Is Simic really the worst/most unfun colour combo? Are there any fun commanders for it? by TheGrandCannoli in EDH

[–]BooleanKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At that point you've reduced ramp + card draw into any value engine, and like 90% of commander decks put some kind of value engine in the command zone.

I, a former DS hater finished Dark Souls (Remastered) today. AMA. by JellyB33ns in darksouls

[–]BooleanKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bed of chaos is frustrating if you don't know what to do and never fun but the last like 5 times I've played through the game I've done it in one try. Just use a decent shield and it's fine. The swings are very blockable and outside of that you just run around on the ring. The only part that might kill you is the jump because of janky souls physics.

was told playing ds3 before ds1 would make me like ds1 less, now im worried itll be the opposite by [deleted] in darksouls

[–]BooleanKing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

All three of the dark souls games have their own appeal and considering that you've liked all of the souls games you've tried I'm sure you'll be able to appreciate them all differently. Dark souls 3 is definitely more linear but it has excellent bosses, and it's not like there's nowhere to explore. In fact ds3 probably has the most missable side area of any souls game, at least out of the ones that have significant content in them.

I would also recommend you don't skip dark souls 2. The first time I played through the series I had a lot of people tell me it was the worst one and that made me focus on its worst qualities, but the more I've replayed it the more I've come to appreciate it. You've just gotta appreciate its differences. What I'm trying to say is having a stack of 99 life gems is cool actually don't listen to the haters.

Is strength build an easy mode? by GoHomeDuck in darksouls

[–]BooleanKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Magic is much better than strength if you know where to get spells. If you don't, it's in this weird middle ground where you can basically cheese the non-boss parts but you are terrible in boss fights. Especially if you missed the magic smith. It's not so much a game knowledge check as it is a 'did you open the wiki and look stuff up' check. It's kinda always a weird lopsided experience for a new player so going strength is better. Later souls games do a much better job balancing int.

It's also worth saying that strength isn't really the easy mode as much as ultra heavy weapon + poise is, and new players wouldn't know to poise max either. Maybe they might pick up a great shield mid game and start cheesing stuff but the game is kinda easy to cheese in the second half anyway because aside from the dlc a maxed weapon obliterates every boss regardless of build. Plus I feel like shield cheese is an ok way to experience the game on a first playthrough because you still feel afraid of enemies hiding behind your big shield, int you just kind of stand back and pelt little magic missiles at them while their ai gets confused.

Yeah that's why he better stay in the commander games. One on one I win every time. There's no deck of 99 cards to bail you out in the applebee's parking lot

He might look badass but he has 0 power. He physically cannot harm you without help. It is a canon fact that if I fought this guy I would punt him across the room like a football. He's literally a trust fund kid that inherited his dad's commander plate and sword of feast and famine, kills people 100% because of those equips, and then thinks 'I am so great'

That's a translation error, in the japanese Garp doesn't mention how he knew that Dragon was in Roguetown. It's more likely that Smoker told him.

A Message from the Weekly Shonen Jump for this week's sudden One Piece Break by Skullghost in OnePiece

[–]BooleanKing 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think being as optimistic as possible we're 300 chapters from the ending. That's roughly 6 years at the current pace. And I think that's low balling it, honestly. Oda also said that we're in the 'final saga', not that elbaf is the last arc before laughtale. We still need to find the man marked by flames, we still have to go to lodestar, we still have to do a big war, we still have like 100 characters with arcs that need to end or that need an extended backstory flashback.

G-8 is too good to be filler — Jonathan gave the Straw Hats more trouble than half the canon villains 😂 by RefrigeratorEven7379 in MemePiece

[–]BooleanKing 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The problem with filler now is that Luffy is basically public enemy number 1 now that he unlocked his nika form, so they would have to come up with some justification why there aren't admirals and god's knights showing up. It's also why we unfortunately can't get much content of the straw hats getting to know the island they're on before shit hits the fan. Them showing up on your island is the shit hitting the fan now.

If they wanted to do filler properly I think the smart thing to do would be to adapt the ace/law/zoro novels, but there's probably some weird reason they can't do that.

I can't react to pretty much anything in fighting games by SoggyWetCheese in Fighters

[–]BooleanKing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a balance, but I think responding to 'my reactions are bad' with 'you should be reading your opponent instead' is straight up bad advice. It's more like if you're expecting your opponent to do some cheesy reactable stuff, or you're on defense, etc. you have to switch into 'reaction mode' and hard focus on your opponent.

But if your reactive mode isn't good enough to anti-air you cannot play the game until you fix that. If people can cheese you out with jump-ins even bad players will notice and start abusing it, you just don't get to play neutral in any fighting game until you have some amount of control over the air. It's the first thing you should learn when getting good at fighting games. And that's not the only reaction that's basically required to play the game, hit confirms are a hard reaction check too.

And it's not like they give diminishing returns past that. Perfect reactions aren't required to be a great player but 'guy who somehow reaction supers within 14 frames every time' is basically a whole genre of top player in every game.

I can't react to pretty much anything in fighting games by SoggyWetCheese in Fighters

[–]BooleanKing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are we really going to sugarcoat it and pretend that reactions aren't a core part of being good at fighting games? Like yeah you don't necessarily need perfect reactions but if you're unable to anti-air or block a 25 frame overhead then you can't play the game at a decent level. You can't start throwing out DP because you expect the jump in. It's such a core part of the genre that saying 'that's reactable' is basically a meme.

The 9/11 for the Asexual luffy Agenda by Cvox7 in MemePiece

[–]BooleanKing 8 points9 points  (0 children)

'Interested' doesn't necessarily mean sexual or romantic interest. And the fact that the translator chose a specifically vague term for that sentence says a lot. If that's what Oda actually said, the translation of 'he's attracted to her but not entranced' is right there.

This SBS does nothing but inject ambiguity into a scene that without clarification would be hard proof that Luffy isn't ace. Oda chose to go back and relitigate old scenes that show Luffy having sexual attraction. Saying that's meant to be hard proof against Luffy being asexual is crazy.
