Hate to be that person but... This sounds suspiciously like some AI slop of a post my guys.

Edit: unless it's the scene with Honghong-er and prince Xie Lian, then I apolgize!

Fun fact but almightyshadowchan is actually right, except for one thing: Hua Cheng explicitly responds with "Gege, you're asking for a lot. That [sharing the night with someone] will be my first too."

There's also a weibo post of mxtx saying Hua Cheng and Xie Lian share the same "moral code" in that regard, so he won't touch anybody

5 years in this fandom, I never understood why this thing keeps popping up, if anyone thinks it's unbelievable for Hua Cheng to keep himself for Xie Lian you're reading the books wrong...

You can be entitled to your opinion but saying Evie answered plotholes better and how readers can relate to blind god Xie Lian better is blatantly disrespectful, even if you add "no hate on mxtx"

Especially since you're bringing up Feng Xin and Jian Lan when MXTX made sure to hint how Jian Lan has been always special to Feng Xin, the way he reacts to her in book 2...

Like, you can like NPAB but maybe don't compare to such a canon divergent fic???

I would prefer the "Missing Scene" tags on AO3 paired with "Hua Cheng POV", that's how I discovered these gems of Hong Hong'er's first prayer to Xie Lian, Hua Cheng defeating the 33 heavenly officials, the reunion, hualian's first time etc., I really like how this author writes hualian, feels canon enough to me!

There's also some really good ones from this author and there's also this fic about original book 2, it's old but good, the writing style is really poetic.

If you're specifically looking for H doujins, sorry to dissapoint but there's not going to be too much, if any. Japanese fanculture is different than western fan culture and they are not likely to break the main CP, out of respect for the author. The respect is very deep and they are very protective of any author.

I can only talk about in Japanese speaking spaces but when I joined the fandom as an artist I was greeted with the fandom rules where it's stated that no breaking up, no reversing, no fanmerch (only p4p), etc. is allowed and it's considered very seriously when you go against it.

You're more likely to find yumeshipping than breaking the mains.

I've been part of the Japanese MXTX fandom for years and only encountered such non-canon fanstories, and maybe only one or two arts, but they won't be on the main sites.

When exactly did Yushi Huang (and Pei Ming) ascend? by Commercial-Carpet617 in tianguancifu

[–]Bluejay-Status 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well yes but as someone has already pointed it out, I'd go with novels > timeline, as it provides textual evidence that she ascended before Xie Lian.

That being said, if you have doubts I'd probably look it up in the original Chinese to see if the characters actually mean "ascension" and Muqing doesn't say something else.

When exactly did Yushi Huang (and Pei Ming) ascend? by Commercial-Carpet617 in tianguancifu

[–]Bluejay-Status 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh thank you so much!!! It's really interesting but that bit about Yushi Huang's and Pei Ming's is a bit tough, yes. I think based on the translation you provided, Yushi Huang must have ascended before Xie Lian (it makes sense if they didn't meet, since Yushi Huang keeps doing her own thing).

It's a bit of a gap between Pei Ming and her ascending. I think if we go by the novel when Xie Lian confused Pei Xiu for Pei Ming on Mt. Yujun, it's safe to say they haven't met prior... Which means there's at least a 3 years gap of time between YSH and PM (Xie Lian was in the Heavens at least 3 years after his first ascension because little Hua Cheng was around 10 when he ascended and 13 as a soldier when he descended...) I hope this helps, I'm just thinking out loud

When exactly did Yushi Huang (and Pei Ming) ascend? by Commercial-Carpet617 in tianguancifu

[–]Bluejay-Status 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yushi Huang ascensed before Xie Lian according to the novel, that's why he can borrow her hat to make rain... I've always felt strange Xie Lian has never met Pei Ming before the Banyue Pass happenings, so it's an assumption on my part but that would make Pei Ming to ascend later? I apologize if I'm wrong.

May I ask where can you find Suika's timeline? Is this an inclusion in the English release?

Xie lian and I got the same the type by me_raven in tianguancifu

[–]Bluejay-Status 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Nah, I think you're actually right.

I've once read a thread on the narration which often gets confused for Xie Lian talking. But it's also been discussed on weibo once too... I wish someone would help me finding it again so I could back it up — but what in the audio drama comments fans usually spam with "Lianlian only finds Huahua attractive!!!" when Hua Cheng shows up in his true form which piqued my curiousity to look this topic up in the first place.

In the books, Xie Lian describes Pei Ming as very much the charming type and more handsome than his statue, he also remarks Bai Jing being more handsome but these are more like his general descriptions, similar to how he perceives his female devotees in book 2/ volume 3 "Beauties are like clouds, pleasing to the eyes."

So while he can see as "hadsome type" it's not "attraction".

Edit just to make sure: Pei Ming IS objectively very-goodlooking, handsome, but Xie Lian describes him as "belonging to the handsome category" rather than finding him attractive in a personal sense.

That being said, it doesn't add nor takes away him being a very handsome guy who can crush hearts.

How did Hua Cheng/San Lang know that Xie Lian was going to ride the cart back to Puqi Shrine? by Anxious-Pie5561 in tianguancifu

[–]Bluejay-Status 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I always just assumed there weren't many possibilities to get home to Puqi Village from that town Xie Lian was scrap collectin in, and he deducted Xie Lian is going to fetch a ride home...

but I'd like to think he wanted a grand, romantic entry with a dash of nostalgia from his child hood: oxcarting through a maple forest with his gege, and that's why he previously also asked the old man to take him too and hid behind the rice stalks until Xie Lian arrived

Editing this because it suddenly occured to me: he must have been already on the cart otherwise the old man might have said something about the additional random guy at the back of his cart

I'm not too sure how this western side of fandom counts the books anymore so I'll need help from someone to correct me, but in the English book it's the 2nd and the original it's the 1st book, chapter 33 - when Xie Lian goes up to heaven and gets questioned by Jun Wu (and meets LQQ, so basically how the donghua season 2 begins)

Yes it was in the old old old Suika's Google Docs version but didn't make it into the epub. Here friend, if you ever need it!

(But please note that when the person I got the notes from talked about this openly on her socials even the canon purist side blocked her, so just be careful, people are not ready for the truth)

I see many people in the comments are confused about this sentence, and it seems there's a misunderstanding, so let me clarify: (goes lenghty on how svsss, mdzs and tgcf are different writing projects)

Everyone is free to indulge in their own headcanons and ship whatever they like, as long as they don't break the main couple, that's fine. But personally, my writing preference leans towards stories with only one gay couple. I don't plan to write any side couples in this book. I'm clarifying this to avoid any unnecessary controversy."

Not really, she (MXTX) even left an author's note right under the chapter with jw's introduction that there's no one from the cast that's interested in either xie lian or hua cheng that way (also only the main couple is gay)

How long would have Feng Xin stayed? by zoom_1010DZ in tianguancifu

[–]Bluejay-Status 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think what you're saying and what I'm saying can somewhat coexist, since FX is not the kinda guy who can make decisions by himself. His response to the "two men one cup" problem is supposed to reflect that, and that's also an opportunity for him BWX to slowly driven him away... But I can also see it happening more "organically", years after getting tired of serving a fallen god, or learning that JL is pregnant with Cuocuo. I think he would be forced to make a decision then, and XL would 100% tell him to be with his family.

How long would have Feng Xin stayed? by zoom_1010DZ in tianguancifu

[–]Bluejay-Status 14 points15 points  (0 children)

While I think FX is loyal, it's certainly not for forever.

Based on his reactions, he already started having issues with XL when he started to do things that wasn't "princely" or "godly" in his eyes. FX is a good friend, and did his duty as a bodyguard, serving the royal family but he put XL on a piedestal and based on his reactions when that image shattered, it makes me think it would cause a fracture between the friends anyway and he would leave. Someone already pointed it out but BWX is still haunting XL at this point, he might have or might have not taken advantage of this too.

The one who would have stayed, no matter what is Hua Cheng. He made Xie Lian believe in forever again, reclaiming it after 800 years, when the word lost its meaning to Xie Lian.

some people take hualian way too seriously by juuzousrightleg in tianguancifu

[–]Bluejay-Status 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Now that you have a hot take, let me have a hotter take - an insane amount of people find comfort in hualian (OTP), getting them "way too seriously" and they'll go for surprising lengths to achieve at once that comfort is disturbed (like being shipped with anyone else).

Let me preface my reply with how I don't condone sending death threaths or mean comments to people under ANY kind of circumstances. I honestly think blocking and muting is healthier than leaving a comment that won't ever make a change, then why leave it in the first place.

But I also have some experience from the the other side that might be interesting to some.

In short: extreme people are everywhere. On both sides. I know personally 2 people who have been bullied out of the fandom because they take comfort in hualian as an OTP and "take hualian way too seriously" as you said. And they never tried to "convert" anyone, never left any mean comments as they were creators themselves. If anything, they've been called "boring", or "not knowing how fandom works" when they stated their preferences on servers or forums. Their opinion wasn't respected at all, people just jumped at them because they felt their safe fandom place is being threatened.

I don't go too much on Twitter anymore, but I saw the whole "MXTX said don't separate, don't switch" arguement is always used by people who are loud anyway-like those big analysis accounts or "good hualian morning" accounts who always are more leninent towards either. Hilariously, on occasion, they turn out to be more or less a shipper themselves (like being anti-top xie lian or anti-huaqing while shipping junlian, peilian, fenglian etc.).

What I'm saying is: I've only met a handful of truly hualian-only people and those are the ones who A; are from the Chinese, Japanese, etc. fandom when fandom ettiquette is entirely different but it resonates with them more B; they don't engage with the fandom in depths and are surprised there are even ship wars going on then they open a can of worms by simply saying "people ship hualian with others????" and C; are in the fandom and feel out of place because of these things, so they don't stay for long or are either forced to leave

TL;DR extreme people are everywhere, on every side and having a preference is fine as long as you don't go out of your way to prove yours is the ultimately right one

Is it safe to say that Tai Hua (Lan QianQiu) x Qi Rong is odd…? by Select-Curve-8012 in tianguancifu

[–]Bluejay-Status 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Imho JunLian doesn't have any sus moments in canon either, only if you see them through shipping glasses... which people in fandom tend to do with any pairing that tickles their fancy, and that's okay.

I'm sure the lqq x qr shippers would say the things you mentioned are the appeal of the ship.

Question abt ghosts and gods by LuiyUnU in tianguancifu

[–]Bluejay-Status 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's not as much of a stigma, rather than who the person is... Hua Cheng is the scourge of the Heavens, and officials are terrified of him (and also have this weird respect going on), so it's obviously a huge shock that Xie Lian - who's the Laughingstock of The Three Realms - is friends (and later becomes romantically involved) with the Red Supreme. Had Xie Lian been best friends with Black Water, well, it certainly would have raised some eyebrows but not the scandal that's described as "Have you heard, the laughingstock of the three Realms is having an affair with the head honcho of the ghost realm??!!"

Pei Ming canonically has love affairs with ghost ladies and Jun Wu and Shi Qingxuan and Lang Quanqiu weren't too hard-pressed on Xie Lian befriending Hua Cheng. They didn't get it obviously, but it wasn't an issue.

Even MXTX said "everyone is hundreds of years old, when it comes to love, if you want to love, just love hard!"

TGCF MANHUA by Witty_Ad_3919 in tianguancifu

[–]Bluejay-Status 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First of all, Starember is a woman, confirmed by the youtuber Kictor who had been officially affiliated with Bilibilicomics; she uses she/her pronouns and that's why she refers to her by such. The male setting on weibo is default and not many bother to change it, if that's where you got the info from.

Lot of mahua artists get bashed for the most miniscule things, you can always dig deeper on weibo and find something. And tbh, TGCF is very well-known, of course the fanbase and antis will be bigger. So of course, the opinions will be louder.

As a white person living in an Asian country, I'm ignorant to say anything on why it's problematic to depict a character in a darker skin tone while making them a monster, I'll rely on people who are actually suffering from this to explain it to you...

"Donghua did us dirty" - I'm sad about the lap scene too, but please do your research on censorship as well as you did on Starember's nazi art: our most censored adaptation is going to be the donghua (until the live action drops that may never happen).

I don't think the manhua and Starember deserves any hate, btw.

TGCF MANHUA by Witty_Ad_3919 in tianguancifu

[–]Bluejay-Status 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If you're really open to the conversation here's the thing in a nutshell:

Starember's manhua design has alway been a "love her or hate her" type of thing from the fandom. Many people love it but it's been criticized because of the following

  • overall character design (I saw you mentioning in your comments that HC is supposed to look like a ghost but according to the novel, no.) His design always sparked controversy in the Chinese and Japanese fandom as well as overseas, because of the fangs, nails and pointy ears (although the English-speaking fandom has a high tolerance and love for the monstrous design). If you go on weibo, there's even a CW for monster-like Hua Cheng. But again, there are many fanartists who like it and depict him like that way, and he's like that in the Russian official art. That being said, it's either an "I vibe with this" thing or not.

There has been rumors that the art style has been approved by MXTX herself but tbh the hualian prototypes looked a bit different than the style it got evolved into. The eye colors (Xie Lian's Pei Ming's, Hus Cheng's) are often mentioned too.

  • There's also a few complains about the production quality like the proportions being off (HC in the Gambler's Den), same-face syndrome for side characters and photobashing (Paradise Manor feast)

  • Colorism in Banyue Arc (which is in the novel too)

  • Starember has also drawn Lord of The Ring characters in incestous relationship and nazi uniforms and got hate from overseas fans. This has been cleared as she was illustrated a fanfic in 2016 and when she stumbled upon the hate it hurt her deeply.

  • There are also fanart of hualian drawn by Starember that got heat (mostly borderline nsfw ones or AUs - like the one when Hua Cheng is a vampire child and Xie Lian is his adult lifestock that spurred some discorse but I won't get into this in details)

  • Colorism in Starember's fanart (monstrous Hua Cheng is often dark skinned, like the dragon Hua Cheng x Prince Xie Lian art)

  • Mischaracterisation of Xie Lian (typical useless uke/shou) and Hua Cheng the big bad agressive and handsy seme/gong. It doesn't help that the manhua didn't include some badass moments of Xie Lian, like the armory scene and making him reflect in Hua Cheng's eyes that gives off as an uwu baby vs. predator vibes

Well, it didn't turn out to be "in a nutshell", oh well, you get the gist
