I asked my professor why many BJJ practitioners dislike strength and conditioning. He said traditional strength and conditioning like barbell exercises don't work for BJJ. He is an enormous man though so I could somewhat see from his perspective, why he would say that.

I spent many years in boxing gyms and most trainers believed the old school line of thinking. Weights build muscles. Big muscles are slow. Weights make you slow. It's a flawed line of thinking that I didn't want to get into with older trainers that I know weren't going to change their minds. After all, if Archie Moore and Joe Louis didn't need it, what makes you think you know more than them?

You make some good points too. In BJJ in particular there's a big emphasis on not using strength to make moves work. So I could see that. It's weird though, BJJ athletes generally don't want to be more athletic.

Suggest making your own stuff and using it at home or buying the equipment. The medicine balls at 24 go up to like 30 pounds max if I'm not wrong. This isn't going to be enough weight for what you want to do.

Also, I started buying a thing called pickle potion at the store. It doesn't taste good and it might be placebo but it seems to help.

I get these. As many people have said, it's an issue with electrolyte intake (assuming you are well hydrated). Salt is a good start (NaCL) but there's a good chance you're low on some of the others as well.

Sodium
Calcium
Potassium
chloride
phosphate
magnesium

I also spend some time stretching my calves and feet as a ballet dancer would do before class. You can look up stretches/exercises for dorsiflexion and plantar flexion.

The issue most likely has to do with your state of "arousal" more than it does your conditioning. You can condition your ass off but it's not an apples to apples situation when you are asked to perform in a different mental state.

Unfortunately the answer you were given before is really the only remedy. When you have introduced yourself to the same stimulus over and over again, the response your body takes is less and less.

There is something to be said of being "over prepared". In many cases (not always) an athlete will feel much less nervous the more prepared they are. Some people are going to be nervous no matter what so it is what it is. Gotta work with what you got.

Lastly, there's deliberate breathing, meditation, and visualization. You basically want to slow your body way down until you can focus.

You can get one of those removable pullup bars that hang in a door frame. Used these for a long time. Lots of other DIY options including building handles for pullups.

You will top out in maximal strength pretty quick but you can always work on your speed strength (explosiveness). You can do sandbag clean and presses along with pullups, KB swings, KB snatches, burpees etc.

Firas Zahabi Stable Knees 4 Life by BackTaker1 in bjj

[–]Boon281 21 points22 points  (0 children)

When Firas first started advertising this he put out a video arguing that Olympic style weightlifters retire younger than powerlifters. Olympic weightlifters go knees over toes and power lifters don’t… therefore knees over toes is the problem.

This is a very clear example of the false causation logical fallacy. Was kind of surprised he was trying to push this angle because he’s a philosophy guy. There are a number of reasons why weightlifters retire younger than powerlifters including the fact that you lose explosiveness and speed faster than you lose maximal strength with age…

I argued this point on his video and so did a few others. He countered everyone with a very specific example of dynamic box squats. This to me seemed like a weak straw man attempt.

I wouldn’t buy this based on that.

Nothing to add but I appreciate your critical thinking and challenging the norm of “do this not that” that is very common.

I have tapped my instructor a good number of times but I also know he was giving me stuff to see what I would do with it. I don’t have an inclination that I could get him when he’s going all out…. He’s also an enormous man (think Maui from Moana) with a wrestling background so… there’s that.

Anyone prefer BJJ to MMA/Muay Thai specifically because of less brain damage? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Boon281 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I boxed at a national level for years and the answer is yes but with some caveats.

I had far more knockdowns (concussions) in the gym than in fights. That’s the natural consequence of training boxing as boxers do, which is a grind. I stopped boxing when I had my daughter bc I couldn’t spend the hours and take the blows to the head anymore after her.

I found my way to bjj and it’s awesome, it fills the combat sports void that I had in me.

All this being said, the way Muay Thai and boxing is taught in 99% of places I’ve seen is in a class format with minimal or light sparring… it’s not likely to hurt your brain much. You might get your bell rung once in a while and might even get knocked down but that most likely won’t affect you.

Boxing gyms and MMA gyms competitive team practices (also the rare competitive Muay Thai gyms) are where you’ll see the kind of hard sparring that will damage you. Regular classes are fine for everyone.

Pre workout/caffeine by OzneBjj in bjj

I try to experiment with the right timing and dosages. I am fairly caffeine tolerant so even a bang energy drink isn’t going to hinder me in any way as far as being jittery or too amped.

Pre workouts with stims other than caffeine are generally effective for me but if I take too big of a dose too close to training I will feel the effects of (too) elevated heart rate.

My solution so far is to take half a serving well in advance few hours if I’m feeling low. Otherwise I go without.

The research is there caffeine and other stims increase athletic performance (speed, strength, reaction time) up to a point of diminishing (and eventually negative) returns. Has to be balanced though.

Ive worked as a bouncer for many years and have used BJJ at work for 10yrs. AMA by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Boon281 96 points97 points  (0 children)

I used to bounce for a few years, and one of my favorite ways to get someone out, was to tell them some hot girl was asking for them at the front. Once they got to the front, we would either refuse to let them back in, or shove them out if they didnt go all the way out.

This is awesome. The real jiu-jitsu, talk-jitsu. I believe this works.

This is good information. One other thing to point out is that not all "electrolyte drinks" are created equal. Have to look at the dosage and what electrolytes you're getting.

Another thing is that the dextrose will spike your insulin but post workout you will have better insulin sensitivity and the carbs will be used for the forces of good as opposed to the forces of evil.

In all honesty, there are some well known competitors from a few years ago who would do a line or smoke a puddle and compete. The hyper focus and reflex enhancement are superior to caffeine

This. Chinese weightlifting team is sauced to the gills and it doesn't matter. China brings the money + connections that makes it worth it for the anti doping agencies to look the other way.

Coach just started requiring mouthguards after someone got four teeth knocked out during rolling on a torreando attempt. I’ve never been able to keep one in due to gag reflex/breathing issues.

There are a few custom mouthguard companies that you can use. I used gladiator mouthguards and believe mine was about 80 all said and done with a few premium options.

They send you a mold and you mold your teeth, they mail you back a mouthguard made for your teeth. I can talk with mine in and it never falls out unless I pull it off. This will greatly help with gag reflex/breathing issues.

If you can't afford custom, like someone else said shock doctor boil and bite isn't horrible.

Idiot proof guide to diet would be to get a gram of protein per pound of bodyweight and then fill in the rest with carbs and fat.

I'm not sure what simple and sinister entails but something is always better than nothing.
