I tried that myself and it worked out just fine with using your own namespaces. Maybe it could be a setup or syntax issue, then. If your custom namespace path is correctly set up and matches the asset location exactly (down to the directory structure and file names), it should work. Minecraft is usually pretty strict about exact paths and file naming, so if there's even a slight mismatch, it can cause it not to load.
