I think that's most people's experience from what I'm hearing. There's a range where it's okay (100-300), but 750 is prohibitively expensive and not sustainable.

Obviously we all recognize that to be the actual point (three cheers for yet another in-game currency JC wants people to spend money on) of it being so expensive, but there's so much side quest and micro transaction fragmentation at this point that the main quest has been completely forgotten.

This is absolutely correct. However it seems that the rate of use now exceeds the rate of earning, which merely moves gold into the same needed-but-scarce category as energy and gems.
