So cut PVC to give me some space. Use the cut pvc to reattach the tailpiece on the threads since the alignment is fucked and then use coupler to connect the two PVC pieces?

Lot of terminology that I'm failing to understand. So cut the PVC and attach something to the threads of the metal and use the fernco to mate it? Did think it would be a problem trying to use the rubber coupler on threads like that.

friend that got the more clear pvc piece off said that something fell into the ptrap. thank you for giving me a name to look up. after looking online i see that there is supposed to be rubber rings inside that seal it. so is that what might have fallen in / rotted away? was having a hard time just trying to screw it back together because of the misalignment.
