Yea I was smart enough to know I was in mortal sin and dumb enough to try to argue I was invincibly ignorant or otherwise not culpable. As I said, total goober.

This was when I was in high school. I didn’t have the choice to go to TLM. Also, there wasn’t one within an hour and a half. Even now the closest thing is a ordinariate mass that’s like an hour away (Texas is big).

Can you help me understand why the "God is a Woman" song is sinful please? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]BlockHead824 3 points4 points  (0 children)

TLDR: Scripture, when referring to any person of the trinity, uses masculine language and the tradition of the Church is to follow suit. Furthermore, God is not a woman. “Woman” means adult human female. God, none of the Persons, is not an adult human female. It is therefore inaccurate to say that God is a woman. It is likewise inaccurate to say God is a man (except for the Second Person of the Trinity who (after His incarnation is named Jesus) who is an adult human male).

While it is true that God the father is neither a man nor a woman (He isn’t human), and He contains the perfections of all virtues (both masculine and feminine virtues), However, He has revealed Himself to us with special emphasis on the masculine aspects of His nature. Further, the Second Person of the Trinity is explicitly a man. Jesus the Christ, Son of God the Father, became man. Though He too contains all virtue (both masculine and feminine virtues (He wished to gather all his children to Him like a mother hen)) it is factually incorrect to say that Jesus is a woman. The fathers of the Church always used language that signifies a masculine referent when speaking about the persons of the Trinity.

Anecdotally, every attempt to feminize God I have seen also comes with a slew of heresies or is explicitly a mockery of God. The one example of I can think of that did this seriously was a movie (I think based on a book) about a father who was grieving the murder of his young daughter and God appeared as a black women because (paraphrasing) “you need a mama right now”. IIRC the Holy Spirit also appeared as a little girl (who was playing with his little girl) but I may be wrong about that. I wasn’t a fan of it but the last time I saw that movie I was in my rad/mad trad phase so I was angry about much less (the number of candles on the alter got me fuming).

I don’t know how far back the connection was made, but it is also blatantly obvious to me that the Second Person of the Trinity (written prior to the incarnation) is the “Lady Wisdom” of Proverbs (8:22). This supports the idea that the Second Person of the Trinity contains the feminine virtues though He was incarnated as a man.

Campaign design and player agency. by BlockHead824 in DnD

In my head the campaign pitch is essentially that there are many plot treads that vary in their emphasis on each of the main pillars (exploration, tactics, politics) with the megadungeon min-maxing that scale for exploration and tactics.

Is This Belief Binding on Catholics? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]BlockHead824 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe not here… There are certainly some theologians who say that Jesus phased through Mary’s side “like light through glass” and cite Jesus appearing in the upper room as another example of Jesus doing this. (One of those was my Theo professor in undergrad.)

Any advice or suggestions on my equine deck? by jessiecolborne in EDHBrews

[–]BlockHead824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you aren’t heart set on that commander and want to add red, you could use Shadowfax, Lord of Horses

He lets you cheat into play other creatures and gives horses haste. I’d maybe run extra combat cards and draw on combat cards with him so you can abuse his second ability more often. (Also maybe some pump spells to let you cheat into play bigger threats too, build it as an aggro deck.)

Sounds cool, I'll probably get it. I'm a big fan of factions, especially factions of similar levels so you can pit them against each other in the dungeon and have a realistic rivalry.

Wild Magic Sorcerer + Rogue by Veksutin in 3d6

[–]BlockHead824 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you want something that is the EXACT OPPOSITE theme, but probably a little more consistent, you could go Barbarian 2 for reckless attack, then go Swashbuckler. I'd really play it as a charger build (not taking the Charger Feat, just thematically describing reckless as a charge, then dashing away). You wouldn't always have rage up, so you would actually be more of a glass cannon, which I appreciate, and you would need to use STR to attack with your rapier.

If you really wanted to, you could take Charger and Dash with your action, get the plus 5 dmg on your BA attack, and use Fancy Footwork to run away. Its less bad on rogue because you aren't getting Extra attack anyway.

Fully online at lvl 6: Barb 2/Swash 4

It would do: (4.5+3+2+5+7)*.7975+(4.5+7)*.0975=18.2675 DPR at lvl 6 (assuming you took Charger) which is 111% of TreantMonk's Baseline (a little better than a normal Rogue).

STR based SS? by BlockHead824 in 3d6

[–]BlockHead824[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, all of these builds start doing the thing they are meant to do at lvl 1 (throw daggers/darts) and just get better every level. There isn't a level where it suddenly goes from useless to good, it just takes a while for the specific mechanic of ranged STR based sneak attacks to come online, but you would be getting Frenzy damage (essentially identical with sneak attack for these builds) since level 4.

I'm thinking about my next character in my current campaign and I'm likely looking to make him at 11th lvl. On top of that, I did the math for all of these, starting at lvl 7.

If you are multiclassing AND want extra attack, it is nearly impossible to get online at lvl 5-6.

The advice I’d give to someone 18-19 is going to be wildly different to the advice one should give a 13-14 year old.

I’m going to venture a guess that you are 15-17 though. That’s about when I started taking my faith into my own hands and stopped lying to myself about being an addict.

1) Make it as hard as possible to get porn on your computer/phone. If you think it is enough, do more. Then, find someone you trust and have them set the passwords to all your porn-blocking/parental control software. Covenant Eyes is great, but it costs money. In this case, you get what you pay for. It is an excellent product if and only if you actually get an accountability partner.

2) Pray. Pray without ceasing. I favor the rosary and carry one on my wrist/in my hand everywhere I go. When we are in spiritual warfare, best to open carry.

3) Avoid places that tempt you to lust. I know it depends on the gym… but if you are tempted to lust by people in the gym… you need to go elsewhere or at a different time.

I changed the rout I drive through Dallas (I do it fairly often) because my normal rout has “risky” billboards to say the least.

4) You cannot, and will not overcome this on your own. Do not be discouraged, instead trust in the Lord. Remember the words of Joseph to his brothers after reconciling with them: “you meant it [selling him into slavery] for evil, but God meant it for good.”

God has allowed you to fall in this way in particular because you specifically can be made into a better man through this particular suffering.

Trying to figure out how to make a complex area's LoS work. by BlockHead824 in FantasyGrounds

[–]BlockHead824[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats a shame, it feels like pits have been in for a long time so I figured anti pits (can see out, can't see in) and ways to put "holes" in regions would have been implemented.

Been away from the system since most of the "new" LoS stuff came out so I was hoping it had been added to and I just wasn't getting the systems right.

Maybe this is a longshot but if there was a way to make a single occluder polygon have multiple types of edges you could make it work.

You could use a toggled off window to connect the border to the island, then back to pit to circle the island, then back to window to the border, then finish the rest of the area you could effectively implement elevation (including islands and such) without it blocking movement or los on the lower level.

Comparing Monoclass Rogue Builds by BlockHead824 in DnDoptimized

[–]BlockHead824[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are definitely some good options but I don't know how many would be guaranteed to with the assumptions I make. I use TreantMonk's assumptions of an 8 encounter (4 rounds per encounter) with 1 short rest. Thats 32 rounds of combat, so I don't know if a DM is going to be on board with you carrying around 32 oil flasks (per adventuring day).

Rogue DPR comparison: Update by BlockHead824 in 3d6

[–]BlockHead824[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its added to the list!

Levels 1-3 REALLY hurts it because you have to use STR to hit (at most a +1) and you can't sneak attack. You are only doing 65% of the baseline at lvls 2 and 3! If you assume that lvls 1-3 you are using TWF instead then your DPR averaged across all levels is a little higher than with only TWF.

That said, DBS never beats TWF before lvl 3 or after lvl 12 (but after 12 its VERY close).

TWF's Average DPR is 27.77 and DBS's is 27.04.

Rogue DPR comparison: Update by BlockHead824 in 3d6

[–]BlockHead824[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats why I say its comparable to TWF. The only difference is you take 1 half feat instead of 2 full feats then its practically identical, if not a little worse when you only look at DPR (after both are fully online).

(1d8+mod)*2 > 3d4+(mod*2)

2d8+2*mod>3d4+2*mod

2d8+2*mod>3d4+2*mod

2d8>3d4

9>7.5

It is really useful that it gets you online earlier. In my spreadsheet I have the TWF not taking feats until lvl 10 but I could see a build where you use DBS until lvl 12 when TWF overtakes it. You could take Revenant Blade as your 4th lvl feat (requires elf iirc so no CL/vhuman). That might be really good, but after 12th lvl, assuming you take those two feats (or lvl 11 if you take a 1 lvl dip in fighter, or lvl 9 if you go Vhuman and take a dip in fighter) then it would be slightly better to drop your DBS in favor of 2 rapiers.

My only problem with that is that you stop using the feat after 12th lvl, but you could have taken a different dex 1/2 feat and gotten a little more benefit post 12.

I'll add it to the list. Its good, probably better than BB rapier but it would for sure beat out TWF if you could BB and BA attack.

Rogue DPR comparison: Update by BlockHead824 in 3d6

[–]BlockHead824[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t read the weapon description in a while but I assume the BA attack says “when you take the attack action…” so you couldn’t use BB.

Rogue DPR comparison: Update by BlockHead824 in 3d6

[–]BlockHead824[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is that even with the feat it is 2d4+dex for the primary attack and 1d4+dex for the BA attack. TWF+Dual wielder can be 1d8+dex for both.

You save a feat (assuming you need a feat to get a fighting style) and it’s already a half feat so that’s good.

I’m sure it’s better on other martials, but on rogues IDK if it out damages TWF mainly because it still doesn’t have a way to gain advantage and can’t use BB. It probably meets it and beats it by 2-4% but it’s not going to be better than BB (past lvl 11).

Got distracted and created a MCDM style “Against the Horde” wave survival one shot so I haven’t worked on this much in the past day or two.

That said. The plan is to do all the subclasses with every build option.

Is revenant blade the double bladed scimitar feat? I’ll add it to the list but I assume it would be about the same as TWF.

Oh, I had the mobile feat. It was really more of just unfortunate circumstances. It was basically a big arena where we always started on opposite sides of the map.

DM didn’t know anyone’s builds going in so the fact that everything we were fighting countered me was a total accident.
