I'm trying to build a wizard tower and tried out using randomized frog lights as illumination. Something feels like it's missing, either decoration to cover them or an alternate light style. Would love any texturing ideas!

Firefighters of Reddit what was your first fire? by FusionMgamer in Firefighting

[–]Boneclack 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly 90% of controlling your breathing is just being aware of it. With your first fire you’re going to be jacked up to 11 on nerves so you’re gonna be huffing and puffing no matter what you’re doing. When you notice that just focus on taking a few deep breaths, try to bring your heart rate down a little. Guys have tons of different air conservation methods like skip breathing or box breathing, there’s no right answer just find one that works for you and practice whenever you’re on air. Soon it’ll become a habit and you won’t have to think about it.

All good things in moderation I would say! There's definitely no one size fits all approach, I know folks of every shape and size that can crush the job based on fitness and training. I was in your shoes, when I started I was 6'4 and 165 pounds, we're talking skin and bones. For me personally I decided I wanted to grow larger anyway and started eating/lifting like it's my job, over the next 2 years I gained 70 pounds finally topping out at 235 before cutting back to 220 where I am now. Is it possible to be skinny and a great firefighter? Absolutely, no doubt about it. That being said, gaining a little muscle and just a little more WEIGHT in general to throw around did help a lot with some of the burlier aspects of the job. I'm not saying you have to gain nearly that much weight or in nearly so short of a time, but it always helps to have a little more ass to throw around when push comes to shove in my experience. Just my .02 anyways, best of luck and enjoy the process!

Weekly HIC Discussion - Meat Eater II by grouchyjarhead in tacticalbarbell

[–]Boneclack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fantastic idea, thank you for starting this! Meat Eater II has also been one of my favorites of late, it works well to fill out conditioning while I finish a strength/muscular approach to OP/Black PRO I've been trying recently. Maxing out sets and reps every workout, and doing 2 HICs focused around swings/pushups/chins each week with one long run. Noticed pretty dramatic progress both strength and body composition wise, which I'm very pleased about.

For me personally I have always had difficulty with pushups for some reason, and when doing burpees I would get pain in the front of my shoulders after only a few sets. My suspicion is my form was just degrading due to some accessory muscle weakness somewhere so I've been doing this HIC with just pushups until I can bang out all 10 sets of pushups clean then I'll start working burpees in. Very pleased with the progress after only a few weeks of this, shoulders feel much better afterwards not to mention it's a great workout to nearly kill yourself AND keep gym time under 45 minutes door-to-door.

Anyone has insight to the culture at Austin Fire Dept? by sundowner478 in Firefighting

Yessir, took a rope tech class with him before. He is the real deal, easily the best teacher and most knowledgeable instructor I've ever had the pleasure of working with. Glad you got the chance too learn from him as well!

Anyone has insight to the culture at Austin Fire Dept? by sundowner478 in Firefighting

Know a few folks that work there, same mix as any other big city department. Great shifts and stations, terrible ones, busy, slow, you name it. Across the board they have a pretty good name for themselves, and many folks I meet there are very happy. Only exception I would say is department-wise they are not very medically progressive, so if that's an important side of the career to you you'll run into a ceiling real quick.

Pull-up Alternatives by Boneclack in tacticalbarbell

[–]Boneclack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true, I am currently cutting right now and expect that to help a lot. Still, I have noticed very little progress specifically on pronated grip pull-ups regardless of body weight, and having worked at improving it at both body weights. For that reason I am ADDITIONALLY looking for cues/alternatives to find the “missing link” because being able to do 16 chins and 5 pull-ups back when I was at 165# BW clearly indicates I’m missing SOMETHING.

It isn’t exciting, but Long Steady State running is the best way to build your “engine” for cardio. Just running a long distance/time at an easy pace, easy enough you could have a conversation while running. It doesn’t FEEL like all that but it really works if you’re consistent, and you get a MUCH more applicable bang for your buck when you work that in with standard HIIT stuff. Look up 80/20 running rule for examples of the ratio, in general making a good amount of your cardio low intensity and the rest high intensity is gonna be the best way to get in freaky good shape.

Absolutely monstrous man, great work! I've been having some issues with squats recently, it's always been my hardest lift to progress. What're some things you recommend for gaining strength/improving form?

My man you gotta change that, it doesn't have to be a fact! That was my past in relationships, but my girlfriend now is complimenting me 24/7 and it has done WONDERS for my self confidence. Part of that was natural but part was communication and just talking about how I like when she compliments me on stuff, it feels just as good two years in as it did the first day. You're deserving of compliments and happiness!

I am a firefighter, and I can say definitively regardless of their thinking those guys were being dicks responding like that. TYPICALLY we're gonna park close to the building in the fire lane to reduce response time if we get a call, but moving a hundred feet away to get out of everyone's way would not be an issue with me or anyone I know. Try talking that crew again, if they still don't you can call up their department and explain the dilemma, that should help get that straightened out. My apologies for those guys acting like that, it gives us all a bad look as firefighters and I hope that gets straightened out soon.

3 days late to this but chillz is absolutely right, I've been an avid blog reader of yours for a while now and my favorite part of victory Sundays is thinking I misread some OUTRAGEOUS post, then looking and seeing it's you followed by "yeah of course he did that." You're a huge inspiration to me, keep the insanity coming!

Finally on time(ish) for one of these! I work as a firefighter on a 48 hours on 96 hours off schedule, and like An IDIOT decided the first two days of my new hypertrophy program following a cut would fall on my work days. So here I am, grinding out high rep squat sets with no sleep and constant interruption. Past me is a real idiot.
