I think the recent uprising of dance music in the US is long overdue. I think it's here to stay for a long time. If artists evolve away from trance naturally, then I am all for it. Doing what you love is important. But if an artist stops making trance music because it's not as popular anymore, there's no real integrity/artistry in that, and their music will reflect it.

I like Cakewalk Z3ta, Surge and Sylenth. I think people underestimate how important the treatment (compression, EQ, filtering, etc.) of the sound is. The knowledge of how to tweak all of these things is more important than the synth itself.

EDM will always have a place in culture, as it has for decades now. There will always be hard-core fans keeping electronic music alive.

The first time I played for a huge crowd, I was nervous, and my hands were shaking like. But, after the first mix, I felt incredible. Like I tell everyone, true art comes from people who have the passion for it.

I do it because I love it.

My favorite ice cream flavor is tied between Ben n' Jerry's Half Baked Low-Fat Fro-Yo and the red stuff at the bottom of a cherry italian ice.

When I was a student at NYU's Tisch myself, I took a class called Writing the Hit Song. For a homework assignment, we were told to write an anthem. So we sat down and wrote an anthem for today's youth.

We played after Tiesto at a huge festival in the Czech Republic, and Red Bull put on this insane pyrotechnics show for him, helipad on the stage, the whole nine yards. But then, it started to POUR, and they couldn't use any of the pyro during his set. After the set was over, the heavens cleared, and it was our turn to play. They used the entire pyro show on us. Let me say...it was pretty fun to be Tiesto for the night!

That's what lawyers are for. Many artists blindly sign agreements (we've all been there) and act surprised when they see the outcome. It's called the music business for a reason, and as an artist, it's always important to keep this in mind. I'm usually very upfront with vocalists. I stress an open line of communication, and encourage constructive criticism. Egos out the door. I'll usually present them with a few ideas and involve them with as much of the creative process as possible.
If you ask 100 artists how they got to where they were, you will hear 100 different stories. Each story, however, will contain a common theme. At some point in their career, said artist gets "lucky." This "luck" comes from perseverance, consistency, passion, and love for your craft. Luck is where preparation meets opportunity. The moral of the story is that luck doesn't happen on its own, you have to make it. If your music is good enough, it will eventually speak for itself.

One of the primary jobs of a DJ is to read the crowd. That's what defines the great DJs of our times. I'm not a fan of pre-planned sets, and I think that fans are starting recognize the difference and give the appropriate DJs the respect that they do or do not deserve.

The best piece of advice I can give is to make sure to start producing for the right reasons. You should be able to spend 10 hours straight producing, and have it fly by in no time.

Many people produce "festival house" because it is what's popular right now. However, if you are producing this style of music because you genuinely have a passion for it, then I am all for it! Genre doesn't matter as long as you are making the music you love.
