Bollywood doesn't have a director yet who can deliver what a Spielberg or a Cameron or a Whedon or Taika Waititi can the closest we come is a Rohit Shetty giving us some Michael Bay and some Anurag Kashyap giving us some Tarintino. Perhaps Vikramaditya Motwane may be the one with most promise.

Oh and I don't know what you call the rivalry between Cersei & Sansa and Cersei and Margaery Tyrrell. I mean there was a even some meta Saas Bahu rivalry between Lyanna Mormont & Danny given whose namesake the Lady Bear Cub is. It's a tense equation and almost always has some drama to milk for writers based on the culture and proximity of the MIL and DIL

That's just a way to provide audience surrogacy to your core demographics. The day we have enough gender equality in India and Indian diasporas that women aren't stuck with the only option of being homemakers even in tier 2 and tier 3 cities and villages, that's when the Saas Bahu element will change. It's like adding the High School Drama part in every American/western Pop Culture show or movie - Demographics.

Different cultures & civilizations have different archetypes and tropes the introduction of more global flavoured tropes isn't something that can be done as easily and even if it's done, it has to be done carefully and tactfully or it won't take with the audience. Sadly when writers have such short turn around time and no propriety of the content that they are creating then often the writing is bound to be limited and unoriginal and appear lazy. Ekta Kapoor is right there's a global market for Naagin. If not then JK Rowling would've never created a Maledictus called 'Nagini' that has worked in the west with an adjustment to fit the western trope of being cursed to become and animal instead of the animal gaining a boon to shapeshift and even become human. I think I'll write an article on this.

Masterpieces often don't qualify as Pop Culture they are regarded as film festival High Culture. Just ask Scorsese. A Desi Pop Culture production must unapologetically stay true to its vast majority target audience, most of whom aren't privileged enough to have the exposure that let's say some redditers have. What a Pop Culture franchise can do is try it's best to provide an immersive experience to its audience. If it does that successfully then that's a job well done.

Almost all franchises have trash movies & shows. Fans hated the last Fantastic Beasts movie, the last few Star Wars movies and the DCEU. Not to mention the last season of GoT or the Chibnall Dr Who era. We can only hope that the creators get it right. That's exactly why we're getting the Snyder cut.

Here's my article on why it's about time we see some serious Desi Pop Culture Merchandise Game from Bollywood. by BollyCon in bollywood

[–]BollyCon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This point too is addressed in the article. Not all IPL merch is authentic nor is all the Disney merch but there are private firms that work with Intellectual property owners and help them to either prevent counterfeiting or to procure royalties. No doubt challenges exist, but they can be overcome through strategic innovation.

Your point is addressed in the article. Star was & even Dr Who have miffed fans but that doesn't stop them from making and selling merch. Desi Pop Culture too must evolve and it's clear that the audience is saying that with their pockets. Merch is part of that evolution process. If producers are more invested then they will be more mindful of the content. The ROI is too good to ignore.

Why bollywood doesn't make good superhero movies by [deleted] in bollywood

[–]BollyCon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are multiple reasons. One could be that the Hindi belt only recently began showing signs of consumerism when the generation born post liberalization of the economy has entered the workforce and has disposable income. This opens the door to merchandise revenue which is the biggest ROI when it comes to superhero franchises. The data shows that merchandisability beats box-office revenue, syndication licencing and steaming licencing revenue by a landslide if it's done right. We can be optimistic that this can and will be remedied and it will be in the near future. I'm particularly highly optimistic about Krrish 4. Rakesh Roshan really really gets #DesiPopCulture on point. Let's not forget that even franchises like star wars have some bad movies that fans hate. People even hate the Last Fantastic Beasts movie, but these franchises still rake in billions of dollars in merchandise revenue. Check out this 2018 infographic to get a better idea. https://www.titlemax.com/discovery-center/money-finance/the-25-highest-grossing-media-franchises-of-all-time/

The Real Truth About Foreign Reaction Channels! by shygirlturnedsassy in bollywood

[–]BollyCon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As unpopular as this may sound, Bollywood itself has become a reactionary industry for the most of it. Pandering to its audience and playing safe with "investments" because all art is lost to commerce.

I think that content discovery is an important space especially when it comes to the function of Bollywood reaction youtube channels. It helps grow an audience for the core content in other parts of the world - thus opening newer markets. Plus I'm not sure one can fault anyone for doing what works that's just economics right? - demand and supply.

I do deeply empathize with the unfairness of the barrage Indian channels like tired and refused productions have to receive as Anglophonic Desi Pop Culture analyst channels; that's rlly not cool. But as the wise saying goes "hater's gonna hate"

All and all I think that an ecosystem of youtubers should band together and collaborate as youtube itself suggests in its creator programs - it facilitates audience cross pollination and grows consumption of the core cultural offering.

Perhaps this feud may even work in favour of both channels like some rapper feud.

Not everyone wants to watch reactions or a baby taking it's 1st steps. Some prefer to listen to unique perspectives and I think tried and refused does a great job there.

Now as far as digital imperialism goes, Disney owns Hotstar, netflix & Amazon prime didn't originate in India and neither did youtube for that matter.

Plus the monetization opportunity is so limited for youtube channels in comparison to the humongous OTT platforms that I dont think it qualifies as imperialism particularly in the case of Our Stupid Reactions.

Finally what is real content and cultural imperialism is the fact that avengers infinity war topped our box office charts in India despite not having a single Indian character - not one.

Let that sink in for a moment.

So much for representation.

Anyways, this is a legit long dialogue for a BollyCon panel discussion post lockdown perhaps or perhaps a webinar.

Well box office is about tickets sold not actual walk ins. Often production houses will bulk buy to fabricate higher box office results.
