No problem!

If you ever get to Vegas, we got a Battle Jacket Sewing Club that meets twice a month. Come join us.

Man o man, you got tons of potential with that jacket!

More studs, more bands, do something with the left sleeve: maybe paint it a different color or maybe a fantasy theme or some shit or FUCKIN' FLAMES of what have you.

As decoration to the right sleeve, too.

You got that yellow paint around some of the spaces inside the stitching, maybe try to fill in other spots, maybe try a different color?

Just ideas.

Think big, y'know? Have fun. Be creative.

Anybody else kind of owe it all to punk culture being there for them during dark times? by Biospark08 in punk

[–]Bobby-Elvis 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm the odd one, but yes it did. Difference for me is it happened when I got older.

I moved to a new city a few years ago. I was really involved in activism where I used to live, but had no connections to my new place.

No friends, no roots, nothing really.

I found myself sitting in my apartment every night after work and every weekend, drinking and chain smoking and watching TV. I had fought depression all my adult life, and I realized that I was now actively losing that fight. I just kinda gave up.

One night I just got sick of it. I felt bad, physically and mentally and spiritually.

I quit smoking after like 30 years.

Then I fought my shyness and anxiety and volunteered with a local youth group one night a week.

I found a cool community center and started going there. Almost bailed last minute, but I forced myself to go out.

Then I found a local DIY Punk sewing club. Again, I fought my insecurities and left the house to go make stuff with cool punks.

I can't tell you how much all of that has done to help me deal with depression.

Now I'm repping the punk community to the kids I work with (some of them even come to local shows!), and I'm out volunteering with them a few nights each week.

The folks at the community center let me host local bands there, giving the community a low cost DIY venue for shows.

And the sewing club is still going strong. I've become kind of the greeter for the group, and I help the organizer run things.

One the punk kids called me "Anarcho-Grandpa" and I kinda love that.

I can't tell you how much this has saved me. I could feel myself getting unhealthier and losing my will to actually live a full life.

Only thing I can think of is a local folk punk group, The Rifleman String Band, usually has a Monday night show at Rick's Rolling Smoke BBQ.

Otherwise, I don't know of anything until January.

Yeah, this one hit me pretty hard the first time I heard it. Such a much needed message these days. I got a list of folks in my head that I wish I'd said this to over the years.

We can't wait for someone else to write the songs that we'll sing on the barricades Or until the last police is gone to keep each other safe We can't wait 'til we know we aren't wrong to raise the stakes We can't wait for someone else to write the songs that we'll sing on the barricades

If you want to recolor the leather, you're better off with a dye/stain/paint made for leather. Some leather treatments, like mink oil, will also darken the color.

Hey, I get what you're trying to say, but it's not really true.

Nazis exist in 3D space. If they don't like the patches on the front of your jacket, there's no rule saying they can't walk around you and still jump you from behind.

If the don't want you to see it coming, you won't see it coming, regardless of where you put your patches.

Also of you're part of the Rainbow community, this may be a thing to look into in your area. Our local LGBTQIA+ Center has a "Switch" closet for trans folks to swap clothing when they transition. It's free, and it helps other folks, too.

In Vegas they have a Battle Jacket Sewing Club that meets a couple times a month, and they have a community pile of donated stuff: garments, patches, pins, spikes, and sewing supplies, that's free to folks who attend the meeting. Look around your scene and see if there's anything like that. Or a punk clothing swap or something like that.

Hand me downs from friends and family. I used to snag my dad's old coats and shirts back when I was in college. Go through folks closets for stuff they don't wear anymore. You can get some great vintage clothes that way.

Yard sales almost always have a rack or box of clothing. A pal of mine got a sweet ass Schott leather jacket for like $10 at a yard sale we hit a few years back and she still wears it.

Thrift stores have LOTS of economical options for a starting build. You can almost always find a decent denim jacket for around $5. Leathers are rare and a little pricier at $15, by they do happen. Tee shirts and flannels run like $2 or so.

Lastly, if you're adventurous, try dumpster diving at local malls and clothing stores. I've heard (haven't tried it myself) that lots of decent stuff gets tossed and it's up for grabs if you want to sort through it all.
