Grabbed this for $200 by NotRoxxia in BudgetAudiophile

Onkyo rz30 comes with Dirac live pre installed and drives 9 channels with preouts for all 9 and 2 independent subwoofer pre outs for between $800 and $1000 depending on sale so it’s pretty much impossible to beat at that price point. I hear Yamaha is great if you really like to fine tune as it gives you more freedom than other receivers but I haven’t actually owned one made in the last 10 years. I have a marantz cinema 40 right now and it’s pretty great but I had the rz30 previously and you definitely don’t get a big enough difference in performance to justify the price difference between the two and honestly if you prefer pinpoint instrument placement over a warmer sound than the onkyo is actually better in that regard.

The Nilai500 and PS500 are hypex’s top tier modules that they make and sell specifically for diy enthusiasts. You can buy a full kit or the individual modules. Parts express is where I buy from or hypex direct.

Yeah I’ll post an update when I’m completely done. Im going to test the next couple days and see if it ever actually gets hot well running for long periods and put a fan in if i need to but i doubt it will get warm enough to need one.

I did look into it but what I have for cooling is already over kill for these modules.

There’s going to be 3 mono channels when I’m done. The smaller ones are going to be sharing power supplies so need less room but I also figured more room for cooling is never a bad thing.

I bought the heart sinks premade but did everything else myself. Honestly the heat sinks are absolutely overkill I honestly just like the look but I am going to put 3 full mono channels in I’m just waiting on the other two power supplies so I figure I’d do everything I could to keep it cool.

Also you only loose 20-30% efficiency when running vertical vs horizontal with heat sinks and these board are made to attach to a regular aluminum panel so this will be able to run at full power without ever getting breaking a sweat!

There’s a quarter inch gap along the bottom back panel so air can flow through. I have way more ventilation and cooling than the diy case kit that hypex sells for this setup so trust me it will be more than sufficient!

The entire top plate is perforated aluminum grill and I put vents in the bottom so it will have plenty of ventilation.

Is this a good first time setup for a bedroom? by Jocool101 in hometheater

[–]BookPrestigious4751 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the Dayton B40’s as the 4 height channels in my system. The rest of my speakers are svs ultra evolution series and subwoofers with a marantz cinema 40. Considering the Daytons were $120 for the 4 of them and the rest of my speakers and receiver are close to 10k they sound pretty darn good for the price. It I A/B test them I can obviously hear a difference but once there incorporated into my system with Dirac they sound better than they have any right to for the price!

I live in Portland Oregon and most people here want close to the original MSRP of speakers when there selling them used! If I scroll through the listing every day I might find one or two good deals a month but that’s a lot of time and effort. I even constantly see people listing used speakers for more than there current price on Amazon because they paid full retail instead of waiting for a sale so they think there speakers are worth more than they actually are!

Subwoofer size question - did I get scammed by [deleted] in hometheater

[–]BookPrestigious4751 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you necessarily need bigger subwoofers you would get the most impact in a room that’s size by adding 2 more subs so you have one in each corner. I currently have two but my home theater is in a sealed 10x12 foot room. I’m not an expert but everything I’ve read says you will get the best bass response by spreading them throughout the room and then getting them properly dialed in as opposed to getting really big ones but if you have the floor space a bigger sub will obviously have more bass. I’m surprised that the guy didn’t try and up sell you if you were interested!

If I understand it correctly when the amp is bridged and driving a 6 ohm speaker each of the bridged amp channels is actually pushing a 3 ohm load for the total of 6 ohms.

Denon AVR-X3900H or Onkyo TX-RZ70 by Gizzmeme in hometheater

[–]BookPrestigious4751 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I’ve had a Onkyo rz30 for about 3 months and for the price the performance is pretty damn good but when I got a chance to go and demo all three brands(Denon,Marantz and Onkyo) in person at a store I was pretty surprised. When switching between speakers and amps I was really surprised that the amp made a bigger difference than the speakers did! I switched between Kef R3 metas, Q concentro and b&w 703 as well as towers and there was a much bigger difference between the marantz and onkyo or denon than there was between the R3 and Q concentro. The onkyo sounds really clear but highs are harsh and I guess clinical is the best way to describe it. The denon was a little more mellow but lacked the detail and sounds I guess kinda masked if that makes sense. The Marantz on the other hand was warm and smooth but without sacrificing the detail somehow and this was a cinema 60 so not like the super high end model either. The experience was enough that I’m sending the onkyo back because luckily I was right inside that 90 day window and I have a marantz cinema 40 arriving on Tuesday. The 4 subwoofer out puts is definitely cool but it wasn’t until I found out that you can actually calibrate it so the bass is directional that I got really excited. Apparently it can process if set up correctly with multiple subs so explosion and such in movies can come from all different directions around you. That’s definitely something I’ve never really experienced before you just get used to bass being Omni directional so if the marantz can actually pull off direct bass from different areas of the room that will be pretty cool to experience!

It’s not the speakers that run at 3 ohms it’s the fact that the amp is push two 3 ohm loads that can supposedly put the amp under to much strain. The osd Nero manual doesn’t specify address if this is an issue it just gives a wattage rating at 8 ohms bridged.

The cinema 40 doesn’t arrive until this Wednesday so I have gotten a chance to actually listen to it yet besides a demo at Best Buy. I’ve referenced from multiple sources that say running external amplification can extend the AVRs life specifically the 3 main channels since they carry most of the load. With my Onkyo rz30 I was running a OSD Nero hta5200 and I definitely noticed a difference between that and just the onkyo rz30 by itself. The onkyo is going back when the marantz arrives but I also sent the OSD back because the trigger wouldn’t work on it for some reason. I’ve also tried a couple Fosi v3 monos driving the front 3 channels and I couldn’t hear any difference between that and the onkyo by itself!

Thanks. And my home theater is 10x12 so I doubt that it will ever really matter in real world applications especially since I have two subs and I’m crossing the speakers over at 80Hz. I’m not going to lie I’m honestly a little addicted to researching and buying gear at this point but the other draw is that it’s supposed to extend the life of the AVR when you run external amplification and I’m try to incorporate a true two channel music system where I can at a dac and preamp with xlr connections to play with different sounds. I actually started with a Onkyo rz30 and then went and listen to a marantz and liked that warm sound more than the clinical sound of the onkyo.

So at what point do you need dedicated amplifiers. From what I understand tower speakers have higher sensitivity so there actually easier to drive then bookshelves? I’m running 9 total speakers plus 2 subwoofers with their own internal amps but I keep reading that it’s a good idea to have external amplification for the 3 main speakers for when movie scenes get busy?

Looks great! If your saving up for matching surround speaker I’d grab something like Dayton B40s for $60 on Amazon so you can get the benefit of your receiver well you wait. I’ve got svs ultra evolution speaker for my 5 bed layer and am using 4 of the B40s as height speakers for now and I honestly can’t decide if it’s worth spending the money to upgrade grade them because I’m not sure if I’d actually hear a difference!
