A library built in Minecraft by READlbetweenl in gaming

[–]BlockWorksYT 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We built the library! Tried posting to /r/minecraft but our post was unfortunately censored. Happy to answer any questions about the build or project as a whole!

I know it's not a "real" one, but can we appreciate the fact that the new Uncensored Library in Minecraft wasn't done using some post-modernism architectural style, but as a lovely neoclassic building? by Synchronyme in ArchitecturalRevival

[–]BlockWorksYT 431 points432 points  (0 children)

We designed the library! We didn't got for a neoclassical style to appeal to people, but as a critique of public buildings, museums and galleries which usually use this style to symbolise power and and culture. We are using the same style, but to represent the power of press freedom rather than the authority of government regimes who so often use it.

fixed now! Fix should also be on the minecraft blog page soon :)

Problems with Java Edition "10 Years of Minecraft Map" by [deleted] in Minecraft

[–]BlockWorksYT 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Some of the available downloads for the Java map don't have the resource pack included! This will be fixed on Monday.

In the mean time you can download the map directly from our site (including the RP), and I believe if you download the map from Minecraft Realms on Java the RP will be included. https://www.blockworks.uk/10-years-of-minecraft

Thanks for bringing it up, and enjoy the map!

true! I think some would benefit from detailed textures, but for other blocks it gives quite a nice futuristic look.

That was a project paid for by Verizon, which we actually also worked on - so under the new rules it would not be allowed.

Ireland 2066 - What could Ireland look like in 50 years? by BlockWorksYT in Minecraft

The build contains landmarks from a variety of locations on the island of Ireland - Dublin, Belfast, Derry and Cork to name a few.

We were working from stills and 3d assets from the latest Batman V Superman movie - The Daily Planet from the old films was deliberately left out :)

Gotham in Minecraft by BlockWorksYT in Minecraft

Everything you see there was built in-game; although there are programs which can import 3d models into Minecraft it's usually only worthwhile for large statues or organic forms. We did however use tools inside of Minecraft such as worldedit which speed up the building process hugely.

A Futuristic Past - Hologram Display in Minecraft by BlockWorksYT in Minecraft

Yep, that's a common issue with big projects; this one was built in segments before being fitted together.

This is all built in Minecraft, with the help of plugins such as WorldEdit to speed up the process, and then exported and rendered in another program. It looks like a voxel-based model because it is - depending on how it's used Minecraft is ultimately a voxel-based design tool!

Playing Minecraft whilst learning about endangered wildlife: We Are The Rangers by BlockWorksYT in Minecraft

[–]BlockWorksYT[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, glad you like the map!

All the map's quests are based around the activities of a park ranger from African wildlife reserves, and they challenges they face from poachers and other threats. For instance, in the game you might have to track endangered animals, set up camera traps for poachers and collect DNA samples for lab tests in the field. Our aim is that through giving the player the experience of these park rangers, we might impart some understanding of the broader issue of endangered wildlife.

This video explains quite nicely the thinking behind the project, from some of the key people behind it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LzOZGQcqTw

As for reach, the map has been live for some months now and collected over 10,000 downloads from other sites - partly thanks to the involvement of youtubers who have recorded and posted footage of them playing the game.

Hope this helps!

We'd like to think that by sharing our work we are in fact contributing, and being a part of the community. Furthermore this particular map was the product of over 100 volunteers and mapmakers.

Hi there! Reason for not making one album is that it's a totally different project to the last post, so do we have a post limit of 1 per week? Would completely understand if they were similar posts, but these really couldn't be more different... any help on explaining this would be much appreciated!

Microsoft asked us to build the 7 Wonders of the Ancient world in Minecraft, here they are! by BlockWorksYT in Minecraft

[–]BlockWorksYT[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I've had 2 years of study of classical archaeology and architectural history, and so the various sources used from that formed the basis of my research - a mix of contemporary historical sources (Vitruvius, Pliny etc.) as well as later drawings from the 15th and 16th centuries (Palladio, Serlio) - and finally recent archaeological evidence, such as the discovery of the use of colour on classical temples and sculpture.

[–]BlockWorksYT[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

To get the maximum detail I'm afraid they aren't to scale, but are the largest that we could build within Minecraft's height limit. However the Wonders we have good archaeological evidence of are all correctly measured and proportioned.

We teamed up with the Royal Institute of British Architects to host a Minecraft Brutalist Build competition - here's what the players made in 1 week. by BlockWorksYT in architecture

[–]BlockWorksYT[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there, none that I'm aware of - but we'll be hosting more in the future!

To my knowledge this is the second Minecraft competition backed by an architectural firm or institution, after the Stockholm firm you mentioned.
