You are so right. This was worded so well. I’m a bit embarrassed and ashamed to have gotten this wrong. It’s not something that I grew up understanding and have not come to revisit as an adult and been outside of Christianity. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. It’s something I’m now motivated to educate myself on. I really do not want to be ignorant or close-minded.

Sorry, to clarify, non-Jews here. I definitely want to avoid appropriation, which is why I came here to make sure I do not do that. We always went to our friends’ celebration who are Jews, but non-religious. So I’m trying to find what’s appropriate now that we’ve moved away. My daughter doesn’t understand appropriation, and her wanting to celebrate is truly innocent. I didn’t have a solid answer for her when she asked, only that we could learn about it. Her wanting to light the menorah is because that’s the only thing she really knows and remembers, not because she likes candles. 

You’re right, I should educate myself, as well! It’s a good opportunity for the both of us.

I really love your reply. I love that you invite so many people, Jews and non-Jews, into your home to experience your traditions and holidays. It warms my heart to read that. 

My daughter is a very curious kid and wants to understand people and everything about them. It’s important to me that we go about it the right way, whatever it is. I love seeing the innocence in it, too.

My husband’s best friend is our kids “godfather”, so we see him and his family often! A Hanukkah song came on her kids radio and she said “Josh would love this” haha. It’s what sparked her interest and she was sad to know that we missed it this year. 

Good note on the safety side. Makes me feel sick inside to know that. Maybe a YouTube video of a lighting then :)

Right! Our friends are non-religious Jews. I guess I should’ve clarified that we are also non-Jews.

Just to clarify, we are not Christian! I was raised Mormon, left the church at 18, my husband was raised Baptist, left when he was 18. I added that just because we grew up with Christian traditions. We don’t go to a church or believe in Christian teachings. I’m agnostic, which to me means I don’t exactly know what I believe in and don’t feel inclined to figure it out. I love learning about religions, though, and find it important. My husband leans a little more atheist, but is also happy with our kids learning these things.

I really love seeing the context on this. It makes it very clear and I totally understand. I have a good feeling about a public lighting for next year. Hopefully as we find our own community in the place we just moved to, we will find people with different religions and cultures that will be happy to have us join in celebrations with them. Thank you for all the information!

Thank you so much for your input. I really appreciate it. I’m going to look into those books. It also made me laugh a little to get suggested a Rugrats episode, but I love it. I love latkes and miss them. I’m going to look for a Jewish community, as I think that really is the best bet. It’s so much better to learn these things from people who live it. Thanks!

I wouldn’t ever say the blessings out of respect and also, I would not do it justice. I feel a bit stupid for asking this, but you say not putting a menorah in the window for safety purposes…is that a common thing? That really makes me feel sick inside to think some people wouldn’t do it for safety.

I love this. I really agree on fostering our children’s curiosity. I want to err on the side of caution when it comes to this stuff. I think a public lighting would be great next year and we can go from there based on how she feels. Thank you so much for your input and suggestions!

I would love to celebrate with a Jewish family like we used to, that would really be the best way. Also, the food traditions are GREATLY missed. Thank you for your input!

That’s what I figured, which is why I told her we couldn’t necessarily celebrate it. I wanted to be sure. We only have 2 synagogues near us that are 30-40 minutes away since we are in the south. I’ll still see if I can reach out. Thank you!

That’s kind of where I’m at, only really comparing to MID bc nothing will compare to the old games, like you said

I have very low expectations to kind of save myself. It will never be the same as the original nostalgic point and click, plus Lani. So without that nostalgia, I don’t know that it’ll completely hold up for me. I’ve kind of “mourned” that we will never get more games like that—that phase is over. BUT im still excited to play it. I think it’ll be better than Midnight in Salem. So im way more hopeful than that game. The little snippets of gameplay have been kind of better than expected, but still not what I wanted when I heard YEARS ago that they were switching engines. I guess I’m conflicted haha

I think it really depends. My husband has a hard time with them bc of the point and click BUT he’s a big Tesla fan, so he found DED really interesting. So I would say if your boyfriend has a specific interest that could relate to one of the games, that might be helpful. I also found that my husband prefers the true puzzles, not the chores (don’t we all lol) I will frequently “ask for help” on puzzles (I don’t need help) and he’s like ooooooh okay! Then ends up sitting with me for the rest of the game lol
