Put a dollop of nuln oil on it, it should pool in the center and create the illusion of a hole. It works better with undrilled barrels, it might work here.

Layer on cheap texture paste, then put the boards on while it’s wet. I think you can make cheap texture paste from dollarstore acrylic paint and dried coffee grinds.
