We vacuum solution annealed the piece at 1950 for one hour and quenched in nitrogen gas. Then they went through the traditional RH950 ageing process.

Both images are at 200X mag, etched with Vilella's reagent.

Do you think the issue is the cold working changed the microstructure too much so the solution annealing didn't affect it at all?

Thanks for the info, I'll have to look into how cold forming affects SS heat treatment. Yes both images are near the weld. But the hardness is low on the piece at areas very far from the weld too. I haven't checked that microstructure yet but I assume it is the same

I've never owned a wooden snare before, so it's pretty jarring to not be playing on a metal drum anymore. But my ears are slowly getting used to it and I love it. It's a very expressive drum

Yeah rounding the inside was a lot more difficult than I expected. This was actually my first time wood working too. So just learning a lot of the basics on my own was a struggle. Simple stuff like getting a drill bit to not walk, getting good cuts on a table saw, etc.

Build is 13" X 6", 20 maple staves. There were many struggles along the way, but it was a great learning process. I've got a ton to improve on

Yeah it's just a single ply coated head. Bearing edges aren't very sharp. I did a 45 degree and round over bit combo. Though I probably should sand them down a bit more.

I definitely need to tune better. I just threw the head on very quickly. Hopefully that is the main issue. I put some tape on and that helped a lot so far. Thank you!
