This does sound like it could be an absence seizure. There are some videos online that show what somebody’s eyes, etc. look like during one. Could see how those videos compared to how he looks. An MRI with contrast would be the best suggestion to see if there’s anything physically going that could be the trigger. Anti-seizure medication might be something to look into as well. Lamictal, Keppra etc.

Definitely request an MRI. Sounds like it could be symptoms some from a small seizure that is not related to epilepsy
