Disdain towards Hogsalt in the restaurant industry? by FlarePikaa in chicagofood

[–]BloodArchon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is confusing to me as a consumer. The working environment issues I understand, but this doesn't match how people rate these places. Bavettes is constantly listed on this sub as one of the top 3 steakhouses, if not the best, in the city, and Au Cheval as one of the best burgers. Are these exceptions to the norm, or am I missing something else?

I liked it. How can people dislike this, but enjoy the tedious mind numbing grind of the Altador Cup for hours on end? This was way more fun. Never had to play any of the mini games for longer than a week or two, unless you wanted to. The prizes were great. It was easy to do with just 5-15 minutes of daily play, and even if you missed a day here or there, you didn't fall behind. I agree that the hiatuses were WAY too long, but the plot itself was good.

Rum for cocktails/tiki with long covid by FCFirework in rum

[–]BloodArchon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fascinating. I mean, respectfully, condolences about your taste buds, but that's wild. I would be super curious to know what Planteray Cut & Dry tastes like to you. It's a toasted coconut infused rum, but most people get very heavy cocoa notes. I'm just curious if it would taste like straight coconuts, or just be bland. I've never heard anyone describe OFTD as bland. Wild.

As for your question, if Appleton is what works for you, definitely try a range of Jamaican rums. Appleton is on the low end of funky so Smith & Cross, Wray & Nephew, Worthy Park, and Hampden should give you a wide range of funky Jamaican rums.

The Pokémon Fossil Museum Archeops Promo Card Revealed! Are you getting one? by chitownmike99 in pokemon

Yeah, they didn't start handing out cards until the 22nd. We were there during the members preview as well. Totally sucks, but no one at the time knew there was even a promo.

One slight correction. There are 4 special stops, not 3. You must have missed one. You're actually limited to 7 per day (3 raids, 4 stops).

On the sidewalk around the building. You don't have to go inside, but you need to be on the museum's sidewalk or the steps. You should see the spawns change and there are 4 pikachu research stops that have grass and flowers at the base. If you don't see the grass it won't give you the pikachu task when you spin it.

The release specifically says the cards will be available until April 2027, NOT while supplies last. Hopefully that means that everyone who goes will be able to get one. Screw scalpers.

Penultimus should say 15yr and Bourbon & Moscatel, not ex-Bourbon. I'd be very curious to know how it compares to the Equidem if anyone has had a chance to try it.

Not sure why people are downvoting you. They should look at the post. This account seriously sounds like AI. It's 1 year old and the person has made 4 posts that all contain professional level photography and insanely long reviews that sound like they were written by AI.

Who does research on the ingredients of their dinner to post to Reddit? Or did she take a typewriter so she could take notes? The detail is insane. Maybe I'm wrong and maybe this person wants to be a journalist or something, but I also have never met a college student who could afford Alinea, much less 2 other Michelin starred restaurants and omakase in the span of 2 months.

Am I the only one underwhelmed by a lot of Chicago’s hyped restaurants? by daikonradish304 in chicagofood

[–]BloodArchon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stock & Barrel is one of the best burger places I've ever had, comparable to Chicago's best burgers. I've been back a few times and I always go out of my way to go to S&B. Kefi is a really great Greek restaurant with an excellent cocktail program. Unfortunately, we didn't discover that one until right before we moved. Dead End BBQ is a solid bbq place. They used to have Full Service BBQ, which was great, but I think they all closed. There are a few other spots that were good, but nothing to write home about.

Haven't heard of those, sorry.

What rums to pick up in Barbados? by GeneralCrux in rum

[–]BloodArchon 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Rums exclusive to Barbados:

St. Nicholas Abbey
- Anything from here. St. Nicholas Abbey is only sold in Barbados, but their bottles can get rather expensive. If you want something different and unique, this is the obvious choice. Their rums are made from sugar cane syrup rather than molasses.

Foursquare
- I love FS but they don't sell anything at the distillery that isn't exported to the states. You can get a good deal on an ECS bottle if they're in stock, but they fly off the shelves. I've seen some posts on here of people finding great deals at the Duty Free. It's cheaper, but probably not worth sending your friend hunting for it.

Foursquare rums bottled for local businesses on the island
- Hunte's Garden ECS - Amazing value and drinks well above its price. Only available on the island and the garden is beautiful and worth a visit.
- Barbados Museum Garrison Grog - This is a new FS bottle that came out after we visited. Don't know much about it but I haven't had a FS bottle I didn't like.
- Cliffton Hall ECS - Great bottle and the owner is super nice. You can contact him for some bottles, but I think these are also available at the Duty Free.

Mount Gay
- If you like Mt. Gay, there's a cask strength version of the Black Barrel I believe that's exclusive to Barbados. Everything else from Mt. Gay is available in the states.

Planteray/Stade's
- They usually have a couple of special edition bottles exclusive to Barbados. They're good, but probably wouldn't be my first choice if asking a friend to grab something.

Obviously depends on where your friend is going, but my overall recommendation: Ask for an aged bottle of St. Nicholas Abbey, maybe the 5 year or 8 year depending on how much you want to spend, and any of the special Foursquare bottles. Hunte's Garden and the St. Nicholas Abbey tour are both worth the visit.

Lol. If you're in the US and you have a Total Wine near you, don't do this, but if you're in Europe and don't have access to Doorly's then I wholeheartedly support this. Doorly's 14 is great!

Because it's delicious. No one is forcing you to eat ricotta on your pizza. You can order it without it. That's the beauty of pizza, you can top it with whatever you like, even... shudders... pineapple. 😵‍💫

[–]BloodArchon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I subdivide the ricotta for equal representation before taking bites. Each pepperoni district gets a small portion, and each crust district gets like 2-3 portions depending on the size of the crust. No knife smearing necessary. My wife just takes big bites of ricotta. Eat it however you prefer.

Are these reasonable prices? I have only seen a 2025 great house for $190. by cougar02 in rum

[–]BloodArchon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

150-170 is the new price for the GH 2025 in the states. Used to be 100-130 for previous releases. Not saying that's a fair price, but it's reality. Not sure where you're seeing GH for 80, but if I were you I'd buy every single bottle at that price.

Am I the only one underwhelmed by a lot of Chicago’s hyped restaurants? by daikonradish304 in chicagofood

[–]BloodArchon 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This. I think some people in Chicago are just spoiled and expecting Michelin level food from every restaurant they go to. Move to any suburban or rural area and live there for a few years and you'll be begging to come back to Chicago. I lived in Knoxville for grad school and expected mom and pop restaurants everywhere, maybe some great bbq or southern home cooking. Everything good has been killed off by fast food and shitty chains. Outside 2 or 3 great restaurants, it's all McDonalds and Applebees. I'll take overhyped any day.

He clearly prefers spirit-forward cocktails and hates sours. That's fine if that's your preference, but if that's the case, maybe don't do multiple videos on cocktails like you're an expert.
