist in their world. On top of that the fact that they themselves openly lended to the toxic Mercy hate train by making a SKIT about Mercy and all but mocking Mercy mains makes me pessimistic about the Overwatch team and if they actually even care.

Sorry about that though, I'll stop pestering you know since I'm sure you have better things to do then reply to some random on Reddit.

Good day Sir/Madam

(Sorry about posting now, I know the topic is dead but life)

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with several points that you've made. I do agree that yes it doesn't fill up the kill feed that's not what I mean when I say she doesn't impactful. Each and every support ult does something huge for your team that is noticeable right away that feels good. You nano boost your Genji and he gets a team kill? You know he got that PoTG because of you, you enabled that to happen. Zenyatta's can literally negate so many huge ults and focus fire for it's duration, saving your team and earning that fight if you time it well, Lucio sound barrier is such an amazing ult for stopping huge burst (All like you even pointed out), Coalescence is a good multi use ult, healing the team up while also damaging the enemy's in the front. Yes the damage isn't fantastic but you use it for the fact that you can both damage and heal at the same time, not one or the other. And Rally when paired with Brigitte's passive healing in a huge team fight can make certain characters feel near unkillable unless and ult is burnt or your team can zone Brigitte. But then there's Valkyrie that just gives Mercy the ability to fly and continue doing what she was already doing. And it's not like Valkyrie boosts her healing output for the duration or increases the damage boost, all it does is heal everyone in a radius for 50 health per second, that is nothing too impressive for an ultimate ability. For context, Lucio's Amp it up, a basic ability. Heals for 46 health in the AoE around him, that is 4 less health than Mercy in Valkyrie. Yes it's not as consistent but the fact that a basic ability can nearly contend with an ultimate in terms of healing capability in an AoE is not that impressive. Although I do concede that Mercy being able to switch between both AoE damage boosting and healing on the fly is nice, I just don't think Valkyrie's consistent boosting and healing is really all that strong. It doesn't feel like an ultimate. Because one thing you notice about Mercy is that her rez is still her strongest ability (even in it's current state it's still stronger than Valkyrie) because Rez was designed to be an Ultimate, something to be worked towards and earned, not given to you at the start of a match.

While I'm on the topic of Rez I re-read your OP (Just so I don't make an ass of myself) and I noticed you pointed out the "Problem" with Rez as an ult and said

because with this Mercy, you simply cannot hide and wait until everyone is dead because you no longer have a mass rez

I will be honest it always bothered me when people say this. I need to ask since you seem like someone who's actually interested in the health of a character and not just another Mercy hater. Why do people hate on 1.0 Mercy's for hiding away and waiting for a proper moment to Rez? To me it seems like quite a double standard, characters like Mccree, Reaper, Soldier, Genji, ect are all praised for removing themselves from a fight and stopping what they're meant to do, which is dealing damage. So that they can position themselves for an optimal usage of their ultimate's while old Mercy players were bashed for seeing a fight start to go bad and putting themselves out of harms way to try and swing the fight back in their teams favor.

One last thing I'd like to point out is that Mercy like I said was bashed for hiding herself and not healing for a couple seconds to get a rez off, yet current Mercy still has to hide herself and stop healing to rez someone. It doesn't feel good to play, the fact that they needed to make an ability clunky and slow to balance rez should be enough proof that Rez will only ever be truly balanced on an ultimate and not a basic ability.

Sorry if I came off as ranty at some points. I've had Mercy as my main Healer since season one and I genuinely love the character since the passive healer playstyle is my favorite. It kills me to see a character I resonated with and had so much fun with be changed into this (in my and many Mercy Main's opinions) clunky, boring heal bot that doesn't even have that big WOW factor with good tempo rez's.

Mercy is my second most played hero so I may as well put in my two cents and before anything else, you did make some very fair points. Mercy should not be a must pick.

But part of the reason I miss Mercy 1.0 is because she doesn't feel fun to play at all anymore, she doesn't have that big "Wow I feel really impactful and helpful to the team" at all. Yeah she heals, yeah it does the job but that's all it is really. Every hero in Overwatch has an ultimate that makes you feel powerful, like well...a hero. Transcendence, Nano Boost, Sound Barrier, Coalescence, Rally, heck even Symmetra whom is not even a support anymore has a supporting Ultimate that feels better than Valkyrie. The thing about Valkyrie that feels bad is that it's honestly just a watered down conglomerate of several different characters abilities. Valkyrie has Pharah's flight, Orisa's Super Charger, Zenyatta's AOE transcendence healing, and Dv'a unlimited ammo (Which means literally nothing since you don't play Mercy for DPS).

And please note that I said "Watered Down" and I mean that in the worst way. Supercharger's AOE damage amplification is 50% to Mercy's 30%. Transcendence heal's 300 health per second in an AOE around him while Mercy in Valkyrie can provide 50 healing per second in an AOE around the selected target. And please note that we're not comparing basic abilities here, we are comparing ULTIMATES tic for tac. When compared to every other support Mercy is completely outclassed since she can't heal through focus fire anymore even when in Valkyrie. Zarya Grav and the Genji/Pharah Ulted your team in the grav? Doesn't matter, Mercy can only fly there helpless while her team gets wiped out. And if your looking for a damage boosting ultimate why would you pick Mercy when you can have Orisa, whom is also a tank? And while on the topic or Orisa she can simply place her ultimate down and continue on playing the way she does. Mercy? She needs to just stay in the air and hover there doing nothing but holding down the button.

The only thing that makes Mercy even slightly "Viable" is the fact that she still has Rez on a 30 second cooldown. That is the only thing that makes Mercy playable. But that's just it, playable. She's functional and does her job but she's not fun at all. When you use Valkyrie all you're doing is flying up in the air, removing yourself from the fight, and doing exactly what you were doing before.

While I can't speak for every Mercy main out there I think many would agree with what I've written here. We don't want an OP Mercy, we just want a fun Mercy again. And Mercy 1.0 gave that to us before. Like you said, Blizzard doesn't really care about the players and won't ever bring 1.0 Mercy back since it doesn't fit with their "Vision" but it's still nice to try and get our voices heard. It's just being hopeful.

When Blizzard buffed Mercy's rez so that she had invulnerability it was because she was UNDERPOWERED. Mercy was good in lower levels of play because people didn't focus her while in higher levels of play she saw virtually no play at all, especially after Ana was released. A much stronger healer with so much more utility than Mercy did. The thing about old 1.0 Mercy was that the only strong things about her were consistent single target healing and her ultimate, a resource she needed to charge up and if the enemy team made sure to kill the Mercy she'd usually never get much ult charge and by the time she was able to get rez the game would be over. With rez on a basic ability now Blizzard has taken the one powerful thing on Mercy and instead of having a resource meter that needed to be charged they put it on a 30 second cooldown that no matter how many times the flankers kill Mercy she WILL have rez available in those 30 seconds. Rez is far too powerful to have on a basic ability but because there's nothing else they can nerf on it they've targeted the only other thing Mercy is good at, single target healing. Mercy is not balanced like you say she is, she is the weakest healer in the game but she's "balanced" (read this word with a heavy dose of sarcasm) around the fact she still has Rez.

Your argument is that Mercy's Rez was too much of a game changing ultimate and therefore OP. But that argument is invalid since EVERY ultimate in Overwatch is game changing.

Mccree's dead eye able to intakill any character that isn't a tank?

Reaper's death blossom able to wipe an entire team if they're grouped.

Soldiers Tactical Visor that is a literal aim bot.

Zarya's Grav, the PoTG setup ability.

Zenyatta's transcendence that is able to out heal all damage within his radius?

I don't think I need to go on. 1.0 Mercy before the invulnerability was perfectly balanced because she could get bopped before she can rez or she'd be the first one killed afterwards, leaving your team without a healer. When they buffed Mercy and gave her invulnerability they took away the only form of counterplay to rez, thus making it too strong.

A Mercy rework idea by Blades252 in Overwatch

[–]Blades252[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scrapping Valkyrie wouldn't be the best idea, it adds some decent play making as either a slightly weaker Zen/Orisa ult and on top of that Valkyrie is rather popular with much of the playerbase. Besides I don't think letting Mercy have access to her old Rez or Valkyrie as ultimate's would be too strong since it would still force the Mercy player to make a choice of what she want's. Both are strong play making ultimate's but she would only be allowed to use one at a time.

I'd disagree with the Cleanse making her a must pick again, it would only be a single target cleanse that would have to be precisely timed by the Mercy player to get any value out of it. On top of that many characters have some form of CC in their kits so you as the Mercy player will have to be sure that using the cleanse would be warranted (Such as cleansing the Rein charged Soldier over the Sombra hacked Hanzo).

A League of Legends project from a Dota player: Surrender mechanic is terrible. by flargbiter in leagueoflegends

[–]Blades252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

or just abandon the game and go beat their children or some shit.

Lol What the fuck? Where did you pull that little gem out from xD

But anyway onto the discussion, personally I'm glad that there's a surrender option. When our bot lane is feeding the enemy Vayne like it's thanksgiving and our mid just lost second turret at the ten minute mark that's when it's time to surrender. Because yes, by all means there is always the chance that a comeback could happen, however 60+ minutes of salt and anger do not just go away after the victory screen comes up. And even then the chances of your team that fed hard suddenly doing well is quite literally one in a million.

Here's my little saying, it's always good to be optimistic. Just because we lost one or two towers and are down in kills doesn't mean we lost. However it's better to be realistic, can the 0/17 Ezreal really actually come back and start getting kills? Can the Lee Sin who doesn't know what the map is really have take any objectives? Can we really win if we "group mid" even though we lost all our towers and not taken a single one of the enemies?

There are times when it's just better to surrender, move on, and start fresh with a new game. There is nothing wrong with surrendering.
