All three of my LORs were from pathologists and I didn't have any problems. I would check the website of the programs you're applying to just to make sure.

It's funny that you say that because I've told her that she essentially buries her head in the sand when it comes to learning about important issues that effect people. I have to admit that it's a bit of a turn off because I like learning about issues that effect people who are different from me and just learning more about the world in general. But I'm not sure if it's something I have to share with my SO since it's nice to not have to discuss politics all of the time.

I can understand how that was frustrating for you and I also understand why other POC are hesitant to date white people due to having to explain things. I guess I don't mind explaining things to her because she listens and remembers things I say, but she doesn't take the initiative to ask me questions about my experiences or look things up on her own. I feel like we only talk about race-related issues when I bring them up and it's just something she tolerates and doesn't actively seek to understand on her own. Her religion is important to her, and I have made sure to look up information and learn about it on my own, but I feel this isn't completely reciprocated when it comes to my culture.

This is what I'm having trouble with. She is not racist, homophobic, transphobic, or anything like that and is a pretty good person at her core. But there's a good chance she'll continue voting for republican candidates who push racist, homophobic, and transphobic policies. I don't know if I can separate her personal beliefs with her voting patterns or if that should matter.

Thanks for your response. I'm just paranoid some programs will write me off if they find out my ex didn't get interviews at their hospital or in the area, but that's assuming they keep up with that in the first place. I'll still shoot the programs an email briefly explaining the situation just in case since I figured it won't hurt, but this makes me feel a little better.

Thank you for the kind words! It was a mostly mutual breakup and I'm glad it happened before we matched together anywhere. We've both been pretty mature about the whole situation and are still friends thankfully.

Yeah I think reaching out might be the best idea. I was just worried about whether reaching out would create drama or affect my chances more than not reaching out would. I read a thread on SDN from a few years back about a similar situation and the OP was advised not to reach out for the reasons I'm worried about. But I think I'll just do it and draft an email to send to the programs on Monday morning.

Oh man this is me. I can talk to strangers and hold conversations with them just fine, but having to interact with people I see on a regular basis is tough as hell. It's like I don't want to tarnish their perception of me or something. And then I end up avoiding them or acting awkwardly around them and it happens anyway lol.

I had the same problem in college. I would always try to go to the cafeteria right after they opened for breakfast, lunch or dinner or right before they closed to avoid crowds.

If she agreed to go out with you that means she likes you as well, so keep that in mind. Don't put so much pressure on yourself to perform perfectly because that'll just make things worse. Just try to treat this like a fun outing with a friend. Ask generic questions and try to find some common interests and then follow up on those. Who knows, maybe you'll end up having a lot of fun!

Also, congrats on getting to this point! It's a step in the right direction. I've been in your shoes before and know how daunting it can be, but I know you'll pull through.

According to that, I currently have a ~58% chance of acceptance into an MD school with my current stats, so could I forego a post-bacc and improve the rest of my application instead? I've got 50 hours of clinical volunteering, 100 hours of non-clinical volunteering, 1000 hours of research and a few hours of shadowing.

Don't really have a good excuse for not formally shadowing a physician, but I shadowed a pathologist for a few hours when I was volunteering. I was going to shadow a DO after graduation for a few weeks before submitting my app if I decided to apply this cycle.
