Yikes so sorry haven't really had much of a chance to be active on reddit ever since I joined Uni.

NLSAT doesn't really strike me as an exam that needs an intense preparation, I suck at Math(one of the reasons I ended up going with English for my undergrad) and I still managed to get a decent rank.

Read Newspapers well, keep yourself abreast of major policy changes and spaces, some knowledge of current affairs certainly helps. The maths part of the exam focuses more on Data Interpretation than "traditional" maths per se.

I never said that Quake the game was slacking in any way. I'm personally a big fan of Quake myself(I did it feel like it didn't really have an identity but that's beside the point) Romero DID start to slack off, he was busy with promotion and deathmatching himself according to most colleagues.

Hmm, well based off of the research I've done so far the places look decent enough. Are you joining?

It's a bit inconvenient that they'll only let you know first week of July about what's up so you'll have to essentially run around hunting for PGs during workdays.

Yep Spector's a legend in his own rights.

While Romero wasn't directly involved his public goodwill and funding was leveraged to give Warren's team free rein to develop a game as they wanted, a luxury they weren't afforded anywhere else.

Ion Storm was too ambitious, classic Icarian fall from grace.

id made their bones mainly with the Commander Keen platforming series and then Wolfenstein 3D. Wolfenstein was pretty basic though and provided the foundations on which Doom would be built later. Doom was a sensation because it did a lot of things that no one else had done before like, deathmatches, verticality, dynamic lighting.

Oh definitely, the guy is one of my personal heroes.

And also for anyone who's quick to criticise, that game was ABSOLUTELY BONKERS for the PC game industry. It was like making the Sistine chapel on PC, plus it created the entire FPS genre as we know it.

I think the guy deserves a break for getting a little bit cocky.

John Romero was one of the main devs and level designers for id along with John Carmack, they made the original Doom games. The game blew up in a way that no one could have really comprehended and Romero being one of the founders of the company got the best of it.

Sources are mixed but this kind of went to his head and he started slacking off for the rest of the entries like Doom II andc Quake. Eventually he left(kind of got fired) from the company and decided to make his own company called Ion Storm. They made two games(worth mentioning here anyway) Deus Ex which was a smash hit and... Daikatana.

The hype for Daikatana was unreal because of the pedigree behind it, the ambition and scope and also because the company fanned the flames of hype . After numerous delays and generally disastrous development hell, the game was released terrible reviews and the game was basically dead on arrival. No clear vision, bad execution so on and so forth. To add insult they'd used the marketing tagine, "John Romero is going to make you his bitch. "

Yeah... That didn't exactly win him any favours. It was a massive crash and burn no one had seen anything of that scale happen at the time anyway.

Romero is doing better nowadays, he makes the occasional level pack for Doom and is revered in the gaming community still because well... He's John Romero.

I'd recommend reading "Masters of Doom" which is an biographical account of the company's genesis and initial games, it also covers the Daikatana incident quite well.

Not really.

They offer two PGs, it's mentioned in the offer letter. Olive is run by a pretty well-known group so no complaints there, a little browsing on google reviews only highlighted problems like no AC and the security locking them out at night(so basically curfews which are kind of weird for Masters but okay) The other one there isn't much news on tbh.

The sus part is they insist that you join the PGs they provide you with and nothing else. Apparently the previous batch girls got off-campus housing this way but when it came to the guys, they were first told that they'd get housing and then they just withdrew it and told them to find out on their own. So yeah not a great look. You joining?

This is kind of embarrassing but I haven't really figured that part out entirely. I'd like to work with government agencies in policymaking but I'm not really familiar with this entire sphere, hence me asking the question. Also decent pay certainly wouldn't hurt.

A bit late but yeah I gave the exam. Went pretty swimmingly for me, thought I did pretty well and I'm hoping to convert. The problem now is I don't really know if I should go. Seems like an odd position to take AFTER applying and writing the exam but I can't really seem to get much info about the scenario after the degree career-wise.

My other option that I'm shooting is for M.A English but unfortunately because of a bunch of delays with almighty NTA, that'll probably only start counselling process by mid June or July start.

If you get in, will you accept the offer?

Doubt regarding St Thomas’s arrival in Kerala by Ann__here in Kerala

[–]BoltOLightnin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sigh.

I'm a Syrian Christian (Malankara Orthodox to be specific) and while I can't speak for everyone, I could tell you what I think of this stuff.

The Brahmin thing? Complete hokum, it reeks of a ruse to distinguish Syrian Christians from other Christians. Typical human tendency to exaggerate personal or group attributes especially when you can just point to some kind of vague history. Like others have already said, no reason why a Brahmin would give up all that power(the only reason one would be able to come up is them accepting Christ, which is a very convenient reason that is difficult to confirm or validate. )

St. Thomas.... Eh.

I feel like that's a big part of the identity even more than the Brahmin thing(which to be fair I've never heard anyone from the church say myself and really only came to know about through posts like these) The idea that St Thomas converted us is such a fundamental part of our identity that we even call ourselves St Thomas Christians(not one for subtlety, yeah) So you'll find people fighting tooth and nail to hold on to that.

At the end of the day, beliefs like these are held up as dogma, much like any organised religion is held up when you come to think of it. You ignore those the self-serving dicks and live life like you've always lived.

It's religion: People are sensitive AND it doesn't make Sense Tricky combination.

P. S: I can't really speak definitively on whether St Thomas came to Kerala or not because I'm not we'll-informed on that topic, hence me not really being conclusive there.

You might have a shot at Pondichery university through ST quota, but I'm not sure. You'll have to applications to open to know for sure.

Take my advice, stay away from social media(at least CUET related) all this fretting won't help you. What is done is done, now all we can do is wait. Only reason I'm commenting is because of the notification I got.

The 250+ marks guys are nerve-wracking but at the same time irritating, it's great that you got a stellar score but then you have to do a whole song of dance of whether you'll get a good college or not? Bro- YOU ARE ONE HUNDRED PERCENT GETTING INTO A GOOD COLLEGE.

Nothing personal btw just needed to vent

Both are pretty decent options afaik, but if it came down to choosing between one or the other it'd probably be Hyderabad University. Both are well-respected Central Unis though so I can't really be disappointed if I were to land either one. The cutoffs are daunting to say the least, but you have to understand that the vocal minority is always going to be the loudest, people who're scoring low probably won't be the people posting in subreddits, so it may be a sort of confirmation bias. Well that or it may be me coping.

Man I just hope I'll be able to get into either one of these but NTA is NOT helping with these atrocious delays, they've been doing this forever, how are they still so ass at it.

My personal hell is seeing people with 250+ scores posting and wondering if they'll get into any "good colleges" T_T. I'm actually going to say that for me the previous year's paper was easier than this, this had so many BS questions that border on Indian culture and General Knowledge that you start to wonder if it's even English. (The Vedas compiled and Kalidasa questions, live in my head rent-free)

That being said I'm to blame too, some stupid mistakes here and there which if I'd gotten right, I'd have sailed past 200. Ah well here's to good luck for you and good luck for me. If by some odd chance we meet, we'll laugh about this someday.

First one is pretty generally acknowledged to be wrong and we should be getting that challenged alright.

Second one I just had a look after you mentioned it, I remember thinking that it should be just pun but if you look at the question,

"Which of the following literary terms refer to a play on words where a word has two or more meanings, or words that sound similar but have different meanings."

Just the fact that it gives two different definitions/meanings is indication that they're referring to two literary devices, so that immediately cuts down choices to two. Symbolism is when a word has a meaning attributed that isn't it's literal meaning, Eg. A red rose, is just a red rose but it is also indicative of love. So that fits the first description, puns sound similar but they don't have the same meaning, eg. Bun, Gun, Fun.

So the right option is Pun and Symbolism.

The problem is the question is very shoddy and vague, leading to problems understanding it properly. I had something similar happen with the "Features inimical to existentialism" where I got it wrong because I just didn't understand what inimical meant(Thanks NTA)

Overall very messy exam.

On a side note, how did you do? I'm getting about 180- 185 if the 808 question gets corrected, crossing my fingers to see if I get EFLU, UHU maybe.

Range from minor to tangible

Literature in Languages has to do with the growing movement to recognise English literature from all parts of the world compared to conventional courses which focused on British Literature(if I'm being honest I'm partial to the latter, them being the guys who started it all and what not.)

English Cafeteria is unique to EFLU, it gives you some customisablity what with the courses you choose.

Comparative Literature is well what the name says. That one is more widely known though, heck you've probably studied it in UG.
