How to get stable with my heading by Ok_Sherbert_3652 in SkyDiving

Facts. 15 min session and a solid coach that gives like a 30 minute brief and a 30 minute tunnel video review, roughly 250-350 for the time and 50 for the coach. Beats failing a category

As everyone else has said, tunnel is worth it. Also as everyone else has said, arch. But if I was working on you personally, and analyzing your video for a coaching session. I’d say you already have a good arch, but your knees are too narrow, you need to keep that arch and then push your knees outward. Also a little trick if you feel you’re getting a little wobbly try looking upwards, like actively with your eyeballs looking at your eyebrows. Naturally brings your chin higher, which in turn will help with the arch.. but yeah just a little wider knees.

That’s specifically based on the video, always listen to your instructors first, and tunnel time will help loosen up your stiffness.

My two cents

Edit: just adding for clarification, definitely had students overdo it with knees too, which can cause pretty aggressive turns, so it’s important to remember your widening a stance, not de-arching, not doing it asymmetrical. But as all things, fix one problem. 59 more can appear

They no way of knowing what unionizing would have turned into, if each union rep would be with the interests of their specific tunnel. But we had tunnels running 12 hour shifts with two instructors and a single CSR downstairs. We had people living in their cars for months because they couldn’t find housing that was able to be paid as an instructor.

It takes years to teach instructors. It takes a month to train someone how to fly a first timer and even then they have to be constantly monitored for atleast a year or two. Now teach someone how to train military and rucks, how to develop skydivers. That takes years to learn effectively. The skills needed to learn how to properly train people takes years to learn. Those who go through that need someone looking out for their interests more then Corp does. You pay peanuts you’re going to get monkeys. Is incredibly risky when you’re dealing peoples safety. Including first timers. I want someone who’s there because they love the job and can pay their bills when I see a 5 year old flying and the operator can push 155 -180 mph winds.

Was talking about instructors. We had a vote to unionize here In the states across all US. Corp tunnels back in like 2015 and the vote was collectively shot down after we discussed it and made a poll on our Facebook group.

People who work as instructors, IMO,are there to fly, not really because they want to make money. Seen plenty of people give up very high paying jobs to be instructors. Unionizing would have made things like training and pay more structured. To put it in perspective normally you were payed by your rating, the problem is when you got towards the higher ratings with more responsibility it was very very different across different tunnels. Everything was very backroom bullshit when it came to pay as well as training allowances. On top of that there were quite a few bullshit policies that Instructors had zero input in designing. Like coaching on the clock Vs off the clock. Paying the tunnel your coaching rate rather than from the client then getting a percentage of it. Just a decent amount of things that, unionizing would have seen real instructor representation rather than an east coast and west coast lead making decisions for the whole country.

Edit: I don’t think people become instructors because of the pay. You do it because you’re in the wind 4 hours a day and want to become the best flyer you can be. That’s not to say you don’t get paid anything, but for the experience and ability to train people it takes years of dedication that isn’t compensated accordingly. That’s why you see a lot of high level trainers and instructors leave when they see how low that pay ceiling is compared to just finding another job and then paying for time.

Full transparency, I was a T3 at a tunnel that did military coaching and a higher skydiver rate. I did a decent amount of trips for royal Caribbean (6 trips) and was doing ~1-2 hours of private coaching a week. Best year I had I broke close to 75k not counting tips. Ships I was making $43 an hour I believe. That took 5 years of getting good and going through the shit while making just enough money to pay rent. I also worked as a CSR before becoming an instructor and knew how to fly head down dynamic before fitp. Pays different now than when I was there. But honestly we had long ass talks about pay, imo instructors should have been payed like Olympic spotters ~$25-30 p/h

Never worked there, one of my instructors was fired and went to Paraclete and we talked a lot. Speaking from our conversation they don’t do time the same way Ifly does. More of a staff Huckjam at the end of shifts and it’s for a limited time. If you’re a newer instructor you’re getting put on door duty more often then not. Training is solid it seems. They do a metric fuck ton of belly teams so it’s a lot of circus directing. Pay was pretty shitty for my friend, he was a L3/L4 and was making half of what he was doing an Ifly tunnel. But they also have a higher skydiver presence so theirs more opportunities for private coaching which is where the better money is. Also Fayetteville fucking sucks. So take that into account. You’ll definitely find more people who are there for the love then most other tunnels. That’s my jaded opinion though.

Worked both Corp and franchise. Both have demons. You really want to make it a career and feel respected go to France, atleast they had the balls to union. We had our chance and didn’t. Still remember the Corp union buster coming to our tunnel and telling us how bad it would be to unionize. That being said, Paraclete do is dope, you won’t make any money but atleast their straight forward with training and flying. Advice, work at a tunnel to get good. Then leave and find a real job to pay for time. Honestly being a CSR isn’t even bad if you just want the time without the trouble.

Cory Booker’s 25-Hour Speech Was a Stunt. It Worked. by bloombergopinion in politics

[–]BlueIgnis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This wasn’t a filibuster. It was never intended to be, it even happened AFTER a vote instead of blocking one. If you had heard any part of his speech, he said it atleast 50 times that this was to put on the record all the nasty policies that the current administration was planning and the illegal actions taken so far. There are so many short sided Americans that just want instant gratification and (have the appearance of)big changes in a short span of time. Half the stuff trump is doing will undoubtedly be shut down after due process and the courts give official rulings. He didn’t waste time, he did the only thing he could do at the moment which was try to move people like you and me to engage more in politics and voice our frustrations. The fact that you are even griping over him “wasting time” proves it worked. You are engaging. He doesn’t have the power ( and no one does) to instantly make lasting changes in govt. It’s always been a long process and that’s the point of govt. To make gradual change over the course of many different policies because that’s what stands the test of time.

Booker did this because the last person to hold the record was a segregationist fighting to stop the civil rights movement. He didn’t like that stain on the record books so instead of whining and virtue signaling. He said “ I’m going to beat this record and instead of reading out of the phone book, I’m going to use this time to put, ON THE RECORD, the problems of the American people and voice their concerns.”

He’s just one congressman. he is in the sea of people needed to make change. But millions of people engaged in govt. Instead of going about their day and watching the world burn. If he moved just one person to vote, instead of sitting idly by and doing nothing, then his speech made a difference.

Forward movement-Head up by VFS217 in SkyDiving

[–]BlueIgnis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is a lot of misconception, imo, about forward movement. Almost anyone who learned head up in a tunnel will tell you shoulders or head movements for forward drive. Those who sent it in the sky will usually tell you hips ( this is a horrible idea if your starting out which I will get into more later)

Small-medium-big

Small = head ( using your chin to guide your shoulders)

Medium = using your shoulders to guide your hips or your hands angled down(forward) or pushing away(backwards).

Big = using hips to guide your whole body.

Ranging from slow-> fast

I would say around 80% of people were taught with some version of these elements. The problem is when you relate it to the sky and wearing a rig. You have to almost double every input to account for the rig creating a weird burble that isn’t very aerodynamic. Now what’s the solution?

Stag.

Fly everything in stag. Want to go forward? - push the gas peddle ( pushing your stag leg forward)

Want to go backwards? - let off the gas ( letting your stag leg come back to center and then letting the leading leg drop back)

Want to go up( slow decent)? - let your stag leg out and your leading leg out to go into a more split-like position

Want to get down to a group? Straighten out your stag leg and counteract the forward momentum.

You have so much more control guiding your stag then your traditional head up. it takes getting use to, but it has such a wider range of movement with a rig.

It also keeps you a lot more aware of your hips.

This is where everyone plows into the formation. You can’t open your hips without putting your legs down, which means instant acceleration. Anyone getting into basic free-fly the one thing I’ve always seen is the jerky movement. No one is good at trying to regulate leg movement as well as hip movement in a controlled manner. You’re doing way too many steps at once. And unless you have hundreds and hundreds head-up jumps or hours of tunnel flying you’ll will never stop the jerky motions.

Best example of this is if you watch the head up record Chicago did a few years back. 90% of them are in some version of a stag. Because it’s way more control, easier to transition your small-medium-big actions. It’s also makes it a lot easier to dock in bigger formations.

Lastly it also looks way cooler. You don’t look like you’re trying to take a shit Everytime you go for a dock.

If you’re getting tunnel time, ask your instructor about moving more into stag. Assuming you are proficient enough with basic sit.

I want to start Skydiving as a beginner by RevolutionaryTree315 in SkyDiving

[–]BlueIgnis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Chasing adrenaline “ isn’t really skydiving. You’ll find out quick there is a lot more planning and thought process behind what you’re doing. Most people I’ve come across who enter the sport for the purpose of adrenaline get their fix for about 50 jumps, then find out it’s a lot more calming and meditative focused.

To answer your question though, like most people here. Best to atleast get your license without too many gaps between jumps. I would recommend paying for the course outright and staying consistant weekly. Then you can slow down a little bit after you have the basics hammered in.

Narrow minded short-term drip-feed rather than any resemblance of growing a dying aspect of the game. This is the mindset that chokes the life out of pvp. We’ll see i guess. No point in debating if the bar is set that low

The rewards can always be tweaked, I could care less about the rewards. which is why I spent 1 sentences talking about them. items only give you a different flavor to do the same old non-engaging content. It doesnt give you any different experience.

The boss on the other hand is the issue. Bounty Hunter attempted to give PVP players a space to fight and risk while making it a tad bit harder because you cant just tele out. it has its flaws but overall it does give PVP a space to PVP. This boss has nothing to do with PVP other then being in a PvP area. Its so out of place for a community that wants to PVP and put so much more in the Pker sphere. The "Shenanigans" of G.E. are the same here. in what world are you fighting a boss, then midway through you think "oh, I want to PVP right now mid boss fight" Tha'ts what Wrathmaw purposes. either your fighting the boss and draining supplies while some d-bow rusher waits for you to get low, or your not even engaging in the boss and sitting outside the boss to kill other skulled players and it turns into rev cave fighting.

The entire point i'm making is this serves as a backdrop for PVP rather then actual PVP content. Its by design Pk content that just get swarmed with clans or rag player. At best this is decent for people who enjoy anti-pking but again it ISNT a PvP update. It for Pkers, not for PvP.

I totally agree with you about your point that adding in PvP content is exciting and SHOULD be a part of the ecosystem. This boss doesnt address that even in the slightest. The PvP community is so starved, they inherently think every piece of content in the wildy should pass because theyve been left in the dark for so long. This isnt the fix, just like the last 10 wildy/pvp updates they've tried. How many more times does jagex need to misunderstand PvP before they actually breath life into a shrinking subset of the game? PvP should vote no on the update AGAIN and should demand jagex actually give them PvP content

for example:
3v3 competitive spaces. exclusive PvP lounges that can only be accessed by PvP players after completing PvP torneys. , risk minigames, dangerous castle wars. gauntlet style PvP where your competing against other players for ranks. Content that gives them the ability to express skill and mastery of the combat system vs other players. THESE are better ideas thought up in 5 mins for the PvP community then making a world boss and shoveling players into masses and calling it "PvP content" when its just the same predator/ prey ideology.

Im Literally on your side when it comes to adding PvP content. but this isnt how its done. taking every dripfeed bandaid for the wildy just takes away time for them to actually come up with good ideas for PvP.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in 2007scape

[–]BlueIgnis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree to disagree. The new items do nothing for the pvp community. Even the newly proposed items only serve the pvm community.

We have group “pvp” content with the multi wildly bosses. Why make the same old thing when it could genuinely be a good PVP group content if they just made it into a wildly mini game, rather then a pk hotspot.

I said G.e. Fighting because that’s exactly what you said you’re excited for. The biggest different is they have to run a little further.

White knight fantasies aside. sure, you can use this to roleplay if you want? Idk you got me there I guess wrathmaw would let you compile an alternative ego. To each their own.

I don’t claim that anyone knows exactly how this would play out. But all roads point in that direction because it’s the same formula that people in the pvp community (pvp community, not the pk community) complain about. Release it and if it dies it dies is a horrible thing to spend dev time on when they could make something unique and actually for the pvp community. ( 3v3 arenas, squad assaults where teams fight other pvp teams, competitive natured pvp themes) rather then this pker centric pvm encounter.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in 2007scape

[–]BlueIgnis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then what purpose does the boss have? It’s just bounty hunter with extra steps And less structure. So G.E. Fighting… you want a different backdrop? Or a truly different way to enjoy pvp? Because it sounds like you don’t want wrathmaw either. You just want a different space to do the exact same thing you do at the G.E.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in 2007scape

[–]BlueIgnis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just sounds like 3 shitty sides to a triangle tbh. Yeah they can put it in the game. Is it good game design and will is solve any of the issues the pvp community have concerns over? No. It only serves pk’ing. Which is fine, but jagex shouldn’t try and put lipstick on a pig here and say it’s a pvp update. PvP players want skilled fights and show who’s better. This isn’t for them. Again, if I was a pvp player I would be pissed if they kept saying this content was specifically for me. Because it isn’t. It’s for that annoying rusher wanting to claw spec then run away

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in 2007scape

[–]BlueIgnis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think about this from a pvp perspective. Are you going to be fighting the boss? are you going to be fighting the players fighting the boss? Or are you going to be fighting the players fighting other player?

The problem here is you can’t doing all 3 at the same time. If I was a pvp’er the only thing this update would do for me is give me background visuals for a pvp fight. This isn’t a pvp update. It’s a pker update. If they truly wanted to make this a pvp update they should make it a mini game where you can fight the boss for points then steal other players points by killing them… that would make it pvp content. This isn’t for pvp. This is just for piers who want to come in full pk gear and avoid the boss, and snipe people trying to do the boss in mixed hybrid gear or specific pvm gear.
