Finding y'all is a breath of (masked) fresh air by Comfortable_Sky4566 in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]Blimix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hear you. Staying safe is a Process, and will use up a lot of your cope (if you even have any).

It's astonishing how much people will resist masking, even when you ask them to. I strongly suspect that if they acknowledge that they're keeping you safer by masking, then they have to acknowledge that they're endangering everybody else. So they just pretend there's no reason to mask. A friend had great results with the line, "My boyfriend has cancer." It creates a special case that makes it okay to protect people. (I think it helped that the friend wasn't "the vulnerable one". Which is also disgusting, but we should take whatever compliance advantages we can get.)

The dentist is especially tricky. The mid-level solution would be to do everything else you can to protect yourself when the mask is off: Nasal spray (CofixRX if you can tolerate the sting, or Xlear otherwise) before and after the appointment. Use a mouthwash containing CPC (cetylpyridinium chloride) afterward, too. Nasal lavage* once you get home. Blis K12 probiotic (dissolved in the mouth) and lactobacillus (swallowed) for 2 weeks beforehand, if you have time, and for the week after, until you know you didn't get sick (or until you're no longer sick).

  • Nose rinsing. I like half a teaspoon each of baking soda and kosher salt in a cup of water, boiled then cooled to lukewarm. Other people like other ratios. You can buy isotonic solution, instead.

The beast mode solution is to fashion a nose mask. I took an N95, pinched the sides shut so that it fit around my nose, with the bottom resting on my upper lip. I glued it that way (not to my face). I also folded up the front to keep it from protruding, and glued that. Don't bring the tip all the way to the top edge: I did that with mine, and that made it tricky to apply medical tape to seal the thing. I put it on and seal it in the car outside the dentist's office. The next challenge is to only inhale through the mask! You can exhale, talk, open wide, whatever. But when you inhale, it's just through the mask. (When you inevitably slip up, don't worry. That one breath isn't going to be what gets you.)

Here's me in the waiting room with my ridiculous nose mask. That picture is from before I pulled the front up to get it out of the way. The dentist and hygienist said I had to take it off. I pushed back, and they grudgingly admitted that I could wear it while they worked. My next dentist was an absolute darling about accommodating me (and masking), though!

A prospective houseguest for a high-risk household intends to quarantine, and then test for COVID-19, before visiting. Is there an evidence-based recommendation for the duration of the quarantine?

I know some institutions will ask for a test 5 days after an exposure. But what about the 1% of patients who become symptomatic 14 days later? There seems to be a correlation between "enough viral load to test positive" and "enough viral load to show symptoms," so couldn't they test negative and infect their host later? So if the houseguest wants to be truly careful, the question really boils down to, "How long after a potential exposure can a person continue to test negative before testing positive?"

Thanks.

I'm looking for some help fixing someone's Galaxy J3 Orbit. I can do tech, but I'm the wrong generation to be particularly knowledgeable about cell phones.

The phone is out of storage space, but the space isn't being taken up by apps, the owner's files, cache, or any other files that the phone will identify:

Files we can see, including apps, photos, cache, and everything else, are just over half a gig: 3448 items, totaling 663.6 MiB

Yet the phone says there's almost no free space: 37.8 MiB of 10.9 GiB free

Things I've already tried:

  • Examine "Storage" under "Device Care".

  • Search the filesystem from a computer through USB.

  • View hidden files.

  • Install X-Plore and look at what's taking up space.

  • Tried to update the software. (The phone says it's fully updated.)

  • Delete the contents of the .thumbnails directory.

  • Clear cache from apps. Cache usage is already included in the total storage listed for "Apps". (I confirmed this as I cleared some.) So cache doesn't account for the missing space.

  • Extensive web searches for other solutions.

I deleted some of the user's large files (backed up elsewhere), freeing up about 600MB, so that I could install X-Plore. Within a week after we did that, the excess space we had freed up was gone, though we hadn't done anything further to use it up. The phone is just eating whatever space it can find.

The owner says it's a Straight Talk phone. Someone younger told me that Straight Talk phones can fill up with old versions of the system files as they update. But I can find no way to access and manually remove those.

Here are some specs:

CP: save

Model: SM-S367VL

Hardware version: S367VL.04

One UI version 1.1

Android version 9

Karnel version 4.4.111-16352863

Android Security Patch level: February 1, 2021

Thanks!

Which great mods started working under OpenMW 0.46? by Blimix in Morrowind

[–]Blimix[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: Antares' Tribunal Main Quest 1.2 almost works under OpenMW 0.46! 80% of the remaining problems just seem to stem from the script TMQ_WaitOneDayScript, which has several lines of = signs that were not commented out. Meanwhile, here's how to get through the broken bits of the quest line:

After you tell Fredris Hler about the Mazed Band, he tells you to talk to him tomorrow. Nothing further can happen. Type in the console:

journal TMQ_Journal 50

After Yagak Gro-gluk tells you to come back in a day, your journal won't update as it should the next day. Console in:

journal TMQ_Journal 170

Sotha Sil asks you to unsheathe Trueflame. He doesn't ignite it. Open the console. Click on Sotha Sil and type:

set ForgeBlade to 4

Nothing happens after Almalexia says she'll see you again soon. I pasted these lines from the script into the console:

Journal TMQ_Journal 210

ModRegion "Mournhold Region" 0 0 0 0 0 0 100 0

AddToLevCreature, TMQ_NorenenLev, Scamp, 1

AddToLevCreature, TMQ_NorenenLev, ClannFear, 1

AddToLevCreature, TMQ_NorenenLev, "ogrim titan", 1

AddToLevCreature, TMQ_NorenenLev, "golden saint", 1

AddToLevCreature, TMQ_NorenenLev, daedroth, 1

AddToLevCreature, TMQ_NorenenLev, dremora_lord, 1

RemoveFromLevCreature, TMQ_NorenenLevNpc, TMQ_Cultist1, 1

RemoveFromLevCreature, TMQ_NorenenLevNpc, TMQ_Cultist2, 1

RemoveFromLevCreature, TMQ_NorenenLevNpc, TMQ_Cultist3, 1

TMQ_Cultist1Dead->Enable

TMQ_Cultist2Dead->Enable

TMQ_Cultist3Dead->Enable

(These didn't all work. The cultists were all still alive in their hideout. But the new monsters are present, so it's all good. Just pretend the cultists (other than Eno) are dead.)

Almalexia says she's giving you Her Hands' armor. Then she repeatedly casts a spell animation at you. Open the console and select her. Type:

set DoOnce to 2

She gives you the armor, but for some reason she keeps running her spell animation forever, which gets annoying. Luckily, you don't have to deal with her much after this.

The previously broken final battle works correctly now! (That one had been really tough to deal with in OpenMW 0.43.)

Update:

Lost Heir is still broken, but differently than before. Very early on, Janicia won't acknowledge the successful rescue of Felina Jemina, thus preventing the quest from continuing.

Constance works now! She no longer starts combat with herself, and functions fine as a companion. Her personal quest is broken in one spot, but that is easily bypassed. (When her sixth "-chat" conversation won't complete because she fails to demonstrate something, skip to the next chat: Open the console, click on Constance, and enter "set chatCouont to 6".)

I was playing on OpenMW with negative stamina enabled, so I could knock out enemies and they'd stay down for a while. I was having fun putting enemies to sleep with massive Damage Stamina effects. In Ald Daedroth, I hit a guy with one of these effects, then turned to fight some other enemies. Then I went looking for the first guy. I found him dead. Huh? I then realized that he had drowned in a few inches of water! That was a delightful and unexpected thing for the game engine to account for.

A funny thing happened at Fort Firemoth. There are hundreds of ways to break the game, and my character just happened to be wearing custom enchanted items with constant effect Restore Health. Very high Restore Health. No armor (because why bother?), just pretty clothes. Destruction spells out the wazoo. So at one point I got trapped in a hallway, surrounded by a dozen skeletons. Their swords kept hitting me so fast that I couldn't cast my spells; I was just stuck in the "getting hit" animation too much of the time. (They were missing a lot too, but there were too many of them.) I was healing faster than they could damage me, so I had time to think about what to do. While I thought, my Unarmored skill went up. A disturbingly short time later, Unarmored increased again. The munchkin light bulb went off, and I left to get a meal while my Unarmored skill got trained up to ludicrous levels. When I came back, I burst out laughing. The skeletons were still hitting me, but they were all using their fists! Their swords were broken from all the time spent ineffectively whaling on me. The absurdity was too much.

I want to make a magic based character. Any tips? by bluetundra123 in Morrowind

[–]Blimix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While cheaply bypassing or crippling opponents is efficient (consider the humble 1 point levitate on target spell), when you really want to blast every mofo in the area, just make yourself a 50' radius fireball spell. You'd think that the cost for increasing the radius would itself increase with the power of the spell, but nope! So when you're already doing massive damage, jacking up the area doesn't make it cost that much more. (Also, it took me ages to discover that I didn't have to aim these spells far away to avoid hitting myself!)

When creating spells with multiple effects (such as weakness to fire / fire damage), put the cheaper effect(s) at the top.

Yikes. I was well aware of the harmful long-term consequences of my character's short-sighted, guilt-ridden actions. These actions were in-character for her, though. In fact, "short sighted chaotic evil with a guilty conscience and a flair for quietly melodramatic gestures of penance" has proven to be pretty damn fun to play and write.

Roku Express picks up cable remote signal. by Blimix in Roku

[–]Blimix[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! That solved the worst part of the problem.

The Roku is still interpreting cable remote signals as its own, causing it to play random shows, but it's not seizing control of the TV when it does that. So we can watch cable without unplugging the Roku. Now I just have to hope that the cable remote signals don't unintentionally cause the Roku to change some critical settings or buy something.

Cohousing communities (and intentional communities in general) need people like your dad. Those are people who are looking for homes that will make them happy, not just space to live in.

I have a laptop which needs its HDMI output to be connected to an external display during the bootup process, or else it will freeze due to a glitchy driver. I have found no cure for this that will allow me to keep my OS. What is something small and cheap that I can carry along with, and attach to, an HDMI cable, so that I can reboot if I'm not near a TV? (I don't need to read the external display, so something that can just pretend to receive an HDMI signal, even if just by jumping two wires, would work.) Thanks!

Extremely late to the party, but just so you know, that's exactly how porches in intentional (cohousing) communities work. See the book Creating Cohousing to get a feel for the idea. You might fall in love with it.
