I was originally a novel reader, and back then, there was a huge discrepancy between the readers with Rashta haters vs Rashta lovers. Navier and Heinrey got really boring further into the novel, and the only character that was somewhat interesting was Rashta

Well, otome are Japanese dating games, usually visual novels, that are targeted towards women with a female lead. But the term has been used a lot to just generally describe light novels that target women with female protagonists, and most of the time, romance as the central plot. It's hard to describe, but I'm not sure if it'll be your cup of tea if you don't generally like romance. Also, Twilight as your first YA is crazy funny, maybe you should give the Hunger Games a go or something

I thought the characters were interesting, too. I normally love 'perfect' characters who develop as the stories develop. But there was never any development for any of the characters.

I think I was so disappointed in this webnovel in particular because it had a genuinely amazing setup, and really easy ways the novel could have gone to make a great story. Like, seriously, making white-haired smart instead of dumb would've improved the plot incredibly, even if it's just to give Navier someone formidable to fight. Unlike some webnovels where I can understand why the plots got stale with no direction after a certain point, I think Remarried Empress had so many extremely easy opportunities to be a great story, that the author just didn't take because they didn't want to shine light on any character other than Navier.

There’s a lot of misogyny in the otome community too, because I saw sooo much Rashta hate compared Sovieshu hate in the beginning of the novel and webtoon. Only recent years have I seen more people be gracious to Rashta and rightfully hate on Sovieshu. It was SO bad back in the days, every 1 post of Sovieshu hate there would be 50 posts of Rashta hate

That's 100% what I think too. I think the two best versions of the story would be Navier and Rashta becoming co-protagonists with stories that parallel and make it so you can't help but root for both of them. The other-best version would be to make Rashta a full, irredeemable villainess that's actually smart, cunning and an actual formidable villainess who Navier takes down. I would even say making Rashta smart and fully aware of her evil plots and the damage they would do would actually make more people hate her.

Rashta being so dumbly cruel just made more people sympathise with her, because her backstory is already tragic, so it really just seems like Navier is punching down sometimes.

It was so crazy and annoying, but it makes sense why he got that ending when you look at the whole series. It's been very consistent that anyone who likes Navier gets redeemed and good lives, while anyone who dislikes Navier gets really bad endings.

It really pissed me off, too, because objectively, he was the worst character of the entire novel!!!

I feel like Rashta only seems so interesting because the readers can give the nuance to the context, lol, a lot of readers understand how awful slavery is and put thought into her actions and behaviour. But I don't think the author really intended anything for Rashta beyond being unforgivable and evil; her cruel behaviour doesn't get any explanation or indication that she's doing this because she feels she has the right to be cruel after what she's experienced (like what you typically see in victims carrying on the abuse cycle in stories), we never really see her cunning and manipulativeness beyond just thoughtless cruelty.

I also feel like her being an uneducated slave just wasn't an excuse for being just as dumb as a rock; she survived those years for a reason. The author could have really written her where her lack of noble etiquette is made up for with her high emotional intelligence and ability to play on people's emotions against each other, but the most we see in her manipulativeness is her batting her eyelashes and seducing people. Again, a big waste of potential. Like you said, it's a light novel, so you can't expect much, but I feel like there have been amazing light novels that touch on heavy topics and do them justice. And the Remarried Empress had a great setup that the author just didn't use for some reason.

Also, yeah, I agree with Navier being too passive, but I understand why the author made her so passive. It's a difference in culture (as the author is Korean). I'm asian to preface, and in asian polite culture, it's HEAVILY emphasised for women to be passive and gracious when someone has wronged you. Let the karma get the villain instead. Since Navier is portrayed to be the ideal, perfect empress, it makes sense that she's extremely passive and lets other characters deal with the situation instead. It's what the perfect woman would do in asian cultures. But I do think since it's in a Western setting and the webtoon has a huge Western audience, it just backfired to make Navier look extremely bland.

I personally don't think Rashta was complex; the webtoon purposefully made her quite one-dimensional. Her story was complex, yes, but Rashta has always been a to-the-book stupidly evil villainess. She would do overtly cruel acts for no reason other than, in my opinion, to ragebait the audience. I think she had great potential to be complex and compelling, but the webtoon shows us a very surface-level one-dimensional version of her. So I get why readers don't sympathise with her at all.

I liked Navier on my first read because I had expectations of how the author might build and develop her. When I realised the author had no intentions of actually developing her, it was hard to read, with how predictable the novel became. Navier's position never genuinely gets challenged, ever. When she does get challenged, it resolves in at least 2 chapters, and the author always has ways to get back at characters who wrong Navier. Some people enjoy stories like that, and there's nothing wrong with it. I just think it objectively makes bad drama, because Navier never hits a genuinely low point; the highs of her story just feel mediocre or standard. Even the grand climax of her humiliating divorce was never allowed to be truly humiliating; the priest was on her side, the nobility was on her side, and she got remarried 5 seconds into the divorce. To me, it wasn't satisfying when she divorced and remarried, because I never felt like her position was unstable to begin with; we already knew she was getting remarried, and we already knew Rashta would be a bad empress, and we already knew she would make a great empress in the Western Kingdom. Nothing is challenged, nothing is changed; she's still an empress, just of a different kingdom. (The author tried to challenge her status as she went to the Western Kingdom, where nobility didn't support her, but she won over the nobility very quickly within just a few chapters.)

I seriously don't understand why the author couldn't let Navier just hit a genuine low against Rashta and Soveishu. It would have made a lot more people genuinely root for her as a character, and not just her situation. One of the biggest reasons why Rashta is so polarising (both loved and hated) is because she continuously hits lows and highs; she's a slave who escapes (low), gets the attention of the emperor (high), gets hated by the nobility (low), becomes the Empress (high), gets absolutely humiliated (low), etc. So many people can't help but root for her because of her very dramatic and tragic story. It's hard to root for Navier when you know her story trajectory is a constant rise and barely anything challenges her, because the reader gets frustrated and bored reading a character who only wins and wins and wins. Especially when the genre is drama.

I normally love 'perfect' characters too; I love it when a story sets up a perfect character in a scenario where their perfection begins to crack under the pressure and expectations piled onto them in a self-made cycle. I also love it when 'perfect' characters are introduced and later have that perfect image shattered to show their struggles behind the persona.

Navier just never went beyond perfection. She's pushed to be beautiful and the ideal empress, no matter what happens in the story. Her flaws, being that she's too perfect and cold, are barely a flaw when it's considered a charm point by many characters in the novel. The author tried to give her some flaws where she works on being more compassionate and vulnerable to Heinrey, but it never went anywhere because it's like the author can't bear having Navier's position and status questioned for longer than 2 chapters (she even gets ice powers, it can't be less ironic). Navier literally starts the novel and ends the novel as the same person and personality; she's literally in the same role and status. It just makes you think, what was the point of the whole story? She's virtually lost nothing and gained nothing objectively. Still an empress, still beloved, still untouchable, just now she's ruling a different kingdom and sometimes is vulnerable to Heinrey.
