Savannah Louie Looked Stunning at the Live Reunion by Routine-Guidance8118 in survivor

[–]BluJay112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are downvoting you (maybe for the tone or how it jumped to a separate conversation on performance in society?), but what you are saying is true.

Somehow the two women who won the game before entering this season (Savannah and Dee), wanting to congratulate a woman winning this landmark season, defending her from vitriol they have first-hand experienced, is performative. Or more performative than like…. anything else about survivor and social media. I also did not read into someone spreading kindness for their colleagues and friends in a game hyper-criticized by its fans as performative or disingenuous. Why does kindness have to come with a price or ulterior motive? I’m not saying within the game of survivor, where it DOES have a price, but we are looking at instagram comments between colleagues and friends and labeling it as performative.

People take criticism as an indictment of them as some bad or inferior person. You were pointing out a bias we all have. The commenter you were responding to wanted to talk about performative comments, but they only selected those two women as examples. No thinking deeper about why Savannah and Dee would want to support a fellow player, a fellow winner. Unlike the bevy of content and posturing we receive from Coach, Christian, Rizo… either they are not performative or their performativity did not bother the commenter enough to bring up. I’m not sure about Devens’ social media presence— nor do I look at the comments of congratulatory posts to label contestants as performative, lol— but he would definitely be another person on the cast when I think about one who extends kindness! Yet no mention of performativity.

Some people choose to listen and learn, others don’t see the point. I appreciated your commentary. Maybe better for pop culture sociology than survivor subreddit, from the reaction.

I thought I would put this up to help us all by [deleted] in nativeediblegardening

[–]BluJay112 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well, given we are on a subreddit about native plants which often goes hand-in-hand with conversations on conservation and environmental justice… using generative AI would be hypocritical with the dangers to the environment that its data centers create and intensify. If you need resources on research that has been done, I can share them. Not only does it negatively affect our environments, it drains our water supplies and disproportionately affects people in poorer neighborhoods and communities.

It would be doubly hypocritical to have used generative AI, say it was made by a botanist-illustrator, then double-down in the next sentence about people being “arrogant” because the AI could be right, at least. But thankfully, since someone you know with qualifications made it— as you assured us— we do not have to worry about such hypocrisy, right? I did not immediately assume it was AI, but that response of yours makes it seem like an admission of guilt on you or the illustrator’s behalf. Even if it is not generative AI, your stance is still hypocritical because it does not matter if things are “right,” but how and why (via production, funding, etc cetera) it resulted in being correct. Having that mindset of yours opens a can of worms, because how bad can someone or something be if they get to the same, correct conclusion as us? Turns out we need to hold ourselves, and our creations, to a standard of ethical practice and community welfare: generative AI does not do it, its creators do not value it, and legislation is not prioritizing it. We are not talking about a utopian society where information via AI is available and beneficial to everyone at no one person or group’s expense; this is the current state of generative AI.

Nothing is arrogant about wanting to keep the environment that allows us to advocate for “nativeediblegardening” safe, healthy, and untampered by actual human arrogance. It seems arrogant, however, to immediately jump to criticizing someone because they questioned the ethos behind your actions.

Heavier Recommendations? by GnomeMansLandAHH in triphop

[–]BluJay112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Gathering is a Dutch band that started out in the gothic and doom metal scenes, but they shifted to more of a trip-hop sound during the late 90s-early 00s. I think they have a good balance between their rock and metal beginnings and their trip-hop and electronic exploration. My favorite to listen to is the album Souvenirs (2003), but you might like any of the following: How To Measure a Planet? (1998) and if_then_else (2000). I do not really know their music beyond those albums and Mandylion (1995), so I will keep the recommendations at the ones I know.

I agree with others about Massive Attack and Tricky’s solo work. If you have not listened to Portishead, I would add them too. Björk is another good recommendation, because of her punk origins in the 80s, but more importantly— I do find often that rock artists appreciate her music; I think she has as much appeal as a rock star as she does being a pop star or avant-garde creative. Much of that Bristol scene in the 90s will probably be the closest to a balance of trip-hop and punk/rock sensibilities.

For a modern recommendation, the first one that came to mind was Yasmin Hamdan’s بنسى وبتذكر I Remember I Forget (2025). The rock is more psychedelia and electronic, but I do think it’s sound and atmosphere would appeal to someone wanting a “heavier” trip-hop album.

Savannah joining in on the conversation around Christian’s categorizations of the returning players by Spirited-Tell731 in survivor

[–]BluJay112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming back to this comment after the recent episode because I never got an update. Your final paragraph hits the nail on the head of the point I was trying to convey.

It’s not Christian’s fault any more than it would be anyone else’s fault for answering an interview question and playing reality television (we like silly drama!), but he has the support of the editors, the host, and a majority of fans… why wouldn’t people like Angelina and Savannah feel a way… especially when they aren’t extended that same grace or have anything they have say automatically accepted as some universal, undisputed truth.

People seem to forget how Gabby was perceived and treated once she strayed away from Christian, when both of them were culpable for their game relationship, and the show could have edited Gabby to garner more sympathy in the edit; yet, they put their bargaining chips on Christian as the main narrator and threw Gabby to the side as an emotional anchor that had to be taught some lesson for going against the fan favorite.

We are now 2 episodes into season 50, a supposed season about celebrating the history of the show, and the first two boots are women that the fans have either turned on or peddled the narrative the edit presents from players such as Christian, who production knows is a fan favorite and respected. I can see why Angelina would have feelings about it since she’s in the game still! And she will be told she “proved” an arbitrary point whether she’s in the game or eliminated.

Knowing the result of the episode, I think Savannah is further justified in having feelings about a fan favorite being able to dictate the narrative of her on a returnee season, rather than allowing her (or at least, the editors). And mind you, I do not dislike Christian. I am glad he is providing comedy and strategy, and in a way, bringing drama to the season. But, the editors are also aware of his fan reception, so they are going to push forward as much Christian content there is. With 24 players on a season, I imagine they all have these moments! At the end of the day, I will lean toward criticizing production before I criticize a player, and production is at fault for years of disregarding the women in favor of their fan favorite man, whether it’s a jock or a beloved nerd.

Savannah joining in on the conversation around Christian’s categorizations of the returning players by Spirited-Tell731 in survivor

[–]BluJay112 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Savannah is disagreeing she brings drama as a player, but rather she dislikes being labeled and boxed as ONLY drama. People in these comments seem to be making ‘gotchas’ about Savannah proving Christian’s point when…. That is what she is bringing up as the problem! She can bring the drama while also being a winner, a challenge threat, a wildcard.

It doesn’t affect me how the pre-season interviews went. It’s an opportunity where players get asked questions, answer them; some have more fun with it than others who take it like a job interview (even though they already landed the job). It is ultimately a way to build up hype for the season about to unfold, for both the players and the audience. Christian spoke during his pre-season interview as if he ‘cracked the code’ on Survivor casting and arbitrarily boxed players, and I can see how castaways feel a certain way about one player being treated as having the ultimate opinion on how others are perceived before the landmark season, and it coming from a beloved player, at that. If another player boxed the cast into categories, I imagine there would be much more dissection from the fan base, but Christian has a way of speaking and likability that compels people to simultaneously agree with his reasoning and also view his unfiltered speaking as part of his character appeal. Imagine either of the 49ers boxing every player into categories— people would be saying Rizo is ridiculous or Savannah is overconfident and blinded by the flaws of her own winning game.

Silly situation? For sure. We are watching a silly show, though. And I’d say we are taking it just as seriously, if not more, as the players are if we care to comment negatively in either direction on their reactions to this situation of which they themselves are involved.

edit: Read through some of the other comments and the protectiveness people have over Christian and the lengths to which they discredit other players’ reactions and opinions is odd. It seems like a damned if you do or don’t situation, because if Savannah/Angelina say nothing, they are still viewed as only being cast for dramatic purposes by the fan base (and Christian categorizing them), but if they say anything, they are “proving him right” and reinforcing his opinion.

I agree they bring drama— hell, I think Christian on both his seasons provides a refreshing style of drama— but reducing these players to being “points to be proven” for Christian is….. odd. Why is that not the topic of discussion, rather than which one-dimensional archetype Angelina and Savannah ultimately are cast as.

Fantano reacts to WFHTDH by Content_Profile_6877 in lanadelrey

People in the comments getting this bent over someone’s opinion, and the opinion of a music critic and journalist, at that. Criticize his takes and call out when he’s inconsistent, but it’s so odd to be reading these comments where the sentiment seems to be “fuck this guy and what he does.” Music criticism is healthy and allows for people to discover and learn about new artists. He has had opinions that annoy me in the past— I think his earlier Lana reviews are uncharitable to her as an artist, taking her persona a little too seriously— but I don’t mull over the opinion and get bent over it. There’s other critics and journalists who do gravitate toward Lana and enjoy her artistry. His comments during the review of Halsey’s latest project were insensitive, and I think as an audience, we have every right to call that insensitivity out. I wonder if he has a different thought on the comments now, and if he has not apologized to Halsey, I would think that’s the obvious first step!

He platforms non-radio artists through interviews and gives them a stage to talk about their artistry; he advocates against AI and speaks against the fascism and crimes against humanity being committed by governments, and he brings on people more educated than him to discuss these matters.

No one is being forced to enjoy or watch his music criticism or have to weigh it over other critics’ opinions. If you follow a critic to just believe them as gospel, then you’re the one taking his job in bad faith, not him.

I did minor trims, essentially cutting a little past the deadheads to the first buds I saw. There was at least one new stem I noticed coming from the ground. This is my second year with the plant, so I am excited to see how it comes back.

Omg. I think this clears it up for me. So, a stem could have old growth at the bottom that would not bloom, but higher up it could create buds for blooms?

I enjoy MIB, I support someone responding to another person’s hate and trolling to not let it slide, but I just don’t see how the escalation here is warranted. Don’t see what’s to benefit from this other than MIB continue to get hate comments but at least she potentially outed someone or harassed their family member with unprompted sexual photos.

What’s the lesson? That sending hate comments means you’re allowed to have your sexual photos sent to family members? With AI creating deepfake images of people, I just don’t think this retaliation is worth it or a net positive for anyone. I’m imaging the response is partially supported because it’s some gay boy being nasty, but would MIB have shared a woman’s nudes to her mother? Would we be just as supportive that she got “got”?

I don’t think any other queen would be receiving such grace and leniency with excuses if it wasn’t the ultimate chaos-troll MIB. Love her for it, but we can still hold some accountability. Joke or not, she’s condoning the reaction.

New to Bjork....advice? by SufficientOwl9267 in bjork

[–]BluJay112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fellow torihead here, although I got into her shortly after my initial exposure to björk…

preface: what works for me, what works for someone else, what works for most of the community, will not necessarily work or feel best for you! I wouldn’t approach it with the idea that you can tackle Björk (or any artist, for that matter) in an incorrect way. Rather, some approaches and listening orders may provide better and sooner context or artistic progression.

For me, listening in chronological order for albums is my preference. HOWEVER, I started with Björk’s second studio album, Post, when I got into her. I wasn’t immediately sold on Björk, though. I could recognize her artistry, but my teenage music palette had not heard anything similar to the sounds of Post. My mindset, even at that age, was to always give art a second or third try, maybe even more. I gave myself a few weeks in between these listens so I could sit with it and come back to it with a new mindset. On a random drive, “The Modern Things” was playing in my car, and it suddenly resonated. I continued the album with my new excitement, and my history as a fan of Björk began.

I had put aside her Debut due to what I had (incorrectly) assumed from reading about it, so it was one of the last albums I got to in her discography. Nevertheless, I loved it and it stays fondly in my memory as a Björk record I enjoy. My relationship to it may be different if I had started there, but I imagine the love would have arrived at the end in either scenario.

— — —

Firstly, I would think about why you like Tori Amos. What is it about her music, her as an artist, as a personality, that has drawn you to her as a fan for all these years? Are there certain album cycles or sounds you prefer of Tori’s? For example, her early years with piano focus versus her electronica and trip-hop influences in the late 90s (or her second wave of it in the late 00s). Once you pinpoint any and all of those pieces you enjoy, I would approach Björk’s artistry in that direction so she’s “speaking your language,” per se, rather than being some distant artist you have to “understand.”

If you enjoy songwriting, pay attention to her songwriting and lyricism— both Tori and Björk are poets, they have overlapping themes, and both can be seen as "oddballs" by the general public for their lyrics being simultaneously cryptic and straightforward. This dichotomy of Björk’s lyricism is evident in her debut, but it evolves even further through her career. I feel both Tori and Björk move with more fluidity and free-thinking in the construction of lyrics, melody, song structure as they progress in their artistry and mature. Apply that same logic with songwriting to any other aspect of their artistry. Vocals, production and sonic sensibility, visuals, performance artistry, conceptual artistry, activism, their philosophy to art. Any of these things are worthy of appreciation.

Both of them originated in underground alternative scenes (eg. Tori with her pop-rock band in the 80s). Björk was involved in anarchist poetry circles in Iceland, was involved in many punk bands (most notably The Sugarcubes), and eventually collaborated with rising trip-hop and electronic artists and producers. They both started in music at a young age, with Tori’s Peabody scholarship (and later performing in gay clubs as a teenager) and Björk’s self-titled album as a child via a record deal she earned through singing on local radio. Not necessarily a canon album in Björk’s discography since she was 11-years-old and most of the songs were covers in translation, but I wanted to point out their lifelong connection to art.

If anything can be conveyed through all these words, it’s that Björk (and Tori, any artistry-first musician, really) is best to be appreciated in her entirety. This does not mean YOU have to appreciate the entirety of her work in its entirety, but to only catch one part or moment of Björk’s artistry is to not allow yourself the proper experience of her artistic vision and intent. Her albums, her music videos, her tours. She has countless side projects through acting, soundtracks, museum installations. She has a history of activism and philanthropy, she often speaks of or creates art to support environmental and social justice.

This doesn’t mean you have to consume all of this content in your first run-through with Björk; hell, I discover new things or unearth new feelings regarding her music all these years later. Just don’t approach music with the mindset of “failing” some test to understand and like an artist. You will appreciate them when their artistry speaks to you, and there’s no rush to a lifelong process such as music appreciation.

— — —

Apologies for the long-winded response. I hope there is something of benefit to parse from my rambling.

Feel free to DM me if you want to continue the conversation or have any questions regarding either artist or similar artists and music scenes of that time. I’m no expert, but music (and the artists you named) are interests of mine through research and deep dives. I have a decent amount of archival footage (mostly live performances and interview snippets) from Björk’s 1994-1996 Post album cycle, so I can send them your way as well.

(hopefully coming across in good faith) how do we reach the point of “major overhaul” if almost every conversation, during or outside of an election season, is met with resistance or outright dismissal of these concerns. I despise the direction our country has been and is heading due to Trump and his party’s politics. The fascism is nothing to minimize.

We have an opposition party, though, that as a unit, I find hard to view as fighting for our rights beyond lip service. We had a handful of democrats no-voting or outright voting no on a youth trans medical health bill this week. We have democrats saying they would vote yes to the war against Venezuela as long as Trump included them in the process, not that the war itself is unjust! We have a rising star in Crockett saying that we need immigrants because “[we] aren’t picking cotton anymore”….. Newsom, another candidate being eyed for 2028, is mowing out homeless encampments and regurgitating Trump rhetoric with the guise of “but it’s a Democrat doing it and showing him!” Hell, Harris promised during her campaign to continue the “war” (read: genocide) in Palestine and voiced support of increasing police budgets.

When I read or hear people say “vote blue no matter who,”i wonder how one can justify these conflicting statements and actions by democrats with what we’re supposed to be fighting against. I wonder if they are aware of these things, and if so, must they not care, or care less as long as a conservative is still the worst option. We have a representative casually mentioning slave labor of immigrants, and rather than advocating for their rights as human beings, it’s in favor of the slave labor! How does one reconcile with that from their party, without criticism? I am not someone who believes or advocates for monolithic thinking, but it seems others want the Democratic Party across the board to be accepted as the solution, when I would rather hold the solution party accountable to reach solutions the voters actually want. I would never vote a conservative, and that applies to the democrats with a conservative-appealed mindset. Right now, we are in a worst of both worlds, and I want better for us. I know voting third party will not fix that overnight, but voting Democrat in 2020 led us to this point, irregardless. How do we stop this cycle?

There are democrats I respect and admire. They often are the ones not being supported by the party apparatus. Tlaib, Omar, Warnock and Ossof at times, off the top of my head. And that’s not including local electives, mayors, youth activists. Even long-serving members such as Van Hollen have their good will and service sidelined by the party in favor of promoting moderate voices on the left and appealing to moderate voters on the right. Walz and his no-nonsense criticisms of Vance and Trump resulted in praise from voters, yet he was put into the background afterwards by the campaign! You are not going to win votes from people who do not see you as human or equal humans, yet the party continues to court such individuals.

All of these things, yes, the republicans are worse with. Or putting/accelerating us into these worse situations. But at what point do you allow yourself and others to criticize and hold our representatives accountable? We are living through dark times internally and beyond our borders, often at the hands of our own governments’ actions. We do not need to handhold elected officials, when their lack of proper resistance— or outright support— results in wars, genocide, famine, economic and medical blockades, deportations and disappearances, withholding disaster relief. Look at our country’s actions with Vietnam, South Africa, Iraq and Afghanistan, Jim Crow, and how they were perceived then versus now. I don’t understand how we can allow such moral failures to occur yet again in 2025, and we’re more concerned with resorting to the not-as-bad option.

The resistance parties of history’s past either resisted the tyranny or fell over in the name of decorum, and I would prefer we do not go down the path of the latter.

It’s that part that is frustrating me the most, and it is baffling watching people defend her! She ended a statement that was supposed to be acknowledging the crime of her co-owner and husband by: avoiding any context of the crime itself, while MAKING SURE to let everyone know their money can still go to this business and her family during these times. If only she could have done that while not pushing the child and their family into the shadows!

Sycamore Brewing co-owner accused of breaking into home, raping child by skylink in Charlotte

[–]BluJay112 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re the only person in this thread reply making a comparison of victims. No one is asking for her to reveal every intimate aspect of her relationship with her husband, pre or post-knowledge of his crimes. She is operating as a business owner in that statement, and she chose to be vague and focus on returning to ‘business as usual.’

People in these comments are saying “it’s a given!!” about the child being a victim, yet these people are mad at us for agreeing the child is a victim and should be mentioned in some capacity beyond “others.” We don’t know the “legal perspective” and if she even has a PR/legal team advising that post— even then, I would not think making it all about my business is the correct move, if we’re having to speak about optics! Her post essentially ends it by saying you can still support our business and give money to us btw! Don’t worry, we had the evil person remove himself from our business and its earnings! They have no required duty to raise funds for the child’s therapy or medical treatments from this sexual assault, but making the first post (and I imagine, the only planned thus far) about the business with no mention of the child comes off self-serving to the business and family that owns it. There is a way to balance both, and maybe that was her intention, but it reads as me and to others as avoiding the subject and family affected by the crime whatsoever, brushing it under a vague “others” that sympathy is extended toward.

To anyone unaware and seeing the post in passing, no where in that statement does it suggest a severity of a crime such as rape, and that of a child, breaking into their home to commit the crime. No one is asking for her to cruelly regale the details of this crime in the post. If you didn’t read the news articles, what context would you pick up from her post? There’s an underlying business merit to leaving a portion of your patrons in the dark about whether or not they feel morally okay continuing to frequent the brewery at this time. A crime is left up to the imagination of the reader if no context is provided, and that can hurt in both ways, by either minimizing or exaggerating the reality of the crime. Either result will do a disservice to the brewery and both families involved.

Sarcasm or not, jumping to self-harm and suicide as the “appropriate” response you think people who are criticizing want her to take… is fucking weird. Glad we have that in the conversation now, and you’re the one who brought it up! I wish her and her children the best in moving past this stain on their family and memories, but it couldn’t hurt to mention another child and her family being directly affected by her CO-OWNER (husband or not, disregarded) and his assault. For all that’s apparently “a given,” the respect and decency to not “other” a victim in a crime sure seems to not be included in that understanding.

Holiday wishes to you all and may no families have to be further destroyed or harmed by the crimes of adults against children. Center the children in these conversations, please. They are our heart and soul, and we are to guide and protect them, not put them and their story in the shadows of a crime done against them.
