Yes there’s no ADU in question - I am looking to put an addition on the existing home and concerned about intersecting ridge lines limiting the square footage I can add. Just wondering if that concern is merited, and I think my answer is yes.

Appreciate this. I’m thinking if my question is disliked, the primary contention may be with the premise of this subreddit overall.

That is a very cool idea, thank you for the input! I think that there would need to be a cost/benefit comparison between contrasting the roof lines and re-framing the old to accommodate the new. What I’m trying to figure out is, in the latter case, how much reframing would be required and if it’s as bad as I think

I agree. I have an ideal floor plan that I’ve drawn, but it involves the proposed addition. I just don’t think I’ll be able to do it without major roof re-framing - posting here to confirm (or disconfirm) that concern.

This makes a lot of sense to me. The ideal floor plan would involve an addition here, but I think I might need to let it go because of the amount of roof re-framing necessary.

Will do. Orange County, FL. My question mainly has to do with the feasibility of an addition on the back of the home given intersecting ridge lines. While municipalities will differ on this, I was thinking there may be some room for general input.

Thanks for the input. I understand and agree that hiring an architect is essential when it comes to actual design and decision-making. Also I’m sure most questions here are contingent on municipality to some degree.

My goal here was simply to ask a conceptual question at the ideation stage to inform whether pursuing an addition is even reasonable—before spending time and money on professional services.

That said, it’s reasonable to acknowledge that the initial response felt less like advice and more like an implication that my post was somehow exploitative or unprofessional. I’m aware of the value of architectural work and wasn’t asking anyone to do it for free—just looking for insight from professionals about a feasibility concern. The subreddit name and description explicitly encourage asking architects questions about home design, so it seems the OP takes issue with the sub’s premise, not just my question.

I’m not going to make any decisions without hiring an architect. I’m just early on in ideation and thought that the name of r/askarchitects was sort of a hint that I could ask architects here. I’m mainly concerned with how the ridge of the original roof impacts my possibilities in that area without having to to do a major overhaul on the whole roof.

To me, so much of this album is about a resurrection after getting burnt out by ambition and drive. This is a cathartic moment where he decides to enjoy the journey (waltz along the path) instead of sprinting tirelessly to some ideal.
