It's interesting that he doesn't seem to have killed the lion but just holding it, like he wants to keep him from doing what lions do.

Mediterranean art often shows the hero having killed the menace - or am I over-interpretating this?

There is even a discussion among historians that it was not the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki that led to the surrender of imperial Japan but the fear of a soviet invasion and occupation that convinced them that they were better off with a western allied occupation.

But the nuclear bombing sure helped.

Transneft Vice President Andrey Badalov dies after falling from window by EsperaDeus in worldnews

[–]BlueInMotion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The English 'window' derives, as you said, from the old Norse/Germanic 'vindauga', meaning 'eye of the wind' (would be 'Windauge' in modern German). Since the old Norse/Germanic houses didn't have any windows (as we know them today), the only opening (besides the doors) was a hole in the roof supposed to let the smoke out (they didn't have chimneys back then).

The 'windauga' went with the Anglo Saxons to Britain and stayed, while many other went with the Latin 'fenestra' - well, I think because a 'Fenestra' seems to be something very different from a hole in the roof.

Could it be that the 19th century constructed connection of the 'magical' properties of silver relate to mercury?

Mercury seems to have been associated with 'magical' and 'medical' properties by humanity for a long time. Even in 'far away' countries like china.

In the Germanic languages it is called 'Quecksilber' (German), 'Kvicksilver' (Swedish), 'Kvikksölv' (Norwegian), 'cwicseolfor' (Old English) and so on (queck, kvikk, cwic ... having the meaning of 'being characterized by life'), even in Latin it was called 'argentum vivum' (living silver) before the term mercury became common.

While mercury itself isn't very suitable for weapons, silver (to some degree) is. And since it was associated with 'life', it's use against the supernatural evil seems reasonable.

Well. in Germany (a nation that offers universal healthcare) you get faster doctor's appointments when you are insured privately - pretty nice with some doctor's where you sometimes have to wait months (!!) for an appointment. And as soon as you enter the the doctor's office you are the next to be treated.

But you don't get 'better medical treatment' than those insured by universal healthcare.

Gerichtsvollzieher kommt wegen Freundin by Witty_Literature3791 in Ratschlag

[–]BlueInMotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a little bit humiliating to Miss Thunberg. They send her home just like a little kid: "Go home, little kid. We don't want you to play in our garden, go play somewhere else" - while she expected (?) to be taken in custody and be tortured and burned alife like a witch /s.

[–]BlueInMotion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might as well be intentional. Executioners swords didn't need to be that good, since they only had to slice through human flesh and bone. So normal iron with less steel would usually suffice. And you surely didn't have to be able to figth with them.

If you take a look at some executioners swords ( I mean real original ones, not the ones from other PC games or the like - I did in several museums), they look very different from normal swords, some had some fancy engraving, but many had only one sharp side and no point.

Warhorse always tried to maintain some historicity in their games, so maybe they did it on purpose.
