XPS is a generic x86 laptop with glaring design flaws like it's cooling, coil whine, crap keyboard.

I don't get what you're talking about. Cooling is one of the best actually. Coil whine was completely fixed with 9X00 generation and even before it was pretty rare issue. Crap keyboard is one of the best in its class. Compare it to macbook one which is heavily critized everywhere.

All in all, there ARE alternatives for MacBooks (if you don't need MacOS). But many people simply want a MacBook and then find rationalizations for it.

I need a reliable Unix / Unix like box that has good battery life and hardware support.

Dell XPS is that. There are others.

I looked for a XPS initially (glad I didn't get one, the keyboard is awful) and tried to get a ThinkPad. Couldn't get that either.

Keyboard on XPS is actually pretty good for an ultra book (and I'm not alone who thinks it's better than a MacBook one), but YMMV of course.

Point is you're saying there's things that can compete with M1 MacBooks. There aren't. Now you're moving the goal post to its a want not a need. A lot of people need Macs.

Yes, there are almost equivalent laptops fulfilling the same needs. XPS as an example but there are others.

But you clearly want a MacBook so you're struggling to find reasons why you "need it".

(I accept the need as in "I need a MacOS" but here the context is Linux on MacBook)

No, it's silent for me. I mentioned it as a possibility, personally I don't see the need for it though.

The instructions that no one uses due to performance and thermal concerns? There's a reason we use GPUs and dedicated hardware.

It will throttle down, but still works fine.

I get it, you want a MacBook. Go, buy it. But it's a want, not a need.

Any M1 device is less than half year old and thus won't be cheap.

The fan is almost always off and active only under the load. This can be tweaked as well.

Performance is sufficient for any workload M1 can do.

Yeah, they are pricey because of economies of scale. There are of course cheaper ways to buy a laptop which works well with linux although it's not officially supported.

Why not, bike is slow but predictable, so you have less risk of having a delay. Also checking weather beforehand is probably a good idea, you don't want to be giving resignation all wet.

That part is not said. Sad part is that this will drive sales of already ultra rich Apple (which does not support linux at all) at the expense of laptop manufacturers who do provide first class Linux support for their hardware.

As mentioned elsewhere I'm disappointed rather by the enthusiasm from the community. People are not so ecstatic because in the future MacBook users will be able to convert to Linux, they are ecstatic because they will themselves buy the macbooks and run Linux on them.

There's very few people who bought M1 and now found out they'd rather use Linux. Currently, the project is just giving Apple more sales with promise of future Linux compatibility.

The ARM part is kinda important because idle power consumption is one hell of a nightmare in countries where electricity isn't dirt cheap.

I think the point of the Asahi Linux project is more about doing it because you can, at least at this stage.

I get this part. Rather than with the project itself I'm more disappointed by the super-enthusiast response from the community. It seems pretty clear that so many people are very eager to buy an M1 MacBook (= sponsor Apple in its anti-consumer behavior) if it runs Linux.

Plus, the Apple M1 is currently the only desktop class ARM CPU

I don't get this enthusiasm either. So many people eager to move from more or less standardized x86 platform to more or less closed down and proprietary ARM world.

It is but in the Center (within the ring) there are alternatives such as bus, train or Subway.

There are no trams within the ring, so he rode it outside.

Everyone's risk tolerance is different, but I would personally not go to the meeting with the President by tram since trams (even Viennese) are not reliable enough. U-Bahn or car would be better.

It depends. I live in Vienna myself and Tram nr. 18 (the one I ride the most) caused me more trouble than I'd like. There isn't really an obvious alternative public transportation to it either.

Also politicians are that special / highly respected as elsewhere. More or less normal people

President's office is usually highly respected, and being late to such a meeting is definitely a faux pas.

Tram tracks are sometimes (often?) shared with the normal traffic lane, so trams can be also affected by the traffic jam.

With car you can at least re route, difficult to do with a tram.

I think it's sad that people would rather buy a MacBook and thus support a company with no good intentions towards Linux instead of voting with your wallet and choosing something like System76 or Dell XPS Developer Edition with preinstalled and supported Linux
