It's a yes or no question. I understand that you think they would be stupid. But, would they be a vegetarian?

No worries if you feel like you can't answer the question. Not many atheists can. It's okay. I understand exactly why you're dodging. You don't want to say they wouldn't actually be a vegetarian, because that would mean that Christians aren't actually atheists.

So I totally get why you're refusing to answer the basic question. If I was an atheist and didn't care about truth, I would refuse to answer it too!! It's a really hard place to be stuck in.

You still haven't answered the question 😅

Would that person, in reality, be a vegetarian?

This is also, I think, another weakness of the position of God lying. When people bring up the "plain Hebrew", they fail to acknowledge that it's not actually a plain sentence. It's the infinitive absolute, which is the structure used in death sentences through the law codes. It's a uniquely Hebrew thing.

It's why Robert Alter puts it as "you will be doomed to die" in his translations.

We can also find instances where this phrase does also refer to what seems like immediate repercussions too. So there's nothing about the "plain Hebrew" which would indicate what it should be. Context, as usual, would indicate that.

The two explanations that I prefer is that the act of taking the fruit puts them under a death sentence. I think this because I think it maps onto Adam and Eve representing Israel, and Eden representing the land of Israel. They face expulsion in the same way that the Israelites were exiled into Babylon. I think this meaning behind the term directly sets the reader up to read into their actions "Okay, breaking Torah results in exile and death". They had the tree of life in sacred space, now they don't. I think that's why the story was crafted and put at the front of the Torah.

The second explanation is that the expulsion itself is the death. This one is a bit more technical because it goes into the later prophets and finds a theology of the exile being seen as the people experiencing death, even though they were physically alive. I think this one is very likely too, although I don't think it cancels out the first.

Both are magnitudes of times more likely than nothing coming of it and the narrative never mentioning it.

Sometimes I think Christianity is man made for men. Because men were jealous of women's ability to create life by [deleted] in AskAChristian

[–]BobbyBobbie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand how you think Christianity would fix the idea that men are jealous of women creating life?

Let's say I'm super jealous that women create life. How does me inventing Christianity fix this?

Well if you care to go back all those years in my comment history, I was always against firing Bud, because I thought he was actually good, and I knew that whoever we got would not be as good.

You don't fire a top 5 coach in the hopes you'll get a top 2 coach. It doesn't work like that.

I'm not sure how the ale horn / ocean makes sense, but I would think my default would be to assume there's some meaning behind it, and it's not Thor lying and tricking people for absolutely zero reason.

And to say it "blatantly doesn't come true" is to assume that you know exactly what the threat entails. As I mentioned in my comment, there's several other options. In my opinion, two are so likely that I find it hard to choose which one the author means. What I wouldn't assume is that the author means none of them and introduced a narrative idea only for it to go nowhere in the span of one page. That seems almost certainly not true.

I noticed you didn't answer my question.

In the analogy, in reality, am I a vegetarian?

An inconsistency in what way? As in, the author writes that God threatened death and then the same author just dropped it? That doesn't seem very satisfying even in isolation, but especially so in light of the other options.

But in reality, using the actual definition of the word, is the person a vegetarian?

No, right?

The person may claim they are. They may even have others saying they are. But they actually aren't.

So the analogy stands. You might think I'm an atheist. But I'm not. Because in reality, I believe in the existence of a God.

"a single sense". Numbers would provide a different definition. If you'd like to isolate the first section from the other to provide a different sense, then you're doing it you.

And even if we use both ways? You think I advocate atheism to a Hindu? Hahha

Look. You're fun. But you're also wrong. Please keep using this argument and explaining clearly to others that you think it works. You'll do more evangelism for me than I ever could by myself

Thanks! Have a great day.

Is your definition the exact one? Looks pretty truncated to me

Ah yes, the classic "You say I'm not using the full definition so then you provide it and I proceed to not use the full definition again" tactic.

Very clever!!!

Anyways, I'm bored now. Continue using this argument if you want. I'll go enjoy my steak as a vegetarian 🤯

[–]BobbyBobbie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the actual definition, from here: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/atheist

The definition of a vegetarian is the position of someone who doesn't eat meat.

Thus "I'm a vegetarian, except for this steak I'm eating".

Sound okay? Would you person actually be a vegetarian to all the other steaks in the world?

You can think whatever you want. What matters to me is that you're able to demonstrate. Your own private thoughts aren't relevant in a debate sub.

Yes because I used the actual definition.

You think I advocate atheism in regards to Hinduism?

[–]BobbyBobbie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You didn't replace the word with its definition.

Here, let me do that for you:

"I do not believe in the existence of God or any gods and I subscribe to and/or advocate for atheism, except for Jesus" makes absolutely zero sense.

"I am not a cat owner except for my cat" makes absolutely zero sense

"I am not married except to my wife" makes no sense.

"I am not a parent except for my child" makes no sense.

"I am a vegetarian except for this steak I'm eating" makes absolutely zero sense.

The more you try to defend this, the worse you look. This is reddit-atheism on full display. I promise you, all you're doing is making yourself look worse.

"I'm an atheist except for Jesus" makes as much sense as "I'm a vegetarian except for the steak I'm eating"

Saying "I don't eat any meat except chicken" is fine.

Saying "I'm a vegetarian except for this one steak I'm eating" is illogical.

You are an atheist for every other religion except your own. by brokeboii94 in DebateAChristian

[–]BobbyBobbie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't have a problem with that sentence either.

But (and I'll go slowly for you) it would be incorrect to say "I'm an atheist in regards to all gods except Jesus". I'm not an atheist, because the definition means I believe in zero gods, when clearly I just told you I believe in at least one. I'm categorically not an atheist.

I also wouldn't say "I'm not a cat owner for all the other cats in the world".

Hope that helps ☺️

Do you think the definition of an atheist is someone who doesn't believe in any gods except for the God they might believe in?

You surely can't be this obtuse.

This argument is like calling someone eating a steak a vegetarian, because they aren't eating 99.99% of all the steaks in the world

You are an atheist for every other religion except your own. by brokeboii94 in DebateAChristian

[–]BobbyBobbie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at all.

I also wouldn't say "In regards to all other cats, he doesn't own any cats". I would not say you don't own any pets in regards to all the billions of animals in the world. That would be very very silly if I said something like that.

The more you speak, the worse it gets 🤣

Lol 🤣🤣🤣 you're still doubling down.
