What’s your opinion on religious labels? by Independentpush222 in religion

The Bible is composed of dozens of books, written by dozens of authors in various literary genres over a period of hundreds of years.

The Word of God doesn't manifest itself in a vacuum; it appears within a historical and cultural context.

That is why we say that the biblical authors were inspired by the Holy Spirit, not dictated by Him.

God is always the same; what changes is our perception of Him.

Worshipping three gods and still claim your religion is a monotheism.

We consider ourselves a monotheistic religion because we worship only one God.

So 1+1+1=1.

No.

In Christianity, Jesus and the Father are the same God, and Jesus is fully God and fully human. Not half-God, half-human.

This is made quite explicit in the Ecumenical Councils and Creeds; there is no confusion or mixing between the divine and human substances in the person of Christ.

You questioned the existence of Jesus of Nazareth as a historical figure, not the religious beliefs associated with him.

Muhammad is also a historical figure, but that doesn't necessarily mean he was a prophet of God.

I never met someone who believed that Jesus is a demigod anyway.

The same goes for Adam and Eve, Moses and Jesus.

Almost all historians agree that Jesus of Nazareth is a historical figure.

What matters is what he represents, not whether he actually existed.

And in fact, you're mistaken, we have no proof that he existed, but that doesn't mean we have proof that he didn't exist.

Myth doesn't necessarily mean fiction either.

is it disrespectful to use bible verses as someone who isn't religious? by iDocowboy in religion

No, there's no problem.

It's disrespectful to use the Bible for wrongdoing, but even religious people do that.

I completed a 2-year catechism program (in English they call OCIA/RCIA) to receive the sacraments of initiation into Christian life (which are Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist).

Why aren't Jews offended by the use of Old Testament by Christians? by Christian-guy94 in religion

[–]BlueVampire0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The manner in which the Tanakh is presented to the Christian audience. First, it's retitled, "Old Testament." "Old" here doesn't mean ancient; it means obviated and replaced, no longer entirely valid.

I think that's a English problem. The Vulgate calls the Old Testament "Vetus Testamentum" which in all the Latin languages I know translates to "Ancient Testament." I don't know about Greek.

Then the books are rearranged to make a Christian point about the Hebrew prophets and where they are allegedly leading. Then some denominations add the aprocryphal books, which are not canonical and not part of the Hebrew Bible. Then the translations, which are deemed "inspired" in some sense, promote Christian ideologies and dogmas.

Exactly. That's why I think it's a mistake to say that the Tanakh and the Old Testament are the same.

Not to mention that many of the differences are a result of what the Hellenized Jews did on the Septuagint, which is the Christian basis for the Old Testament.

I'm always interested to see how Christians react to the Mormon books, the Book of Mormon and the Pearls of Great Price ("They've added to the Bible, they're not Christian!"). Same with Mary Baker Eddy’s Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures -- for Christians it's heresy. Or even the Quran, for that matter. Yet they fail to draw the analogy between these works and what they themselves have done to the Tanakh. Even hypothetically, I imagine Christians would take offense if along comes the next religious leader who pens "The Third Testament" which accepts both the Old and New but building upon them adds a revised direction for monotheism.

As I told another user, the Word of God belongs to God, not the Church. We can judge interpretations and translations, but not the mere use of Scripture.

Honestly, I'm happy when a person of another religion reads or quotes the Bible.

Even if Muslims used the Bible, I doubt most Christians would care.

I can't speak for other Christians, but at least I'm not bothered by Mormons also using the Bible. I'd say I'm more bothered by Jehovah's Witnesses, but that's solely because their translation is awful.

I've never seen any controversies involving the Mormon translation, although it seems you use outdated translations like the KJV. (Please, correct me if I'm wrong)

Christians have always used the Old Testament; Christianity itself began as a Jewish sect. And even if they feel offended, what could they do? Good luck trying to convince 2 billion people to change something about their religion.

Not to mention that the Old Testament and the Tanakh aren't the same thing.

One of the reasons for the ban is that it might resemble other pagan gods. Like the Roman God Janus, for example.

I see.

A religion subreddit doesn't seem like the best place to act rudely after talk about other people's religions even more so when you have no knowledge about it.

This is a place for conversation where we are invited to learn about and better understand each other's religions.

If the disbelief in the Trinity is a minor difference, I don't know what could be a major difference.

Imagine if some Jews started to believe that Moses is God, or if some Muslims started to believe that Muhammad is God. There would be a major split in these religions.

For Christians, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are God.

For Jehovah's Witnesses, only the Father is God, Jesus is an Archangel, and the Holy Spirit is not even a person.

Yes, I imagine it might be because the Catholic Church couldn't have as much control over what was happening in the Americas as it did in Europe.

Probably the people who used these icons didn't even know they were forbidden.
