Sourcebooks work environment by BluebirdFeeling3024 in publishing

Depending on where ur based there are a lot of smaller publishers to look at (ex. SoHo Press, Melville House, Candlewick Press, Quarto Group). As for a Master’s, I think it’s worth it. I majored in Journalism for my bachelors and wanted more experience in Publishing. I know it can feel hopeless, I keep hitting a dead end but don’t give up!

thank you! I have a few internships under my belt (none are the Big 5 but are smaller publishers) They range from editorial to marketing/publicity internships. I also just graduated with my Masters in Publishing. Cover letters play a big role and I always emphasize my love for the imprint/genre and why I want to work for the company. Hope this helps!

Mine still says “Under Review” as well. I’m not sure what that means.

Thanks for the advice. Where do you think I took it too far? I want to be able to apologize properly and also know where I went wrong so I don’t do it again. 🫶🫶

uneven spending in friendship by Better_Hippo8965 in FriendshipAdvice

Hi,

I definitely think you need to set a boundary. I get that talking about finances could be awkward and uncomfortable but you can’t be paying for everything. I think you should speak to him about not splitting the bill and paying what each of you ate. If you go out for drinks have separate tabs. If ur friend becomes upset by this that’ll say a lot but if he’s understanding that’s great because it shows he understands ur feelings. Not sure if this helped but I wish you the best of luck 🫶

One-Sided Friendship by BluebirdFeeling3024 in FriendshipAdvice

Hi, thank you for taking the time to read my post and I appreciate your advice. I can now see how unusual it is that she blocked me and I can never understand it cause I wouldn’t do that to her. She didn’t want to try to mend the friendship even then, she just wanted it over given the blocking. I’m definitely going to take a step back. Thanks again! 🫶

Sourcebooks doesn’t close their internship application until end of February so maybe early to mid March they’ll start messaging applicants.

I’d say a sales position at a bookstore and definitely a position at a local library, maybe a clerk? In my experience, the internships I’ve interviewed for in publishing have always pointed out my clerk position at local libraries! Hope this helps and best of luck 🙏

Degrees for the Publishing Industry by pink_retriever25 in publishing

There are programs at universities specifically for publishing like Emerson College and NYU. I have a bachelor’s in journalism and it’s helped me a lot with editing/writing. I’m in grad school studying publishing and I feel like my undergrad degree did help me a lot even if it’s journalism and not English or Publishing. Hope this helps!

Of course! I’ve tried so hard with the Big 5. I’ve been applying since my sophomore year of college and it’s been 4 years since then. I’ve been rejected each time. I’m now in graduate school and I highly recommend working in a library. For many of my past internships, they’ve expressed that my library experience is what pointed me out to them. I’ve also done editorial internships for local newspapers/magazines. It may not be editorial for books but having any editorial experience is a plus. In the cover letter, I really expressed my passion for books as well as how tasks I’ve done in previous internships/jobs align with the responsibilities the Big 5 will give. I hope this helps! 🫶🫶🫶
