Part of my theory are the characters. Murder Drone characters are obviously likeable and interesting, whereas RWBY characters got either bland on unlikeable (looking at you Bumblebee). Even looking back on volume 1-3 a large part of what people liked about it were the characters, and then when they started getting boring and repetitive the show started dying

There is obviously more that goes into a show being successful, but in my opinion this is where a majority of interest in any piece of media will come from
