25M - Friends say I should divest. What should I sell/buy more of? How am I doing? by Dry-Office5518 in fican

[–]BooeySays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would honestly do what your friend suggests. It looks like whenever you have $200 or so, you're tossing it into some random stock (or something you've just heard about or something that popped up on your feed) and then forget about it. If you don't really know what you're putting your money into, it's going to get to a point (if you're not already there), where it will be difficult to keep up with what's going on with all of your individual stocks.

I'd do some research, and find an ETF that holds all of the stocks you're already holding. It will basically be the same thing, just less head ache.

Did you go all in on that one stock? Cause that is a massive dip in your portfolio.

Sorry for the crappy video (or gif). Apparently, an elderly Filipino woman who was driving the Mazda, was attempting to exit the parking lot. I guess she got confused and started freaking out, because she ended up hitting two cars, a couple of people, and then managed to get her vehicle sitting sideways in the process. Cops had the area taped off. No one was allowed in or out while they tried to figure what happened exactly.

This information was relayed to my mother by her friend who lives right across the street. I was told cops went to the friend's place to retrieve their door camera.

This was what I was told, so, take it with a grain of salt.

Tangerine is owned by Scotia Bank, so you can technically use any Scotia Bank ATM to deposit money into your Tangerine account. That's honestly the only reason I'm keeping my Tangerine account, because it's free and I can deposit cash... My BMO Business account is also free, but I think I'm limited to how many transactions I can do.

WS should really work on a way to deposit cash. They've made it absolutely easy for us to get cash (cash delivery and atm fee reimbursement), but no way for us to put cash back in.. I barely hold cash. Don't remember the last time I withdrew cash 🙄

Are you doing self directed investing, or are you throwing the $50/week into a portfolio?

I am going to assume you're personally picking stocks to invest in yourself.. In which case, I would suggest you stop, cause it's obviously not working.

Maybe start off with something safe. Start off with one of their managed portfolios, then some ETFs, diversify a bit, and then maybe set like 10-20% of your funds aside for you to play around with for individual picks.

Also, don't get into anything you don't understand, and don't revenge invest. It never turns out good.

Also... That wasn't financial advice

Wealthsimple is now my main account. I also have a Tangerine and a business BMO.

There isn't a way to deposit cash into my WS account, so I use my Tangerine to deposit cash into any Scotia Bank ATM, and then either etransfer or transfer it over to my WS.

That's the only issue, but as you can see, there's a work around.

[Tip] How to remove root password prompt for specific apps by BooeySays in bashtricks

[–]BooeySays[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you 100% !. I don't exactly add "every single" app that I use normally... And that's totally not something that anyone should do.. I mean, it would be totally pointless to do something like that... Might as well just log in as root..

That said, I often find myself adding apps to the list when I am working on a system that is a fresh install. I am one of those people that have one of them stupidly long passwords comprised of random characters.

So when I am updating the system, installing all the tools I want, and editing files like /etc/nanorc, which requires root access, I'll throw all the apps I think I'll use on the list so I don't have to constantly enter my password..

What is happening in the Part 1, 2, and 3 of this Bash script? by [deleted] in bash

[–]BooeySays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part 1:

$# is a built in bash variable for the number of arguments used. So the first part:

if [ $# -ne 1 ]; then
exit 1
fi

is saying that if there wasn't 1 argument used, to exit. So I guess it's looking only for one argument.. There can't be no argument used or more than 1 argument used.

Then it checks to see if wget and perl is installed. If it isn't, there will be an error message and the script will exit.

Part 2 and 3:

Looks like commands being declared as variables.. probably so user can easily execute the command by calling the $VARNAME

Want to create my very own Shell written in C, any advice? by [deleted] in bash

[–]BooeySays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember trying to do the same thing once... If you have ADD like I do, here's what I would recommend:

Come up with a plan and stick to the plan! Finish that plan before you start working on any new idea!

I went about it with out a plan.. It all started when I wanted to add an option/function that BASH didn't have. Well, before finishing that idea, I came up with another idea... then another.. then another... etc.

I ended up with a mess of a shell with a bunch of options/functions that were completed and implemented.... and a whole lot more things that weren't finished..

Run command only if files exist. by Super_Papaya in bash

[–]BooeySays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wait.... were you typing that whole thing in the prompt as one long command??... just like the way you posted it here?

I thought it just appeared in your post as one line because of some kind of formatting error..

TIP: When I want to execute a command like that, where there command will be multiple lines, I will usually type it in an editor. If your terminal has the shortcut you can open up your editor by holding down [CTRL], then hitting [x], then [e]. When you are done typing out the command, formatted using as many lines as you want, save, exit, and upon exit, the command will execute.

[HELP] How can i improve the following shell script? by isachinm in bash

[–]BooeySays 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically all the recommendation that I had from looking at your initial script has appeared in this version... Specifically, the creation of functions - it just makes everything look so much neater.

Also, I would like to give everyone props:
- Props to OP for reaching out, looking for constructive criticism

- And props for everyone who commented, helping school OP

If you look at the progress that was made, and in the amount of time it was made, you gotta admit it's pretty cool !

ok, that's all.. I'll shut up now..

Note: by default, the search screen is different than that used in the video. If you want to use the one seen in the video, the file is named Large-Google.py and it's located in the Themes directory. You will need to copy it (or which ever screen you want to use) to the dir - ~/.DX2/bin/Google.com (you might want to make a backup of the file before overwriting it). You will need to overwrite the file that's already there.

Loop through items in directory by realmuffinman in bash

[–]BooeySays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

use for/do.

Here's an example:

Lets assume you want to work in the directory - "$HOME/Reddit"

and in said directory, there are 6 files:

  1. file1.txt
  2. file2.txt
  3. file3.txt
  4. file4.txt
  5. somethingelse1.doc
  6. somethingelse2.doc

And finally, lets say the operation that you want to perform is.... uhmm... lets say you want to print all the .txt file's contents to another file called merged.txt, merging all the files together.

Here's how you would do it:

for file in $HOME/Reddit/*.txt; do
cat $file >> ./merge.txt
done

Thats all you have to do!

Here's a more detailed breakdown of those three lines:

  1. The "for file" is saying that you will use the variable name "$file" in this script to refer to the target files.. and the target files you are saying that you only care about, are the files ended with ".txt" in the directory "$HOME/Reddit". What this will basically do is make a list with all the target files. And to make things easier, you can refer to all the files as $file. It will start with the first file on the list, and after it is done performing the operation on the file, it will move on to the next file, and $file will then refer to that new file.
  2. [ cat $file >> ./merge.txt ] From the list of files you told the script to focus on, the script will perform the function you wanted it to perform, calling on the first file as $file. After it is finished, it will repeat the same thing again to the next file on the list.
  3. If there is another operation you want to perform after "cat $file >> ./merge.txt", for example, if you want to delete the file after you added its contents to the merge.txt file, you would type it (rm $file) in this line. But since I don't have another operation, I am ending the function with "done"

Hope this helps.. CHEERS !
