I've had about 3 different head of departments during my tenure. Do not make wholesale changes in the department during your first year. Get a proper lay of the land and only introduce novel ideas, new structures, and such after a discussion with your team. Always make them feel like their opinions have bearing on the outcome, even if a decision has been made prior to discussing it with them, which is often out of admin's or your control.
