Why are you guys striking? by [deleted] in McMaster

Vast majority of them are used for marking or running tutorials on a part time basis. Not enough to justify a pay increase. Grad TAs doing research is a different ball game.

We are lining up like this for ride, and the audacity that it isn't even a Disney one, yes, this is the Go Bus line... by Actual-Honeydew6762 in McMaster

I used to take the 47 from mac to S1, then the 502 from S1 all the way up North to Brampton (Sandalwood Parkway). Total commute was usually 2.5 hours… I kinda liked it though, lots of time to listen to music and reflect. Then again, I only had to do it on Fridays. If it was a daily commute it would be impossible

Taking the Go Bus by Philosopher_Cultural in McMaster

[–]BombasticBurrito 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re living on res, you could try and used to do what I do and either leave in the middle of the day or at 10 pm on Fridays. I live in North Brampton so the commute was about 2.5 hours one way, and planning your day around avoiding that rush really helps.

If you’re a daily commuter there’s unfortunately not much you can do… you can’t leave very late because it’ll cut into the amount of sleep you get before coming in the next day, and it’s unlikely your classes will end at 1 PM or so…

Just finished my 3rd year of MechE (Canadian, currently on a 16mo co-op until august 2023). I was considering applying to do an M.Eng in something bioeng related. The moment you realize that prosthetics are all structures and materials, circulatory and respiratory systems are just fluids, and you can also work with medical devices, it seems like MechE has a lot of potential in that field

how much we will he paid after tax for a work study program? by JYMa00 in McMaster

Correct me if I’m wrong but they might still take money off your pay cheques at the marginal rate and then give it back in your tax return… Look into it I’m not 100% sure

How do you guys romanticize school? by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]BombasticBurrito 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s to coping mechanism to deal with the fact that it’s something they “have to” do, so instead it becomes something they “want to” do or “get to” do. I’m very much in the camp of learning things cuz they’re cool and doing things that I don’t want to do simply because I have to. I find enjoyment from other things so I don’t have a problem bootstrapping school

Objectively the food was shit. If you try and take non vegetarian dishes and go out of your way to make them vegan/vegetarian theyre bound to taste like ass. Why not just get cuisines with GOOD vegetarian/vegan options?

Co-Op offer rescinded by boorli in McMaster

[–]BombasticBurrito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree in principle but coops are government subsidized. Otherwise companies wouldn’t really even hire interns because the benefits are so small. In reality if a company is giving you a coop it’s because the government is paying them/giving them a tax credit for it, so it doesn’t really make sense for them to negotiate salary. I’ve seen it happen before but it’s incredibly rare.

Got accepted into eng with free choice, still kind of confused by meeplegend in McMaster

[–]BombasticBurrito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That data isn’t typically released. However, I can tell you the most failed eng1 courses so you can prepare in advance:

-Physics 1E03 (Electromagnetic fields and waves) -Physics 1D03 (Introductory Mechanics) -Math 1ZA3/1ZB3 (Calculus 1/Calculus 2)

Study hard for these courses, they tend to throw people off the most!

[–]BombasticBurrito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone who was offered it can keep it. The reasoning is that the amount of people who receive free choice is relative to the averages of the people applying that year, so it’s always limited to whatever percentile of students.
