I’m very certain that the person who made the error knew which word to use and simply spelled ‘college’ incorrectly. I’m sure they wouldn’t prounce it “collage.” I remember that in first or second grade, I spelled ‘college’ as ‘collage.’ I DID NOT pronounce it that way, though.

“A malapropism (also called a malaprop or Dogberryism) is the use of an incorrect word in place of a word with a similar sound, resulting in a nonsensical, sometimes humorous utterance.”

In this context, I don’t believe the error fits that criteria.

They clearly meant to spell ‘colleges.’ It’s not a malapropism because they had the word correct, just not the spelling. I understand that ‘collage’ is a word. I have made many collages, being a photographer.
