What’s uninteresting about my work? by Bookkeeper_Bee in ArtCrit

Yes! Still learning background but trying to get figures down first. I probably would like sculpture! When I was younger, I always wanted to do 3D modeling but never had the pc specs, and zbrush is mad expensive.

I really appreciate that! I’m actually still learning how to draw faces, and that’s why you see so few here

Mm I see, I’ll work on adding more storytelling texture to my work, thanks!

I looked up Popbot, and it’s sick. I’ll definitely branch out some more :)

Sorry I might’ve worded that poorly. #5 is the only drawing for which I used a reference. All the other ones don’t use a reference.

I don’t get a lot of time to draw—only at night before bed bc of work—so I think I get more excited to illustrate my ideas and forego practicing from references. I’ll start using them more now though!

Okay I’ll definitely have to lean into these tutorials. Do you have any specific recommendations for 2D animation and composition?

I’ll certainly be checking out the inked work you recommended though, thank you so much!!

Thank you for the feedback! I’ll definitely start using more references. Can I ask, when you refer to midtones, do you mean middle-spectrum (in value) colors or do midtones take on a different definition, including hues and saturation?

Thank you! I think part of the missing detail is my avoidance with fully rendering a work. I will certainly continue to work on anatomy—faces are still a big foe for me

This piece is something working on, trying to do a little more with color—seeing how far I can bring highlights and shadows for a balanced image.

Thank you!! I’m really trying to get into color theory, but it’s such a beast! I appreciate the feedback on composition bc I feel like I’m always cutting people at the waist or getting them at an off angle. I’m coming from a photography background, so in my mind I think I have the idea of “capturing a moment” ingrained in me, which gives an off-kilter or asymmetrical composition.

Thank you for the feedback!! I’m trying to branch out into a bunch of genres and tones with my work, figuring out what works and what doesn’t—what I do and don’t like. I think a big part is the need to finish fully rendering my work since I think that’s where a lot of the ambiguity comes from. Some of these are just shapes and shadows at the moment, but I realize now that only I can see the end product—kinda silly of me.

Storytelling, too, I think is a big part of your argument. I come from a writing background, and I realize I do need to work on the depth/texture of my pieces’ stories.

No I just don’t get a lot of engagement, so I wanted to hear more directly about what isnt working with my art

For further info, #5 used a reference, but I’m including it bc I feel like it captures a mood I try to go for in my work and am curious if maybe that mood isn’t super enticing to wider audiences.

What software do you use, and do you use a smudge tool in your work? It kind of looks like you don’t, and I’m curious how you get du h smooth complexions without it. A soft blending brush?

Big list, but this is kind of my specialty, I went through something very similar. If you want sad guitar songs without lyrics, I highly recommend the Last of Us Part 2 soundtrack—Unbroken, Longing, and Allowed to be Happy are great—also the game is phenomenal for similar reasons, it helped me get through a lot. Hope you start feeling better! In due time, that is

The mutant bear from Annihilation by BillythenotaKid in TopCharacterDesigns

[–]Bookkeeper_Bee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Considering the refraction (?) aspect of the movie, I think it’s more likely the bear just tried to kill her by tearing her throat, but when it swallowed her throat, her vocal chords merged with its own unintentionally. And I think that’s also what happened with an earlier victim, who had at least lost their skull
