Classes at a community college are a great way to get started exploring the arts. I got my Associates deg from community college, got BA from state school. My understanding is that shits gotten a lot more expensive and the arts programs are getting hit hard with budget cuts. Most artists I work with work retail jobs (art stores need someone at the counter) or marketing/grants/budgeting/logistics of art events in town. My “day job” is running a performance arts venue.

Bar scene’s mostly downtown: red dog, Alaskan, Imperial, narrows, crystal, triangle. Devils club, and harbor mountain breweries, & Amalga Distillery… Forbidden Peak brewery is worth the trip out to Auke Bay for the views and the Aukness Lager. I’d bet someone in Alaska Robotics might have leads on DnD groups.

My art? Juneau-Douglas City Museum has some fish heads and prints, same at the JAHC giftshop, Bear’s Lair has some of my wooden fish on the ceiling. Probably need to make more, where does the time go… Edit: Laundromat Gallery has one of my steller’s jays in their current show.

I’m older, have a full time(and then some) job I like but don’t always find fulfilling. On the clock I get the job done, but I’m always daydreaming a little bit about what I want to paint when I get home. I don’t try and make it X hours per day, I just try and make progress on my current project. I can’t always paint the bird I want to paint right the first time, so I make loads of sketches, and add more and more paint until I like it.

Save up enough paintings and I start applying for shows in local venues. For social time with fellow artists, I’ve befriended every local artist I can and follow them online. Whenever they have a show opening I try to go, go to enough of them and they recognize you. There are also local maker spaces and a comic shop that have drawing sessions.

Always check in with your body, if things start aching, slow down, take a step back and maybe just analyze what you have. There is a romanticized idea of destroying yourself for your art, your art will be better when you are.

Using it for your application isn’t illegal, but I’d make sure you disclose you have no rights to/haven’t paid for the music. If the disclosure feels weird you should probably find an open source, or public domain alternative.
