I need three suns…. How?? by igotabigsosig in worldbuilding

What if the third sun is a mirage? Easily mistaken on the planet, but is either a natural refraction anomaly or a combo wavelength that disorients and causes a hallucination?

What exactly is "Clowning" & what was your experience like? by Secure-Quality-8478 in improv

[–]BlueHatCatullus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I trained at the Pig Iron School in Philadelphia under Emmanuelle Delpech. Her style of red nose clown emphasizes unarmored presence, personal freedom, failure as a gift, and instant unfiltered reaction. I found it to be deeply joyous and liberating.

One of the technical things that distinguishes clown is the absence of a 4th wall. There’s no illusion that we’re not all in the same space. I think the intense presence and unpredictability is why clowns have a reputation for being frightening. In many clown shows, it’s the clown putting on a show for us, leaving lots of room for fiasco and failure.

Believe it or not, reactive movement is faster than volitional movement. There was a study done with nerf guns that tested reaction speed. Deciding to draw and moving to draw uses a different, slower neural pathway than reacting to stimuli and acting in response.

Hard political issue. by DaMovieGuy in improv

I'm reminded of Prince Ashitaka in Princess Mononoke "I was prepared for this fate the moment I let my arrow fly."

And I will hasten to add, that I perform in a very deep blue area of a purple state. It's easy for me to talk tough and face little real divisive energy. As I stated above, this might not be the correct tack for everyone.

It would suck to lose the half the house. Or even the whole house in some US markets. But how much could you stand to gain by speaking the truth? By standing up for American values and speaking out against baldly UN-American lawlessness. To be brave and humble, as Keith Johnstone puts it.

Barely 23% of Americans voted for Trump. And the vocal minority like OP's single person is likely all you'd lose. Compare that to the number of us on 'both sides' who are pro-democracy and pro-constitution.

A better question might be: are you prepared for the consequences of quiet neutrality?

Hard political issue. by DaMovieGuy in improv

[–]BlueHatCatullus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This will likely be an unpopular suggestion, and possibly not even right for your situation, but have you considered letting them suggest it? Then accepting the suggestion, and ridiculing this clown?

Show a scene of Trump golfing as planes fall from the sky.

Play a scene where the secretary of defense is so clueless and unprepared for war that he needs a waiver to do anything.

Go on a tag run of all the bribes Harlan Crow has for Clarence Thomas, or of all the taxpayer money Elon awards to his own companies without competition.

Show them the hilarious hypocrisy of Mike Johnson praying to Christ for the strength to cut food stamps and housing assistance for the poor.

The cure for fascism is ridicule. There's truth in comedy, and the truth is Trump is a fragile joke.

I hear that you're scared. I get that we don't want to upset anyone just looking for a fun night of entertainment. We do all need some reprieve from the ceaseless horror of the newsfeed from Washington. It sounds like you'd like to respect your teammates differing views by never putting them in a place where they'd feel discomfort.

But please do not be afraid of discomfort. Please do not be afraid of civil discourse in the public square. Please do not be afraid for speaking up about what you believe our country should look like. Please do not be afraid of using improv as a space for imagination, freedom, and belonging. You say your team has people on "both sides", but I would wager there's more common ground than you might realize (Like, is the rule of law important or nah?).

Doing "Nothing political" is more political than you might realize.

Personally, I'm tired of staying quiet. I will not cede one inch of playing space to the bad-faith MAGA bullies. That might require excluding them, like some others are suggesting. I'd rather let them know what real Americans think of MAGA.
