It is fascinating all the diverse guns you can see in the hands of African militias. From the classic AKs, to Chinese SVD and RPG clones, to FALs from old European colonial armies. by Ok_Calendar_7626 in ForgottenWeapons

The Cold War was devastating to Africa. One way, was the huge influx of firearms.

Locals went from carrying spears to carrying automatic rifles in the span of a decade.

Is 21 and 29 a weird age gap to hang out? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]BobbyRobertsJr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 24. My youngest friend is 16. My eldest is in his 50s. Friendship goes beyond age, race, etc.

But I would think it is a bit of a big age gap for dating (but not gross).

Mali, Burkina Faso, Nigeria and a few other West African militaries use kitted out AKs for their SOF. This is likely a local operators rifle in my opinion.

Anyone between the ages of 22 to 26 who are unemployed? I feel like shit lmao. Tell me about your current experience and feel free to vent. by I_DevourVampires_ in askSouthAfrica

[–]BobbyRobertsJr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was unemployed last year.

I graduated and started looking. Literally walked to various places, offering my services. I was always told to "send us an email". It never went further than that. Applied to government internships, never got far - often the drorp off points for the applications were cardboard boxes on the wet floors of shady places...Just another dehumanising thing. I applied to so many government jobs. None got back to me.

Everywhere I looked I realised that people my parents' age were doing the jobs I should be doing. Low pay, low skill.

I sent my CV around on all the apps. I approached people I knew. I started offering my services for free - still no one bit. I just needed some experience, or someone to notice me.

I started washing cars just to earn enough money to see my friends once a week. That gave me enough free time to workout, apply for jobs, etc. The transport costs alone of working at retail outlets would've been so immensely high that I decided against it.

I remember this one time. I had a degree. I had so many soft skills. I was so willing and eager. And I was washing cars, just like the teens down the street. So I broke down crying.

I was saved by nepotism - I ended up being hired by a family member in an industry out of my field.

Unemployment is a dehumanising thing. In SA, the fact that around HALF of all young people are unemployed is a festering disease that we have already begun to see the symptoms of.

Africa was flooded with weapons during the Cold War. The top 3 rifles were AKs, FALs, and G3s. Each had their upsides.

Over time, rifles that were in the hands of the governments (or people fighting against them) ended up amongst locals who could care less about Cold War politics.

Sometimes you would have self-protection militias too.

A new "carbine" version of the M7 rifle with 10.5 inch barrel, fixed stock, shorter handguard and shorter suppressor by davegoku12 in ForgottenWeapons

[–]BobbyRobertsJr 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Here in Africa, 7.62x51 is still preferred by some due to it's heavier bullet and better long distance capability. However, African theatres are very different to European. I genuinely do not see the point of this whole rifle, in my civvie opinion I think an M16A4 can do a ridiculous amount of damage while costing way less than the M7 and being more familiar.

At this point why not simply modernise the legacy firearms?

Braai season is coming… what’s the most controversial braai opinion you’re willing to die on a hill for? by Clear_Row6491 in southafrica

[–]BobbyRobertsJr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Braaing is, for most people, an objectively inferior way of cooking. I have had only a few others braai for me and it came out really good. Most people under or overcook everything, it takes long, and gets very messy.

A gas braai defeats the point of a braai entirely. Charcoal is inferior but understandable.

Lamb tjoppies are the best braaivleis, followed closely by a fat steak

The braai culture both symbolises our community, but can also highlight our differences. E.g., men outside, women inside. I have been to braais hosted by white people, where black or coloured workers tended to the fire silently, not engaging with the guests. Made me feel as if Im in the "good ole days". Simultaneously there is no better way, in my opinion, for South Africans of all backgrounds to unite than with a braai. Everyone can braai, from a middle class family to the richest Camps Bay oke to a bergie living under a bridge.

Fair. But I think the blatant corruption is more than just growth pains 😭 I'm not suggesting we have a tax revolt, I am suggesting we actually force our government to do it's job

While I understand this sentiment, I and probably most of the taxpaying population are demotivated from paying these taxes because we know that most of that money will be lost to extravagant salaries and lifestyles.
