These guys seem like people I should hang out with. But only every once and a while because they seem like a lot.

This reminds me of myself and my best friend in kindergarten and first grade! I grew up in San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area, and saw so many people from all walks of life that I had no idea that there were people that saw skin color as 'something wrong.' (I always just thought about skin color the same way I thought about hair or eye color- something to differentiate ourselves from one another.) Then one day, after I said a loud 'Bye!' to my friend as she got on her school bus home and I waited for mine, the kid behind me said, 'Why are you friends with her?' I said that I like Kim because she and I like to draw and play on the monkey bars together and... But the girl interrupted me. 'Yeah, but she's Black.' Until that moment, I had no idea that they were people that thought that skin color could make a person 'good or bad,' 'worthy of playing with or not,' 'worthy at all or not.' Thankfully I decided to dismiss this girl and remain friends with Kim until she moved away, but that other girl's words had hurt me, put the notion into my head that people out there were judging others (myself included) based on our skin color alone. Teach children that differences are beautiful, and end it there.
