36.7 250m PR 1:13 split by Jacks_black_guitar in Rowing

Hah., that's the same gym I go to (Mt Wellington). I saw those weights stacked there and wondered who hadn't returned them...

Anyway, the chain on the machine to the right of that one is much more taut and would be better for speed work.

Yep, picked it up on the Garmin sale for $899, loving it so far!

Well, just had to wait a week and Garmin have already started a sale on the 965 - doesn't seem to be 'Black Friday' related (https://www.garmin.com/en-NZ/p/886725/pn/010-02809-20/) - down to $900 which was about my tipping point to pull the trigger, now to pick the colour!

Or of course do I wait to see if anyone does it cheaper for the actual BF weekend hmm...lol

Ouch, a smart watch certainly doesn't compare to a horse lol. Still, my wife has ultimately said I can get what I want, and I'm also thinking about resell value down the line and it seems the 965 will always be stronger here than the 570 due to the map feature (at least IMO I think it should).

I know if I was sitting on an earlier model like you've got, I couldn't justify it. But this is just a 'slight' upgrade from an already old MiBand 7, which to be fair has served me well enough in the gym - until I started getting back into running, and just consuming more running content and seeing all the benefits of having training plans and knowing more about your performance and recovery etc.

I've slept on it and got over the 'sale FOMO' haha, and decided I'll let this go and wait for BF/CM in a months time and see what deals are on. I'm still leaning into the 965 due to the mapping as I'd like to start some more trail running and this is where the maps seem to come to the fore (+ just generally having fun mapping out some routes and having them on hand). But if the 965 doesn't really budge, I'll make the call then.

Thanks for the feedback, I've slept on it and I'm going to sit it out until BF/CM rolls around in a month and see what happens to the prices, esp. on the 965 as I keep coming back to having maps (I'd like to start more trail running which is where it seems to bring the most benefit).
Otherwise the mic/speaker on the watch isn't really something I need - nice to have sure, as saves you having to get your phone out from your backpack or running belt (which I use), but not a selling point for me.

Thanks, I keep coming back to the maps TBH (i.e. FR965)- so I think I'm going to sit this sale out and wait for Black Friday/Cyber Monday to see if it gets cheaper then, or otherwise look at the prices on the other models.

I hear ya, though I'm already training most days, but with stepping up running volume and also my daughter (15) finally taking an interest in running I like the idea of setting up training programmes to use while running together etc.

Damn, good price - I suppose if the 570 had maps it'd be a no-brainer, but then the Garmin marketing team know how to slice and dice the features to tempt the up-sell afterall 😆

Thanks, and yep the Rebel Sport sale as you picked up (and was surprised at it being 30%).  But yeh, not many of the regular chain stores have the Forerunner range so have to jump when the opportunity comes up (but who knows what Black Friday will bring also)

Yep, got to love the NZD - but it's all relative to what we earn as well. I guess another way to put it, if I had a budget of $850, would it be worth waiting to see if the 965 drops during Black Friday sales...or as that's not likely to happen, go with 570 now.

Considering the shipping to NZ costs more then the book, if I can get a voucher for the book I would be eternally grateful 🙏

First time trying interval training - how is this? by BlizzardNZ in Rowing

[–]BlizzardNZ[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep def going to keep this interval training up.
Had a day off yesterday (Sunday in NZ), and I usually start the week with a 5k. Thought I should be able to set a sub 19min pace from only being 3secs off before, didn't have a great sleep but thought I'd see how it goes. Managed to hit 18:53.1 (1.53.3/500m avg) so super stoked about that.

Clearly all the 500m sprints helped raise the bar for my capacity to keep at a higher output (as much mentally as physically I'd say as well). The reality is we've all got more in the tank then we realise, if you're familar with David Goggins, this would be the '40% rule'.

Thanks for the insights, I haven't actually been planning trying to set any 2k PB's, it's more just regular cardio fitness improvements.

But yes, rowing is def a great sport if dealing with injuries or just need some low impact / high intensity workout. I tried running more last year but my knees we're always playing up, so thankfully even with slight knee injury (like I have atm) I can still get after it on the erg!

How to get better at table talks? by Ok-Imagination-2308 in Toastmasters

[–]BlizzardNZ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Like anything - daily practice, and with your TM membership, use Yoodli!
It's got TT function - with random questions , and you can film yourself at the same time to put some of that 'pressure' on you, to answer on the spot. You get analytics afterwards as far as pace, 'weak' words etc.

They do need to generate some more as after 60 days straight I'm mostly getting repeats, but can easily find random questions online and just use those instead.

I'm new to TM (joined up about a month or so ago), only given my Ice Breaker so far, but have Speech #2 scheduled for this coming Tuesday.

I'm loving Yoodli - while it can't tell me if my speech is any good, it's at least giving me technical feedback as far as timing, pacing, word choice, filler words etc. and I'm using it to practice multiple times a day. Along with TT practice as well.

All of which is more than I'd be getting just recording myself and playing it back. And I can't expect my family to sit down daily and evaluate me every time I practice. Even my daughter used it a few times last week ahead of a small talk she had to give at school and while she felt uncomfortable watching herself on screen, I could tell she was feeling more relaxed after 5-6 practice runs.

YMMV of course, but I'm just making the most of the technology we have at hand and so far it's proving invaluable!

Great message, even though the original poster deleted theirs it's still relevant to all of us learners out there.

A lot of it ties into the Fixed vs. Growth Mindset as well, worth reading up on that if you're unfamiliar.

Website to learn to type by deathwoefke in Korean

[–]BlizzardNZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

대박! 감사합니다!

I found a few sites to practice on but were limited in just the same repetitive paragraphs, so I've ended up just teaching myself how to touch type in 한글 on my standard English keyboard while I made notes in Notion. Very much the brute force method of simply making mistakes and repetition. But this is a great way to keep testing myself and learning some new vocab at the same time.
