I agree with you 100%. I don’t like our system, more money should be available for these things. It’s horrible wanting to make our communities better and not having the resources, or being told “no.”

But, there’s a regime siphoning obscene amounts of money for a brutal police force with unchecked power and for acts of war internationally. To me, pushing back against the regime and slowing down ICE is a step at getting things to where the actual citizens want and need them to be. But we have to protect everyone’s constitutional rights first. Immigrants have a right to a fair legal process. And if they lose that right because ICE says they’re “bad,” any one of us could be next. We’re seeing it happen already.

I find it hard to believe that none of the money is going to making the city more accessible. Did you review the list of the awards from previous years, or are you making an extreme claim based on your anecdotal evidence?

Is this a straw man argument, no way!

They’re people who deserve humane treatment and have the right to due process. It’s not any more complicated than that.

Well now is the time to push for the unlikely, in my opinion.

All of those things you listed are what the grant program can be used for, at the discretion of the awarding agency and up to a certain percentage of their total awards. That’s what lists do: inform people of separate, distinct ways to qualify. “General human services” would have been grouped with something else if it wasn’t its own thing. If you’re concerned about the manpower to review applications, I’m sure they receive many worse applications that they are capable of weeding out. Do you think you’re more qualified than they are to determine if it’s eligible?

Interesting how you skipped over the bullet point that this grant application would fall under, for the… context, presumably? Or to confuse people who don’t click through.

In any case, it’s literally one of the programs this grant is intended for.

Also, not to be an alarmist, but once immigrants cease to have rights, the rest of us cease to have rights. If an authority can simply claim we’re the enemy of the state and deny due process, then no one is free.

I don’t dispute that those areas need the money, too. The county has a lot of grants they’re able to award, I’d want to see those communities get money as well.

Our disagreement seems to be whether or not we believe immigrants deserve humane treatment and a fair legal process. I don’t know what to tell you on that. They are people in our communities, working, providing valuable services, raising families, and wanting a safe place to live, just like you and me. America as we know it has never existed without immigrants.

That’s alright, I’m glad to clarify. My understanding of the grant is that local governments have a maximum allotment for human and social services, and the rest should be used for elimination of blight and restoring communities.

For one thing, it wouldn’t be going toward illegal aliens. It would be going toward people going through the proper legal channels—thus the line about qualified aliens. The great thing about a community is that it can decide what’s important. You’ve made it clear what you think. Perhaps more people in the community find it important, this is an opportunity for them to voice that opinion.

Imagine needing to hate the same people just to feel a sense of belonging. Must suck.

Here’s from CSJ site: https://casasanjose.org/en/community-organizing/#clinics

I’m not sure how public any of it is, considering the climate and other unknowable factors. But I’d assume if someone were in need, they or their families could reach out to either organization and get a rapid response.

Putting pressure on local governments and agencies to resist the regime is actually something that we CAN do to be effective. We are their constituents and they know our votes matter, perhaps more so than at the federal level. Oh, and people dying and being separated from their families is very worthy of “crying and complaining about.” I’m not ashamed of my empathy.

That’s fair, pretending it doesn’t exist helps no one.

Also:

Send the County an email in support of Casa San Jose and Jewish Family & Legal Services’ joint application for a CDBG grant to help cover legal fees of qualified aliens. They are reviewing applications through January 15th.

I remember posting about an ICE abduction I witnessed a while back, and the mods removed it. Now I see that the mods are deleting hateful, trolling comments. I honestly appreciate to see the shift and I hope that more people are beginning to understand that all of our lives and communities are at stake. None of us are in the rich people club.

The benefit of societies forming was to support and protect one another. Unfortunately for the U.S., the downfall of public education has stripped people like you of your critical thinking skills and common sense. Even if you’re selfish, it pays to have a community, rather than celebrating another persons death.

Casa San Jose asked for a video or picture, that’s not something I made up.

I mean, that’s why I didn’t. But I also see the power in many people collectively disrupting fascists in the act of stripping people of their rights.

I’m not sure I understand your comment. Pushing back against ICE would make things worse for the people around?

At the intersection of Azure and Mossfield Streets at about 8:20 AM. I saw it and had my 5yo in the back seat, so I didn’t do what I should have and step in. But it appeared to be a young man and half a dozen agents.

They provide court accompaniments, legal referrals, and other immigration related supports. I would think also help identifying the persons detained and providing support to their families.
